Bamboo Parenchymal Cells: An Untapped Bio-Based Resource for Sustainable Material

    Yao Xia1, Yuxiang Huang1,*, Shifeng Zhang2, Yanglun Yu1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.13, No.10, pp. 1881-1898, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2025.02025-0068 - 22 October 2025

Abstract Bamboo parenchymal cells (PCs) represent an underutilized resource with significant potential as a sustainable and versatile bio-based material. Despite the extensive research on bamboo fibers, PCs, comprising a considerable portion of bamboo, have been largely overlooked. This review examines the multi-scale structure of bamboo PCs, including their microcapsules, multi-wall layers, and pits, which provide the structural foundation for diverse applications. Various physical and chemical isolation methods, impacting the properties of extracted PCs, are also discussed. Notably, the review explores the promising applications of bamboo PCs, highlighting their use as filler materials in formaldehyde-free composites, as More > Graphic Abstract

Improvement of the Birch Outer Bark Plywood Binder: The Impact of the Bark Fractional Composition and the Binder Preparation Methodology

Rūdolfs Bērziņš*, Aigars Pāže, Guntis Sosins, Daniela Godiņa, Laima Vēvere, Jānis Rižikovs

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.12, pp. 2095-2113, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.056769 - 20 December 2024

Abstract Birch outer bark (BOB) from Betula pendula Roth. is a unique and valuable biomass feedstock that contains suberin. The biopolyester suberin is built from bifunctional fatty acids-suberinic acids (SA)-which can be obtained through a depolymerization process in an alkaline medium and used as a binder due to their adhesive properties. The aim of this study was to develop the SA-containing binder and identify suitable pressing conditions to produce plywood that meets the shear strength requirements of the EN 314-2 standard 3rd moisture resistance class for bonding quality, ensuring durability in unprotected exterior conditions (shear strength ≥… More > Graphic Abstract

RESEARCH PROGRESS AND PROSPECT OF HEAT PIPE CAPILLARY WICKS

Ningxiang Lu, Jinwang Li*, Yongkang Sun

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.18, pp. 1-15, 2022, DOI:10.5098/hmt.18.24

Abstract Heat pipe is a kind of high-efficiency heat transfer element which depends on the phase change of its internal working liquid. It has the characteristics of high heat conductivity and excellent average temperature performance. As the core component of heat pipe, capillary wicks play the role of transmitting working fluid and have a crucial impact on the heat transfer performance of heat pipe. In this paper, the research progress of capillary wicks in recent years is introduced from the aspects of structure, fabrication method, performance research, numerical analysis and so on. The current research results More >

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.5, pp. 3250-3254, 2006

Abstract Objectives: We performed the first prospective, randomized, multi-center comparison of overall quality and patient tolerability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and sodium phosphate (NaP) solution for mechanical bowel preparation prior to urinary diversion surgery.
Methods: Between 2001 and 2003, 36 patients at six institutions underwent major urological reconstructive surgery incorporating small intestine (35 radical cystectomy with urinary diversion and 1 bladder augmentation). Patients were prospectively randomized to receive either oral polyethylene glycol (group 1, n=16) or sodium phosphate (group 2, n=20) for mechanical bowel preparation prior to surgery, according to our multi-institutional IRB-approved protocol. All patients completed… More >
