Abstract The increasing global population at a rapid pace makes road traffic dense; managing such massive traffic is challenging. In developing countries like Pakistan, road traffic accidents (RTA) have the highest mortality percentage among other Asian countries. The main reasons for RTAs are road cracks and potholes. Understanding the need for an automated system for the detection of cracks and potholes, this study proposes a decision support system (DSS) for an autonomous road information system for smart city development with the use of deep learning. The proposed DSS works in layers where initially the image of roads is captured and coordinates… More >

Convergence of Stereo Vision-Based Multimodal YOLOs for Faster Detection of Potholes

    Sungan Yoon, Jeongho Cho*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.73, No.2, pp. 2821-2834, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.027840

Abstract Road potholes can cause serious social issues, such as unexpected damages to vehicles and traffic accidents. For efficient road management, technologies that quickly find potholes are required, and thus researches on such technologies have been conducted actively. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction method has relatively high accuracy and can be used in practice but it has limited application owing to its long data processing time and high sensor maintenance cost. The two-dimensional (2D) vision method has the advantage of inexpensive and easy application of sensor. Recently, although the 2D vision method using the convolutional neural network (CNN) has shown improved pothole… More >

PotholeEye+: Deep-Learning Based Pavement Distress Detection System toward Smart Maintenance

    Juyoung Park1,*, Jung Hee Lee1, Junseong Bang2,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.127, No.3, pp. 965-976, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.014669

    Abstract

We propose a mobile system, called PotholeEye+, for automatically monitoring the surface of a roadway and detecting the pavement distress in real-time through analysis of a video. PotholeEye+ pre-processes the images, extracts features, and classifies the distress into a variety of types, while the road manager is driving. Every day for a year, we have tested PotholeEye+ on real highway involving real settings, a camera, a mini computer, a GPS receiver, and so on. Consequently, PotholeEye+ detected the pavement distress with accuracy of 92%, precision of 87% and recall 74% averagely during driving at an average speed of 110 km/h… More >
