Abstract Compact Local Integrated Radial Basis Function (CLIRBF) methods based on Cartesian grids can be effective numerical methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) for fluid flow problems. The combination of the domain decomposition method and function approximation using CLIRBF methods yields an effective coarse-grained parallel processing approach. This approach has enabled not only each sub-domain in the original analysis domain to be discretised by a separate CLIRBF network but also compact local stencils to be independently treated. The present algorithm, namely parallel CLIRBF, achieves higher throughput in solving large scale problems by, firstly, parallel processing of sub-regions which constitute the… More >

An Alternated Grid Updating Parallel Algorithm for Material Point Method Using OpenMP

    Yantao Zhang1, Xiong Zhang1,2, Yan Liu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.69, No.2, pp. 143-166, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.069.143

Abstract Material point method(MPM) is a promising method in solving problems involving large deformations, especially explosion and penetration. In MPM, particles can move around the computing domain dynamically, which can result in load imbalance easily. In parallelizing MPM using OpenMP, data races will occur in the stage of grid node updating if we use loop-level parallelism for these loops. Huang et al. proposed a domain decomposition method to overcome data races [Huang, Zhang, Ma and Wang (2008)]. However, significant modifications of the original serial code are required. In this paper, we proposed a new alternated grid updating method to avoid data… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 13-26, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.084.013

Abstract A parallel dual reciprocity boundary element method solution to thermoelasticity and thermoviscoelasticity problems is proposed. The DR-BEM formulation is given in Fourier Transform Space where the Time Space solutions are obtained through inverse Fourier Transform. The parallellization of the code is achieved through solving each frequency at a distinct computational node. The implemented parallel code is tested on 64-core IBM blade servers and it is seen that a linear speed-up is achieved. More >

A Naturally Parallelizable Computational Method for Inhomogeneous Parabolic Problems

    M.Ganesh1, D. Sheen2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 183-194, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.183

Abstract A parallel numerical algorithm is introduced and analyzed for solving inhomogeneous initial-boundary value parabolic problems. The scheme is based on the method recently introduced in Sheen, Sloan, and Thomée (2000) for homogeneous problems. We give a method based on a suitable choice of multiple parameters. Our scheme allows one to compute solutions in a wide range of time. Instead of using a standard time-marching method, which is not easily parallelizable, we take the Laplace transform in time of the parabolic problems. The resulting elliptic problems can be solved in parallel. Solutions are then computed by a discrete inverse Laplace transformation.… More >
