Catheterization of the bladder to drain urine, obtain a urine sample, or instill solutions into the bladder is performed routinely every day, around the world, on and by innumerable patients. The wide applicability of this medical intervention proliferated rapidly after the recognition and description by Dr. Jack Lapides and his associates in 1972 that clean, and not sterile, catheterization could be used to manage urinary retention from neurogenic bladder. As stated by the author of this book, clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is a method of regularly emptying the bladder through the urethra or bladder stoma using a catheter under clean conditions. This book aims at covering the concept and technique of CIC by providing a detailed description of CIC in male, female, and pediatric patients, outlining the clinical applications of CIC, and lastly, by reviewing the effects of catheterization on the patient.
The purpose of this book is to describe the history, applications and indications, technique, necessary tools and options, and effects of clean intermittent catheterization. The book accomplishes the purpose in a well-organized and succinct style which is informative and easy to read, for medical personnel and patients alike.
This book is a valuable reference for any medical personnel who perform intermittent catheterization. Specifically, the book is an important reference for health care workers, urology residents, and pediatric urology fellows, rehabilitation and neurology staff, and stoma therapists. Sections of this book can also be useful for patients and families who practice intermittent catheterization. As a pediatric urologist with a career long dedication to patients with neurogenic bladder, the author offers an authoritative oversight on this important medical technique.
A review of the table of contents offers a perspective about the general aspects of CIC in chapters that cover the history and evolution of CIC, anatomy, technique, indications, prevention of complications, and more specialized aspects of CIC such as pediatric CIC, CIC as adjunctive measure to sacral neuromodulation and urinary diversion, and the approach of partial CIC when patients combines micturition with CIC. One can easily follow the list of chapters or peruse a specific chapter. The chapters on the evolution of catheterization and adaptation of CIC and the different type of catheters and lubrication options are particularly informative for general readers. A table on the recommended catheter size for the age of the patients complements the chapter on pediatric CIC. Chapter 5, “CIC Is Not as Terrifying and Complicated as Imagined” is an important chapter as it covers, step by step, the various methods of catheterization with very well-made diagrams.
This is a well written and organized book which provides valuable information to health care providers interested in intermittent catheterization. The intended audience gains useful information from the description of the anatomy, techniques, catheter choices, complications, and contraindications of CIC.
