    Modeling the Axial Splitting and Curling of Metal Tubes under Crush Loads

    Abstract Plastic deformation and splitting are two important mechanisms of energy dissipation when metal tubes undergo axial crushing. Isotropic J2 plasticity theory combined with a failure criterion is used to model axial splitting and curling of metal tubes undergoing axial crush. The proposed material model is implemented within a finite element (FE) framework using the user material subroutine VUMAT option available in the commercial code ABAQUS. Experimental results from literature are used to validate the model.     Vibration and Buckling of Truss Core Sandwich Plates on An Elastic Foundation Subjected to Biaxial In-plane Loads

    Abstract Truss-core sandwich plates are thin-walled structures comprising a truss core and two thin flat sheets. Since no direct analytical solution for the dynamic response of such structures exists, the complex three dimensional (3D) systems are idealized as equivalent 2D homogeneous continuous plates. The macroscopic effective bending and transverse shear stiffness are derived. Two representative core topologies are considered: pyramidal truss core and tetrahedral truss core.     Abstract In this paper, the global nonlinear Galerkin method is used to perform an accurate and efficient analysis of the large deflection behavior of a simply-supported rectangular plate under combined loads. Through applying the Galerkin method to the governing nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of the plate, we derive a system of coupled third order nonlinear algebraic equations (NAEs).     Abstract An experimental program for collapse of curved stiffened composite shell structures encountered a wide range of initial and deep buckling mode shapes. This paper presents work to determine the significance of the buckling deformations for determining the final collapse loads and to understand the source of the variation. A finite element analysis is applied to predict growth of damage that causes the disbonding of stiffeners and defines a load displacement curve to final collapse.
