    Abhijit Sarkar1, M. V. Kunte2, Venkata R. Sonti2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.3&4, pp. 249-268, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.249

Abstract In this article, we show with some formalism that infinite flexible structural acoustic waveguides have a general form for the dispersion equation. The dispersion equation of all such waveguides should conform to a generic form. This allows us to bring out the common features of structural acoustic waveguides. We take three examples to demonstrate this fact, namely, the rectangular, the circular cylindrical and the elliptical geometries. Where necessary, the equations are simplified for applicability to a particular frequency-regime before demonstrating the conformance to the generic form of the dispersion relation. It is then shown that More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.3&4, pp. 229-248, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.229

Abstract A numerical analysis of concrete composites at the mesoscale based on three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technology of X-ray computed tomography (CT) images is presented in this paper. For X-ray CT images of concrete, morphology processing was used to recover complete image information, including borders, and the median filtering method was applied to eliminate potential impurities in the images. The final X-ray CT images obtained after processing for a concrete section were composed of three-value pixels that indicated aggregate particles, mortar matrix and air voids, and the 3D structure of the concrete specimen was reconstructed using the More >

    Abstract In this continuation of a series of our earlier papers, we define a hyper-surface h(x,t) = 0 in terms of the unknown vector x, and a monotonically increasing function Q(t) of a time-like variable t, to solve a system of nonlinear algebraic equations F(x) = 0. If R is a vector related to ∂h / ∂x, , we consider the evolution equation x· = λ[αR + βP], where P = F − R(F·R) / ||R||2 such that P·R = 0; or x· = λ[αF + βP], where P = R − F(F·R) / ||F||2 such that P*·F = 0. From these evolution More >

On Shear Locking in MLPG Solid-Shell Approach

    T. Jarak1, J. Sorić1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.2, pp. 157-194, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.157

Abstract A solid-shell MLPG approach for the numerical analysis of plates and shells is presented. A special attention is devoted to the transversal shear locking effect that appears in the structure thin limit. The theoretical origins of shear locking in the purely displacement-based approach are analyzed by means of the consistency paradigm. It is shown that the spurious constraints appear in the constrained strain field, which lead to the appearance of shear locking and sub-optimal convergence rates. The behaviour of the mixed MLPG approach in the thin limit is also considered. It is determined that in More >

Coupled Wavenumbers in an Infinite Flexible Fluid-Filled Circular Cylindrical Shell : Comparison between Different Shell Theories

    M. V. Kunte1, Venkata R. Sonti1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.2, pp. 119-156, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.119

Abstract Analytical expressions are found for the wavenumbers in an infinite flexible in vacuo / fluid-filled circular cylindrical shell based on different shell-theories using asymptotic methods. Donnell-Mushtari theory (the simplest shell theory) and four higher order theories, namely Love-Timoshenko, Goldenveizer-Novozhilov, Flügge and Kennard-simplified are considered. Initially, in vacuo and fluid-coupled wavenumber expressions are presented using the Donnell-Mushtari theory. Subsequently, the wavenumbers using the higher order theories are presented as perturbations on the Donnell-Mushtari wavenumbers. Similarly, expressions for the resonance frequencies in a finite shell are also presented, using each shell theory. The basic differences between the theories being More >

Development of T-Trefftz Four-Node Quadrilateral and Voronoi Cell Finite Elements for Macro- & Micromechanical Modeling of Solids

    L. Dong1, S. N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.1, pp. 69-118, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.069

Abstract In this paper, we explore three different ways of developing T-Trefftz finite elements of quadrilateral as well as polygonal shapes. In all of these three approaches, in addition to assuming an inter-element compatible displacement field along the element boundary, an interior displacement field for each element is independently assumed as a linear combination of T-Trefftz trial functions. In addition, a characteristic length is defined for each element to scale the T-Trefftz modes, in order to avoid solving systems of ill-conditioned equations. The differences between these three approaches are that, the compatibility between the independently assumed… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.1, pp. 35-68, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.035

Abstract The focus of this work is to demonstrate a novel approach to true CFD automation based on an adaptive Cartesian point distribution process coupled with a Meshless flow solution algorithm. As Meshless method solutions require only an underlying nodal distribution, this approach works well even for complex flow geometries with non-aligned domain boundaries. Through the addition of a so-called shadow layer of body-fitted nodes, application of boundary conditions is simplified considerably, eliminating the stair-casing issues of typical Cartesian-based techniques. This paper describes the approach taken to automatically generate the Meshless nodal distribution, along with the More >

Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Wing

    S. Rajagopal1, Ranjan Ganguli2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.1, pp. 1-34, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.001

Abstract The preliminary wing design of a low speed, long endurance UAV is formulated as a two step optimization problem. The first step performs a single objective aerodynamic optimization and the second step involves a coupled dual objective aerodynamic and structural optimization. During the first step, airfoil geometry is optimized to get maximum endurance parameter at a 2D level with maximum thickness to chord ratio and maximum camber as design variables. Leading edge curvature, trailing edge radius, zero lift drag coefficient and zero lift moment coefficient are taken as constraints. Once the airfoil geometry is finalized,… More >

An Iterative Method Using an Optimal Descent Vector, for Solving an Ill-Conditioned System Bx=b, Better and Faster than the Conjugate Gradient Method

    Chein-Shan Liu1,2, Satya N. Atluri1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.80, No.3&4, pp. 275-298, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.080.275

Abstract To solve an ill-conditioned system of linear algebraic equations (LAEs): Bx - b = 0, we define an invariant-manifold in terms of r := Bx - b, and a monotonically increasing function Q(t) of a time-like variable t. Using this, we derive an evolution equation for dx / dt, which is a system of Nonlinear Ordinary Differential Equations (NODEs) for x in terms of t. Using the concept of discrete dynamics evolving on the invariant manifold, we arrive at a purely iterative algorithm for solving x, which we label as an Optimal Iterative Algorithm (OIA) involving an Optimal Descent Vector More >

Elasto-Plastic Analysis of Structural Problems Using Atomic Basis Functions

    V. Kozulić1, B. Gotovac1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.80, No.3&4, pp. 251-274, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.080.251

Abstract The numerical model for the elasto-plastic analysis of prismatic bars subjected to torsion is developed. The functions implemented in this model are Fup basis functions which belong to the class of atomic functions. The collocation method is used to form a system of equations in which the differential equation of the problem is satisfied in collocation points of closed domain, while boundary conditions are satisfied exactly at the domain boundary. The propagation of plastic zones in the cross-section is monitored by applying the incremental-iterative procedure until failure. An approximate solution of arbitrary accuracy is attained More >
