Optimizing the Diameter of Plugging Balls in Deep Shale Gas Wells

    Yi Song1, Zheyu Hu2,*, Cheng Shen1, Lan Ren2, Xingwu Guo1, Ran Lin2, Kun Wang3, Zhiyong Zhao4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 609-624, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.030521

Abstract Deep shale gas reserves that have been fractured typically have many relatively close perforation holes. Due to the proximity of each fracture during the formation of the fracture network, there is significant stress interference, which results in uneven fracture propagation. It is common practice to use “balls” to temporarily plug fracture openings in order to lessen liquid intake and achieve uniform propagation in each cluster. In this study, a diameter optimization model is introduced for these plugging balls based on a multi-cluster fracture propagation model and a perforation dynamic abrasion model. This approach relies on proper consideration of the multiphase… More > Graphic Abstract

Numerical Analysis of the Influence of Turbulence Intensity on Iced Conductors Gallop Phenomena

    Yuantao Liu1, Yanzhe Li1,*, Shanpeng Zhao1,2, Youpeng Zhang1, Taizhen Zhang3

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.10, pp. 2533-2547, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.027471

Abstract Turbulence is expected to play a relevant role in the so-called conductor gallop phenomena, namely, the highamplitude, low-frequency oscillation of overhead power lines due to the formation of ice structures and the ensuing effect that wind can have on these. In this work, the galloping time history of a wire with distorted (fixed in time) shape due to the formation of ice is analyzed numerically in the frame of a fluid-solid coupling method for different wind speeds and levels of turbulence. The results show that the turbulence intensity has a moderate effect on the increase of the conductor’s aerodynamic lift… More > Graphic Abstract

A New Elastoplastic 3D Sand Production Model for Fractured Gas Fields

Hongtao Liu, Hongtao Jing, Zhixiong Tu*, Shiyong Qin, Junhui Wei, Xiaotong Yu

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.19, No.7, pp. 1851-1862, 2023, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.025015

Abstract Reservoirs characterized by high temperature, high-pressure, medium high cementation strength, low porosity, and low permeability, in general, are not affected by sand production issues. Since 2009, however, it is known that cases exists where sand is present and may represent a significant technical problem (e.g., the the Dina II condensate gas field). In the present study, the main factors affecting sand production in this type of reservoir are considered (mechanical properties, stress fields, production system, completion method and gas flow pattern changes during the production process). On this basis, a new liquid-solid coupled porous elasto-plastic 3D sand production model is… More >

Influence of the Impeller/Guide Vane Clearance Ratio on the Performances of a Nuclear Reactor Coolant Pump

    Xiaorui Cheng1,2,*, Xiang Liu1, Boru Lv1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.18, No.1, pp. 93-107, 2022, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.017566

Abstract An AP1000 nuclear reactor coolant pump is considered to assess the influence of the Impeller/Guide vane clearance on the performances of this type of pumps. Experiments and numerical simulations relying on an unidirectional fluid-solid coupling approach are used to investigate the problem (stress, strain and mode of the rotor). The results reveal the relationship existing between the hydraulic performance of the nuclear reactor coolant pump and the clearance ratio. The effect of clearance ratio on the maximum equivalent stress on the back surface of the impeller blade is greater than that on the working surface (the maximum equivalent stress on… More >

Energy-Conserving Local Time Stepping Based on High-Order Finite Elements for Seismic Wave Propagation Across a Fluid-Solid Interface

    Ronan Madec1, Dimitri Komatitsch1,2, Julien Diaz3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.49, No.2, pp. 163-190, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.049.163

Abstract When studying seismic wave propagation in fluid-solid models based on a numerical technique in the time domain with an explicit time scheme it is often of interest to resort to time substepping because the stability condition in the solid part of the medium can be more stringent than in the fluid. In such a case, one should enforce the conservation of energy along the fluid-solid interface in the time matching algorithm in order to ensure the accuracy and the stability of the time scheme. This is often not done in the available literature and approximate techniques that do not enforce… More >
