Abstract Characterization of oregano in Argentina is limited. They are normally known with fancy names, but it is not possible to recognize whether they are genetically equivalent or not. This paper presents a non-volatile polyphenol study of one of the subspecies of Origanum vulgare, O. vulgare L. ssp. viridulum (Martrin-Donos) Nyman [= O. vulgare L. ssp. virens (Hoffmannsegg et Link) Ietswart]. The polyphenols 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)lactic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, 4-(3.4-dihydroxybenzoyloxymethyl)phenyl β-glucoside and rosmarinic acid were isolated and identified by spectroscopic analysis from leaves and inflorescences of classified material.
