In vitro Evaluation of Seed Germination in Twelve Alfalfa Cultivars under Salt Stress

Walid Soufan*, Yaser Hassan Dewir, Nasser A. Al-Suhaibani

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.1, pp. 111-120, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.023115

Abstract Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), when exposed to abiotic stress such as salinity, suffers significant losses in yield and productivity. The present study evaluated the salinity tolerance of 12 alfalfa cultivars in vitro using five concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl), ranging from 0 to 250 mmol L−1 . The results obtained in the current study revealed that the Saudi cultivars, Kasimi and Hassawi, and the German cultivar (Berlin) had the highest salinity tolerance in terms of germination percentage (GP), corrected germination rate index (CGRI), days to reach 50% germination (GT50), and ability to form cotyledonary and true leaves. Under mmol L−1More >

Anatomical and chemical characteristics of the seed coat of Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) cv. Baralfa 85 seeds and their association with seed dormancy

    Galussi AA1, JA Argüello2, MM Cerana2, M Maximino3, ME Moya1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.84, No.1, pp. 163-175, 2015, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2015.84.163

Abstract Seeds of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) can exhibit seedcoat imposed dormancy, which produces hard seeds within a seed lot. These seeds do not germinate because they do not imbibe water due to a barrier to water entry in the seed coat. The aim of this work was to analyze the anatomical and chemical characteristics of the testa of alfalfa seeds with respect to water permeability levels. The anatomy of seeds of the cv. Baralfa 85 was studied and structural substances, polyphenols, tannins and cutin present in the testa of seeds of different water permeability levels were determined. The anatomical characteristics… More >

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) production in soil at different bulk densities under controlled conditions

    Martínez-Rubin de Celis E1, E Rivas-Robles2, L Martínez-Corral3, J Frías-Ramírez1, J Orozco-Vidal1, M Fortis-Hernández1, MA Segura Castruita1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.80, pp. 189-192, 2011, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2011.80.189

Abstract Soil compaction or increase of soil bulk density (Da) as a result of applied loads is expressed as an increase in soil bulk density and soil resistance to penetration. Factors in soil compaction due to vehicular traffic include: the amount of load, soil moisture content and the number of passes over the land. Soil compaction results in the formation of layers that can limit or delay (1) the aeration process; (2) root penetration and infiltration; (3) absorption capacity and soil water retention; (4) nutrient movement; (5) heat transfer, and (6) seedling emergency. At the same time, it will produce plants… More >

Database development for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) characterization in an artificial vision system

    Martínez-Corral1 L, E Martínez-Rubín2, F Flores-García1, GC Castellanos2, AR Juárez2, MJD López3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.78, pp. 43-47, 2009, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2009.78.043

Abstract The increasing demand of alfalfa crop production in the Lagunera Region has caused the search of new alternatives to the conventional methods of nutritional and hydric evaluation of alfalfa, where costs and time are optimized. The use of a machine vision system for computerized visual recognition of the crop hydric and/or nutritional stress implies the analysis and processing of certain characteristics, such as color, shape and object dimensions from a digital image. Due to the fact that identification parameters are closely related, it is necessary to compile information from specialists, foliar analysis, mathematical morphology and alfalfa crop deficiency photographs. The… More >
