    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.65, No.1, pp. 109-123, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.011468

Abstract The present work emphasizes the significance of oscillatory mixed convection stratified fluid and heat transfer characteristics at different stations of non-conducting horizontally circular cylinder in the presence of thermally stratified medium. To remove the difficulties in illustrating the coupled PDE’s, the finite-difference scheme with efficient primitive-variable formulation is proposed to transform dimensionless equations. The numerical simulations of coupled non-dimensional equations are computed in terms velocity of fluid, temperature and magnetic field which are computed to examine the fluctuating components of skin friction, heat transfer and current density for various emerging parameters. The governing parameters namely, thermally stratification parameter More >

Preoperative Risk Assessment and Perioperative Management of Adults with Congenital Heart Disease Undergoing Non-Cardiac Surgery

Michela Palma, Giancarlo Scognamiglio*, Flavia Fusco, Assunta Merola, Anna Correra, Diego Colonna, Emanuele Romeo, Berardo Sarubbi

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.15, No.1, pp. 33-49, 2020, DOI:10.32604/CHD.2020.011523

Abstract Adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) constitute a growing population with complex cardiac physiopathology and frequent extra-cardiac involvement. The recent dramatic improvement of their life expectancy has resulted in an increasing proportion of ACHD patients requiring non-cardiac surgery. While a large body of evidence demonstrated the importance of an accurate risk assessment in patients with acquired heart disease before noncardiac surgery in order to reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality and detailed algorithms have been released by international societies, no specific guidelines are available for the perioperative management in this population. Nonetheless, understanding the complex anatomy and unusual physiology of both… More >

Alexander C. Egbe, William R. Miranda, Patricia A. Pellikka, Sorin V. Pislaru, Barry A. Borlaug, Srikanth Kothapalli, Sindhura Ananthaneni, Harigopal Sandhyavenu, Maria Najam, Mohamed Farouk Abdelsamid, Heidi M. Connolly

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.14, No.4, pp. 657-664, 2019, DOI:10.1111/chd.12768

Abstract Background: We hypothesized that echocardiographic indices of right ventricular to pulmonary artery (RV‐PA) coupling were comparable to cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI)‐derived RV volumetric indices in predicting disease severity in chronic pulmonary regurgitation (PR).
Methods: Patients with ≥ moderate PR (2003‐2015) with and without prior CMRI scans were enrolled into the study cohort and validation cohort, respectively. Endpoint was to determine the association between noninvasive RV‐PA coupling in‐ dices (tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion/right ventricular systolic pressure [TAPSE/RVSP] and fractional area change [FAC]/RVSP ratio) and markers of disease severity, and compared this association to that of CMRI‐derived RV volumetric indi‐… More >

Peri-procedural risk stratification and management of patients with Williams syndrome

    R. Thomas Collins II1,2, Margaret G. Collins3, Michael L. Schmitz2,4, Justin T. Hamrick4

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.12, No.2, pp. 133-142, 2017, DOI:10.1111/chd.12447

Abstract Williams syndrome (WS) is a congenital, multisystem disorder affecting the cardiovascular, connective tissue, and central nervous systems in 1 in 10 000 live births. Cardiovascular involvement is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with WS, and noninvasive and invasive procedures are common. Sudden cardiovascular collapse in patients with WS is a well-known phenomenon, especially in the peri-procedural period. Detailed guidelines for peri-procedural management of patients with WS are limited. The goal of this review is to provide thoughtful, safe and effective management strategies for the peri-procedural care of patients with WS with careful consideration of hemodynamic… More >

Block Stratification of Sedimenting Granular Matter in a Vessel due to Vertical Vibrations

    V.G. Kozlov1,2, A.A. Ivanova3, P. Evesque1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.2, No.3, pp. 203-210, 2006, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2006.002.203

Abstract Sedimentation of granular matter in a vertical channel filled with a viscous liquid and subject to longitudinal translational vibration is studied, starting froma compact suspension. A new vibrational effect is foundexperimentally and described theoretically; it is the formation of blocks (with a relatively high density) of sedimenting granular matter with stable lower and upper horizontal demarcations and a sharp density discontinuity. Owing to this phenomenon the sedimentation velocity of such granular matter is reduced. A new theoreticalmodel based on viscous vibrational particle interactionin the limit of concentrated suspensions is elaborated, assuming particle-particle attraction in direction parallel tovibration and particle-particle repulsion… More >

On the Behavior of an Interface under Molecular Diffusion: A Theoretical Prediction and Experimental Study

    R. Abdeljabar1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.5, No.2, pp. 193-210, 2009, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2009.005.193

Abstract A theoretical model has been developed to predict the expansion of a salty gradient (i.e. the interface) layer under natural diffusion. The salty gradient layer is initially sandwiched between two homogeneous miscible layers of varying salinity, which may or may not have the same thickness. The model describes the concentration profile of the salty gradient layer (expressed by analytical solutions of the diffusion equation) as the boundaries of this interfacial layer move into the adjacent (hitherto homogeneous) regions. The lifetime of the adjacent layers is also predicted. An experimental study for a configuration with salty water below and distilled water… More >

Effect of Double Stratification on Free Convection in a Power-Law Fluid Saturated Porous Medium

    D. Srinivasacharya1, G. Swamy Reddy1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.3, pp. 291-305, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.291

Abstract Free convection and related heat and mass transfer along a vertical plate embedded in a power-law fluid saturated Darcy porous medium with thermal and solutal stratification effects is studied. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations and then solved numerically by means of a shooting method. The variations of non-dimensional velocity, temperature and concentration are presented graphically for various values of the power-law index, and of the thermal and solutal stratification parameters. In addition, the heat and mass transfer rates are tabulated for different values of the governing nondimensional numbers. More >
