Numerical Simulation of Bone Plate with Fatigue Crack and Investigation of Attraction Hole for Retarding Crack Growth

Zhonghang Zhao, Aimin Ji*, Changsheng Chen

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.18, No.4, pp. 173-185, 2021, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2021.016238

Abstract Premature fracture of the bone plate caused by fatigue crack is the main failure mode in treating femoral shaft fracture. In order to improve the durability of the plate, this study proposed a crack attraction hole (CAH) to retard the crack propagation based on the fracture mechanics. In this paper, a numerical model of the femoral fracture internal fixation system was constructed, in which the femur was developed using a validated simplified model. First, the fatigue crack initiation location was defined at the stress concentration through static analysis. Next, with the joint simulation method of Franc3D and ABAQUS, the fatigue… More >

Finite element analysis for the treatment of proximal femur fracture

    C. K. Chao, J. Lin, C. C. Hsu, Y. Amaritsakul

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.9, No.4, pp. 219-221, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.009.219

Abstract The gamma nail and dynamic hip screw have been widely used for the treatment of proximal femur fracture. From the clinical point of view, the implants may fail and caused loss of fracture fixation in the impairment of fracture healing. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the performance of those two commercial available fracture fixators and newly design implant (double screw nail).
The whole modeling process was using SolidWork 2006 and then Finite element method was applied to simulate the real situation during the proximal femur treatment. Three types of implants (DHS, TGN, and DSN) were analyzed in… More >
