A Three-dimensional Adaptive Strategy with Uniform Background Grid in Element-free Galerkin Method for Extremely Large Deformation Problems

    Cheng-Te Chi1, Ming-Hsiao Lee2, Wen-Hwa Chen1,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.24, No.3, pp. 239-256, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.024.239

Abstract A novel three-dimensional adaptive element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) based on a uniform background grid is proposed to cope with the problems with extremely large deformation. On the basis of this uniform background grid, an interior adaptive strategy through an error estimation within the analysis domain is developed. By this interior adaptive scheme, additional adaptive nodes are inserted in those regions where the solution accuracy needs to be improved. As opposed to the fixed uniform background grid, these inserted nodes can move along with deformation to describe the particular local deformation of the structure. In addition, a triangular surface technique is… More >

A New Quasi-Boundary Scheme for Three-Dimensional Backward Heat Conduction Problems

    Chih-Wen Chang1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.24, No.3, pp. 209-238, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.024.209

Abstract In this study, we employ a semi-analytical scheme to resolve the three-dimensional backward heat conduction problem (BHCP) by utilizing a quasi-bound -ary concept. First, the Fourier series expansion method is used to estimate the temperature field u(x, y, z, t) at any time t < T. Second, we ponder a direct regularization by adding an extra term a(x, y, z, 0) to transform a second-kind Fredholm integral equation for u(x, y, z, 0). The termwise separable property of the kernel function allows us to acquire a closed-form regularized solution. In addition, a tactic to determine the regularization parameter is recommended.… More >

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Welding Deformation in Thin Plates

    M.R. Khoshravan1 and M.A. Setoodeh1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.16, No.3, pp. 195-228, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.016.195

Abstract The use of welding to permanently join plates is common in industry due to its high efficiency. But welding creates thermal stresses, which can lead to residual stresses and physical distortion. This phenomenon directly influences the buckling stiffness of the welded structure. The welding distortion not only makes difficult the erection of the project, but also influences the final quality and cost of production. In this research, the thermo-elastic-plastic conditions were simulated by a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FE). Mechanical and thermal properties of the material were applied to the model, leading to eigenvalue analysis of the thermal and… More >

Three-Dimensional Solutions of Functionally Graded Piezo-Thermo-Elastic Shells and Plates Using a Modified Pagano Method

    Chih-Ping Wu1,2, Shao-En Huang2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.12, No.3, pp. 251-282, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.012.251

Abstract A modified Pagano method is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) coupled analysis of simply-supported, doubly curved functionally graded (FG) piezo-thermo-elastic shells under thermal loads. Four different loading conditions, applied on the lateral surfaces of the shells, are considered. The material properties of FG shells are regarded as heterogeneous through the thickness coordinate, and then specified to obey an exponent-law dependent on this. The Pagano method, conventionally used for the analysis of multilayered composite elastic plates/shells, is modified to be feasible for the present analysis of FG piezo-thermo-elastic plates/shells. The modifications include that a displacement-based formulation is replaced by a mixed… More >

Bond-Slip Effects on the Behaviour of RC Beam under Monotonic Loading - An Integrated 3D Computational Model using EAS Approach

    Amiya K. Samanta1, Somnath Ghosh2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 1-38, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.012.001

Abstract This paper presents a formulation of hypo-elasticity based RC beam model with bond-slip. Details of the constitutive model and analysis method used are provided. A procedure has been described to carry out three-dimensional analysis considering both geometrical as well as material nonlinearity for a simply supported RC beam employing finite element technique, which uses 8-noded isoparametric hexahedral element HCiS18. Enhanced assumed strain (EAS) formulation has been utilized to predict load-deformation and internal stresses both in the elastic as well as nonlinear regime. It models the composite behaviour of concrete and reinforcements in rigid /perfect bond situation and their mutual interaction… More >

A Three-Dimensional Meshless Scheme with Background Grid for Electrostatic-Structural Analysis

    Ming-Hsiao Lee, Wen-Hwa Chen

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 59-78, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.011.059

Abstract On the analysis of electrostatic-structural coupled problems as encountered in many electrostatic driven MEMS devices, the electrostatic analysis domain is often extremely distorted due to the deflection of the structure. This kind of problem is difficult to be dealt with by almost all kinds of available numerical methods. A new three-dimensional meshless scheme with background grid is thus proposed herein. By this scheme, a three-dimensional fixed background grid with regularly-distributed nodes is utilized. Another set of discretized boundary grid is employed to describe the boundary surfaces of both the structure and the electrostatic field. The analysis electrostatic/structural domains are modeled… More >

    Three-dimensional Ehrlich-Schwoebel Barriers of W

    Z. Xu1, L. G. Zhou1, Jian Wang1, Timothy S. Cale2, Hanchen Huang1,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.3, No.1, pp. 43-48, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.003.043

Abstract Recent studies show that three-dimensional Ehrlich-Schwoebel (3D ES), or facet-facet, barriers of face-centered-cubic metals are substantially higher than other surface diffusion barriers. This paper presents the numerical results of 3D ES barriers for body-centered-cubic W, using classical molecular statics calculations and the nudged elastic band method. Results show that an adatom on W{110} has a diffusion barrier of 0.49 eV on the flat surface, 0.66 eV over a monolayer step, and 0.98 eV over a ridge to a neighboring {100} facet, which is one 3D ES barrier. Benchmark Solutions for Three-Dimensional Transient Heat Transfer in Two-Dimensional Environments Via the Time Fourier Transform

    Julieta António1,2, António Tadeu2, Luís Godinho2, Nuno Simões2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 1-12, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2005.002.001

Abstract The evaluation of heat propagation in the time domain generated by transient heat sources placed in the presence of three-dimensional media requires the use of computationally demanding numerical schemes. The implementation of numerical 3D solutions may benefit from the existence of benchmark solutions to test the accuracy of approximate schemes.
With this purpose inmind, this article presents analyticalnumerical solutions to evaluate the heat-field elicited by monopole heat sources in the presence of three different inclusions, namely, a cylindrical circular solid inclusion, a cylindrical circular cavity with null fluxes and a cavity with null temperatures prescribed along its boundary, buried in… More >
