    J. Noorzaei1, K.H. Bayagoob2, A.A. Abdulrazeg1, M.S. Jaafar1,1, T.A. Mohammed1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.47, No.1, pp. 43-60, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.047.043

Abstract This paper focuses on the development, verification and application of a three-dimensional finite element code for coupled thermal and structural analysis of roller compacted concrete dams. The Kinta RCC gravity dam, which is the first roller compacted concrete dam in Malaysia, has been taken for the purpose of verification of the finite element code. The actual climatic conditions and thermal properties of the materials were considered in the analysis. The structural stress analysis was performed using the elasto-plastic stress analysis. The Mohr yield criterion which is widely used for concrete plasticity modeling was adopted in this study. The results have… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 1-30, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.022.001

Abstract A detailed finite element analysis of the right rear lug of the American Airlines Flight 587 - Airbus A300-600R was performed as part of the National Transportation Safety Board's failure investigation of the accident that occurred on November 12, 2001. The loads experienced by the right rear lug were evaluated using global models of the vertical tail, local models near the right rear lug, and a global-local analysis procedure. The right rear lug was analyzed using two modeling approaches. In the first approach, solid-shell type modeling was used, and in the second approach, layered-shell type modeling was used. The solid-shell… More >

Element Free Galerkin Method for Three-dimensional Structural Analysis

    Wen-Hwa Chen1, Xhu-Ming Guo2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.4, pp. 497-508, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.497

Abstract An Element Free Galerkin Method is developed for the analysis of three-dimensional structures. A highly accurate and reliable relation between the number of the quadrature orders nQ and nodes in a three-dimensional cell nc, nQ3nc + 3, is established to accomplish the required integral calculation in the cell. Based on the theory of topology, the generation of nodes in the solution procedure consists of three sequential steps, say, defining the geometric boundary, arranging inside of the body, and improving numerical accuracy. In addition, by selecting the Dirac Delta function as the weighting function, a three-dimensional scattering sub-domain is… More >

A Three-Dimensional Meshless Scheme with Background Grid for Electrostatic-Structural Analysis

    Ming-Hsiao Lee, Wen-Hwa Chen

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 59-78, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.011.059

Abstract On the analysis of electrostatic-structural coupled problems as encountered in many electrostatic driven MEMS devices, the electrostatic analysis domain is often extremely distorted due to the deflection of the structure. This kind of problem is difficult to be dealt with by almost all kinds of available numerical methods. A new three-dimensional meshless scheme with background grid is thus proposed herein. By this scheme, a three-dimensional fixed background grid with regularly-distributed nodes is utilized. Another set of discretized boundary grid is employed to describe the boundary surfaces of both the structure and the electrostatic field. The analysis electrostatic/structural domains are modeled… More >
