Ghinwa Al Mimar1, Natrah Kamaruzaman1,*, Kamil Talib Alkhateeb2

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.6, pp. 1933-1956, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2025.070118 - 31 December 2025

Abstract The pivotal role microchannels play in the thermal management of electronic components has, in recent decades, prompted extensive research into methods for enhancing their heat transfer performance. Among these methods, surface wettability modification was found to be highly effective owing to its significant influence on boiling dynamics and heat transfer mechanisms. In this study, we modified surface wettability using a nanocomposite coating composed of graphene nano plate (GNPs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and then examined how the modification affected the transfer of boiling heat in microchannels. The resultant heat transfer coefficients for hydrophilic and… More >

Flow Boiling Heat Transfer and Pressure Gradient of R410A in Micro-Channel Flat Tubes at 25°C and 30°C

    Bo Yu1,2, Yuye Luo3, Luyao Guo4, Long Huang4,*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.23, No.2, pp. 553-575, 2025, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2025.062851 - 25 April 2025

Abstract This study investigates the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient and pressure gradient of refrigerant R410A in micro-channel flat tubes. Experiments were conducted at saturation temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C, mass fluxes between 198 and 305 kg/m2s, and heat fluxes from 9.77 to 20.18 kW/m2, yielding 99 sets of local heat transfer coefficient data. The results show that increasing heat flux and mass flux enhances the heat transfer coefficient, although the rate of enhancement decreases with increasing vapor quality. Conversely, higher saturation temperatures slightly reduce the heat transfer coefficient. Additionally, the experimental findings reveal discrepancies in More >

Abstract In modern engineering, enhancing boiling heat transfer efficiency is crucial for optimizing energy use and several industrial processes involving different types of materials. This study explores the enhancement of pool boiling heat transfer potentially induced by combining perforated copper particles on a heated surface with a sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant in saturated deionized water. Experiments were conducted at standard atmospheric pressure, with heat flux ranging from 20 to 100 kW/m2. The heating surface, positioned below the layer of freely moving copper beads, allowed the particle layer to shift due to liquid convection and steam More > Graphic Abstract

    Ivan Malakhov1,*, Anton Surtaev1,2, Vladimir Serdyukov1,2, Ali Kosar3, Alexander Pavlenko1

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.6, pp. 1645-1660, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.056664 - 19 December 2024

Abstract To date, using biphilic surfaces is one of the most promising methods for enhancing heat transfer and critical heat flux during boiling simultaneously. However, most of studies on the effect of biphilic surfaces on boiling performance have been carried out under atmospheric pressure conditions. In this context, the issues of heat transfer enhancement and stabilization of the boiling process at subatmospheric pressures are particularly critical due to the interesting characteristics of boiling heat transfer and bubble dynamics at subatmospheric pressures and their practical significance including aerospace applications. This paper investigates the effect of the pitch… More > Graphic Abstract

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.5, pp. 1493-1514, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.055324 - 30 October 2024

Abstract Helically coiled tube-in-tube (HCTT) heat exchangers are widely applied to the process technology because of their compactness and higher heat transfer efficiency. HCTT heat exchangers play an important role in liquified natural gas (LNG) use and cold energy recovery. The heat transfer characteristics, pressure distribution, and degree of vaporization of LNG in HCTT heat exchangers are numerically investigated. By comparing the simulation results of the computational model with existing experimental results, the effectiveness of the computational model is verified. The numerical simulation results show the vapor volume fraction of the HCTT heat exchanger is related… More >

A Novel Numerical Method for Simulating Boiling Heat Transfer of Nanofluids

    Yang Cao*, Xuhui Meng

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.22, No.2, pp. 583-595, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fhmt.2024.049111 - 20 May 2024

Abstract In this paper, a new approach called the Eulerian species method was proposed for simulating the convective and/or boiling heat transfer of nanofluids. The movement of nanoparticles in nanofluids is tracked by the species transport equation, and the boiling process of nanofluids is computed by the Eulerian multiphase method coupled with the RPI boiling model. The validity of the species transport equation for simulating nanoparticles movement was verified by conducting a simulation of nanofluids convective heat transfer. Simulation results of boiling heat transfer of nanofluids were obtained by using the commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent More >

Shuang Caoa,*, Hui Yanga, Luxing Zhaoa, Tao Wanga, Jian Xieb,†

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.17, pp. 1-16, 2021, DOI:10.5098/hmt.17.17

Abstract Flow boiling heat transfer is an effective way to fulfill the energy transfer. The wettability of boiling surface influences the liquid spreading ability and the growth, departure, and release frequency of bubbles, which determines the heat transfer performance. According to the wettability and combination forms, boiling surface are classified into weak wetting surface, strong wetting surface, and heterogeneous wetting surface. Fabricating by physical, chemical method or coating the original surface with a layer of low surface energy, the weak wetting surface has more effective activation point and nucleation center density to improve heat transfer performance… More >
