    Oncology Research, Vol.31, No.5, pp. 715-752, 2023, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.029443

Abstract We analyzed RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) and clinical data from head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Genomic Data Commons (GDC) portal to investigate the prognostic value of anoikis-related genes (ARGs) in HNSCC and develop new targeted drugs. Differentially expressed ARGs were screened using bioinformatics methods; subsequently, a prognostic model including three ARGs (CDKN2A, BIRC5, and PLAU) was constructed. Our results showed that the model-based risk score was a good prognostic indicator, and the potential of the three ARGs in HNSCC prognosis was validated by the TISCH database, the model’s accuracy was validated in two… More >

EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATION OF NATURAL CONVECTION IN A RECTANGLE USING SCHLIEREN IMAGING

Patrick C. Doherty, Heather E. Dillon , Justin Roberts

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.9, pp. 1-6, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.9.1

Abstract The onset of turbulence in natural convection systems is difficult to predict using traditional computational techniques. The flow patterns that occur before and after the onset of turbulence may be better understood with the help of visual techniques like Schlieren imaging. Schlieren imaging allows visualization of the density gradients of a fluid using collimated light and refractive properties. In this experiment, a device was designed to test the behavior of airflow with non-isothermal boundary conditions within a rectangular cavity. Previous computational fluid modeling suggested a period doubling route to chaos in a cavity with a high aspect ratio and free… More >

    WEI LIANG1,2,*, ZONGWEI ZHANG1,2, KEJU YANG1,2,3, HONGTU HU1,2, QIANG LUO1,2, ANKANG YANG1,2, LI CHANG4, YUANYUAN ZENG4

    BIOCELL, Vol.47, No.6, pp. 1253-1263, 2023, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2023.027373

Abstract Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the most common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus and the main cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Diagnostic biomarkers may allow early diagnosis and treatment of DN to reduce the prevalence and delay the development of DN. Kidney biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing DN; however, its invasive character is its primary limitation. The machine learning approach provides a non-invasive and specific criterion for diagnosing DN, although traditional machine learning algorithms need to be improved to enhance diagnostic performance. Methods: We applied high-throughput RNA sequencing to obtain the genes related to DN tubular… More >

    Zongying Fu1, Yongdong Zhou1, Tingguo Yan2, Yun Lu1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 93-102, 2023, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2023.021808

Abstract Drying crack is a common phenomenon occurring during moisture discharge from wood, reducing efficient wood utilization. Drying crack is primarily caused by drying stress, and the reasonable methods for determining drying stress are sparse. In this study, the initiation and propagation of cracks during wood discs drying were simulated using the extended finite element method (XFEM). The distribution of drying stress and displacement was analyzed at different crack conditions based on the simulation results. This study aimed to solve the problem of the limitation of drying stress testing methods and provide a new idea for the study of wood drying… More >

Slime Mold Optimizer for Transformer Parameters Identification with Experimental Validation

    Salah K. Elsayed1,*, Ahmed M. Agwa2,3, Mahmoud A. El-Dabbah2, Ehab E. Elattar1

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.28, No.3, pp. 639-651, 2021, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2021.016464

Abstract The problem of parameters identification for transformer equivalent circuit can be solved by optimizing a nonlinear formula. The objective function attempts to minimize the sum of squared relative errors amongst the accompanying calculated and actual points of currents, powers, and secondary voltage during the load test of the transformer subject to a set of parameters constraints. The authors of this paper propose applying a new and efficient stochastic optimizer called the slime mold optimization algorithm (SMOA) to identify parameters of the transformer equivalent circuit. The experimental measurements of load test of single- and three-phase transformers are entered to MATLAB code… More >

Mechanical Properties of a Wood Flour-PET Composite Through Computational Homogenisation

    P. Pesante1, K. Saavedra2,*, G. Pincheira2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.67, No.3, pp. 4061-4079, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.015268

Abstract This work proposes to study the effective elastic properties (EEP) of a wood-plastic composite (WPC) made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and Chilean Radiate pine’s wood flour, using finite element simulations of a representative volume element (RVE) with periodic boundary conditions. Simulations are validated through a static 3-point bending test, with specimens obtained by extruding and injection. The effect of different weight fractions, space orientations and sizes of particles are here examined. Numerical predictions are empirically confirmed in the sense that composites with more wood flour content and bigger size, have higher elastic modulus. However, these results are very sensitive to… More >

Electromechanical Impedance Method for the Health Monitoring of Bonded Joints: Numerical Modelling and Experimental Validation

    Vincenzo Gulizzi1,2, Piervincenzo Rizzo2,3, Alberto Milazzo4

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 19-54, 2014, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2014.010.019

Abstract The electromechanical impedance (EMI) method is one of the many nondestructive evaluation approaches proposed for the health monitoring of aerospace, civil, and mechanical structures. The method consists of attaching or embedding one or more wafer-type piezoelectric transducers (PZTs) to the system of interest, the host structure, and measuring certain electrical characteristics of the transducers. As these characteristics are also related to the impedance of the host structure, they can be used to infer the mechanical properties of the monitored structure. In the study presented in this paper, we utilize the EMI to monitor the quality of adhesively bonded joints. A… More >
