Abstract In this study, cell-centered (CC) and cell-vertex (CV) finite volume (FV) approaches are applied and assessed for the simulation of two-dimensional structural dynamics on arbitrary quadrilateral grids. For the calculation of boundary nodes’ displacement in the CC FV approach, three methods are employed. The first method is a simple linear regression of displacement of boundary nodes from the displacement of interior cell centers. In the second method, an extrapolation technique is applied for this purpose and, in the third method; the line boundary cell technique is incorporated into the solution algorithm in an explicit manner. To study the effects of… More >

Constitutive Contact Laws in Structural Dynamics

    K.Willner 1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.48, No.3, pp. 303-336, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.048.303

Abstract The dynamic behavior of structures with joints is strongly influenced by the constitutive behavior within the contact areas. In this paper the influence of an elaborate constitutive contact model based on a rough surface model is investigated. The contact model is able to describe several effects like pressure dependent contact stiffness in normal and tangential direction as well as microslip effects. The corresponding constitutive contact laws are implemented in a finite element code. Numerical simulations are compared to experimental results of a clamped double-beam experiment. More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.31, No.3, pp. 145-156, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.031.145

Abstract A novel meshless method for structural dynamic analysis is presented and discussed in this paper. It is called meshless local natural neighbour interpolation (MLNNI) method, which uses a meshless spatial approximation based only on nodes. The MLNNI is derived from the generalized meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method as a special case. Local weak forms are developed using weighted residual method locally from the dynamic partial differential equation. In the construction of trial functions, the natural neighbour interpolation (NNI) is employed to simplify the treatment of the essential boundary conditions. The domain integration is evaluated over included Delaunay triangles in each… More >

Time Variant Reliability Analysis of Nonlinear Structural Dynamical Systems using combined Monte Carlo Simulations and Asymptotic Extreme Value Theory

    B Radhika1, S S P,a1, C S Manohar1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.27, No.1&2, pp. 79-110, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.027.079

Abstract Reliability of nonlinear vibrating systems under stochastic excitations is investigated using a two-stage Monte Carlo simulation strategy. For systems with white noise excitation, the governing equations of motion are interpreted as a set of Ito stochastic differential equations. It is assumed that the probability distribution of the maximum in the steady state response belongs to the basin of attraction of one of the classical asymptotic extreme value distributions. The first stage of the solution strategy consists of selection of the form of the extreme value distribution based on hypothesis tests, and the next stage involves the estimation of parameters of… More >

An Advanced Time-Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Method for Structural Dynamics

    Chyou-Chi Chien, Tong-Yue Wu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 213-226, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.213

Abstract This study presents a novel computational method for implementing the time finite element formulation for the equations of linear structural dynamics. The proposed method adopts the time-discontinuous Galerkin method, in which both the displacement and velocity variables are represented independently by second-order interpolation functions in the time domain. The solution algorithm derived utilizes a predictor/multi-corrector technique that can effectively obtain the solutions for the resulting system of coupled equations. The numerical implementation of the time-discontinuous Galerkin finite element method is verified through several benchmark problems. Numerical results are compared with exact and accepted solutions from previous literature. Since a fifth-order… More >

Investigation of the Short-Time Photodissociation Dynamics of Furfural in S2 State by Resonance Raman and Quantum Chemistry Calculations

    Kemei Pei1,*, Yueben Dong1, Lei Chen1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.55, No.1, pp. 189-200, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2018.055.189

    Abstract Raman (resonance Raman, FT-Raman), IR and UV-visible spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations were used to investigate the photodissociation dynamics of furfural in S2 state. The resonance Raman(RR) spectra indicate that the photorelaxation dynamics for the S0→S2 excited state is predominantly along nine motions: C=O stretch ν5 (1667 cm-1), ring C=C antisymmetric stretch ν6 (1570 cm-1), ring C=C symmetric stretch ν7 (1472 cm-1), C2-O6-C5 symmetric stretch/C1-H8 rock in plane ν8 (1389 cm-1), C3-C4 stretch/ C1-H8 rock in plane ν9 (1370 cm-1), C5-O6 stretch in plane ν12 (1154 cm-1), ring breath ν13 (1077 cm-1), C3-C4 stretch ν14 (1020 cm-1), C3-C2-O6 symmetric stretch… More >
