Strengthening Reinforced Concrete Beams Externally using Different FRP Systems

    Hisham Abdel-Fattah1, Sameer Hamoush2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 111-112, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.111

Abstract This paper develops Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Composites retrofit systems to enhance the structural performance of deficient reinforced concrete beams. The paper highlights the design of the different FRP systems and then, systems with promising results are used to upgrade deficient beams. Structural evaluation for retrofitted beams is performed to evaluate the ductility and strength performance. This study mainly focuses on the uses of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP), Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) and hybrid reinforced plastics that use a mixture of carbon and glass fibers. As part of the design of the FRP systems, an experimental program was… More >

Development of a new integrated welding mechanism combined with ultrasonic and rotary welding

Kuen Ming Shu1, Chien Chih Chen2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 109-110, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.109

Abstract Ultrasonic welding is the joining or reforming of thermoplastics through the use of heat generated from high-frequency mechanical motion. Rotary welding is a technique to press two parts together and one part is hold fixed the other rotates at high speed, the friction between the two parts generate heat which causes the parts to melt at the interface, when rotation stops, the weld cools down and solidifies. In this research, an experimental set-up integrated these two different welding processes in one machine set was designed and fabricated to provide a tool to study the integrated welding mechanism.

    Mani Khezri1, Alireza Hashemian1, Hossein M. Shodja1,2,3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 99-108, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.099

Abstract Meshless methods using kernel approximation like reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) and gradient RKPM (GRKPM) generally use a set of particles to discretize the subjected domain. One of the major steps in discretization procedure is determination of associated volumes particles. In a non-uniform or irregular configuration of particles, determination of these volumes comprises some difficulties. This paper presents a straightforward numerical method for determination of related volumes and conducts a survey on influence of different assumption about computing the volume for each particle. Stress intensity factor (SIF) as a major representing parameter in fracture of solids is calculated by employing… More >

Applications of Two-dimensional Parameter-induced Stochastic Resonance in Nonlinear Image Processing

    Bohou Xu1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 97-98, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.097

Abstract Stochastic resonance is a mechanical concept and may be used to image processing. This paper aims to develop an elementary theory of two-dimensional parameter-induced stochastic resonance (PSR) in order to contribute a new approach to nonlinear image processing. For tackling applications of stochastic resonance (SR) in image processing where adding noise may not be an easy task, we propose to generalize the concept of parameter-induced stochastic resonance from the one-dimensional case to the two-dimensional case. Specially, a novel two-dimensional system which demonstrates the feature of parameter-induced stochastic resonance is proposed for nonlinear image processing. An interesting feature of this paper… More >

Bipolar coordinates, image method and method of fundamental solutions

    Jeng-Tzong Chen1,2, S. C. Shieh1, Y. T. Lee1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 95-96, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.095

Abstract Green's functions of Laplace problems with circular boundaries are solved by using three approaches, analytical, semi-analytical and numerical solutions. For the analytical solution, we derive the Green's function by using the bipolar coordinates. Three kinds of semi-analytical solutions using (a). image method, (b). the null field BIE using the Green's third identity, and (c). the null field BIE in conjunction with superposition technique using the addition theorem are considered. A numerical method using the image concept is also employed to study the optimal location of MFS. It is interesting to find that the two frozen images appear on the two… More >

Development and Evaluation of Linear Characteristic of a Complex Flexure Hinge

    Su Ji-Jun1,2, Zhang Zhao-Cheng1, Hu Hong1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 87-94, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.087

Abstract This paper concentrates on the development and evaluation of linear characteristics of a complex flexure hinge with high accuracy and large stiffness. The flexure hinge mechanism is used to clamp the shaft of a micropositioning stage based on the inchworm principle. Six key parameters of the flexure hinge are optimized by using finite element method. Developed flexure hinge has very good effects on the clamping and resilience that are accurate and reasonable. The evaluation result shows that the flexure hinge has excellent linear characteristic. More >

A moving modified Trefftz method for inverse Laplace problems in two dimensional multiply-connected domain

    C.-L. Kuo, C.-S. Liu

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 85-86, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.085

Abstract In this paper, the inverse problems in a multiply connected domain governed by the Laplace equation have been investigated numerically by the developed moving modified Trefftz method. When solving the direct Laplace problem with the conventional Trefftz method, one may treat the ill-posed linear algebraic equations because the solution is obtained by expanding the diverging series; while when the inverse Laplace problem is encountered, it is more difficult to treat the more seriously ill-posed behaviors because the incomplete boundary data, and its solution, if exists, does not depend on the given boundary data continuously. Even many researchers have proposed lots… More >

Multicriterion statistical extrapolation for a preset prediction in performance sport

    Emil Budescu1, Mircea Stefanovici2, Ioan Iacob3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 84-84, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.084

Abstract The present paper presents the issues related to the dynamic series adjustment in order to determine the probability to reach preset values of performance, in the stated period of time and of known statistical chronological series. So, with trend functions, one can approximate the variation tendency in time of the sportive performance parameter, the difficulty being, though, the weight of each dynamic series of statistical data in the probability evaluation of performance. Each dynamic series represents values of the physical and physical tests monitored over a training phase, so over a stated period of time. Based on the structural analyses… More >
