CFD MODELLING AND VALIDATION OF COMBUSTION IN DIRECT INJECTION COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINE FUELLED WITH JATROPHA OIL BLENDS WITH DIESEL

    Biswajit De*, Rajsekhar Panua

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.5, pp. 1-6, 2014, DOI:10.5098/hmt.5.7

Abstract This paper presents a pre-mixed combustion model for diesel and Jatropha oil blends combustion studies. Jatropha oil blends are considered as a mixture of diesel and Jatropha oil. CFD package, FLUENT 6.3 is used for modeling the complex combustion phenomenon in compression ignition engine. The experiments are carried out on a single cylinder, four strokes, water cooled direct injection compression ignition engine at compression ratio of 17.5 at full load condition at constant speed of 1500 rpm fuelled with diesel and jatropha oil blends with diesel. The numerical model is solved by considering pressure based, implicit and unsteady solver and… More >

EFFECTS OF GEOMETRIC PARAMETERS FOR WAVY FINNED-TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER IN TURBULENT FLOW: A CFD MODELING

    Arafat A. Bhuiyana,c, M. Ruhul Aminb, Jamal Naserc, A. K. M. Sadrul Islama

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.6, pp. 1-11, 2015, DOI:10.5098/hmt.6.5

Abstract In this study, the effects of thermal and hydraulic characteristics of wavy fin and tube heat exchanger are investigated. Simulation has been carried out by a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, ANSYS CFX12.0. The main objective of this study is to investigate the flow characteristics in turbulent flow. Results are predicted for the turbulent flow regime (2100≤Re≤7000) and compared with author’s previous work for laminar (400 ≤Re≤1200) and transitional (1300≤Re≤2000) flow regime. Regarding turbulence, the k-ω model was used to predict the turbulent flow characteristics with 5% turbulence intensity. Predicted results were compared with the experimental data for the purpose… More >

CFD MODELING OF NATURAL CONVECTION HEAT TRANSFER OF TIO2-WATER NANOFLUID IN A CYLINDRICAL CONTAINER

    Seyed Milad Mirabedin*

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.7, pp. 1-6, 2016, DOI:10.5098/hmt.7.17

Abstract This work focuses on numerical validation of natural convection heat transfer of TiO2-water nanofluids in a cylindrical container using COMSOL. The main aim of this study is to examine different available approaches to calculate effective thermal conductivity and compare them with experimental data available in the literature. Simulation results show that for considered mixture, average Nusselt number decreases by increasing Rayleigh number and particle volume fraction. It has been found that only one model was able to represent similar trends for given particle volume fractions, compared to experimental results. More >

A CFD Model to Evaluate Near-Surface Oil Spill from a Broken Loading Pipe in Shallow Coastal Waters

    Portia Felix1, Lee Leon1,*, Derek Gay1, Stefano Salon2, Hazi Azamathulla1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.20, No.1, pp. 59-77, 2024, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2023.028031

Abstract Oil spills continue to generate various issues and concerns regarding their effect and behavior in the marine environment, owing to the related potential for detrimental environmental, economic and social implications. It is essential to have a solid understanding of the ways in which oil interacts with the water and the coastal ecosystems that are located nearby. This study proposes a simplified model for predicting the plume-like transport behavior of heavy Bunker C fuel oil discharging downward from an acutely-angled broken pipeline located on the water surface. The results show that the spill overall profile is articulated in three major flow… More >

    E. Flilihia,† , E. H. Sebbara, D. Achemlala, T. EL Rhafikia, M. Sritib, E. Chaabelasric

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.18, pp. 1-6, 2022, DOI:10.5098/hmt.18.39

Abstract In this paper, we made a numerical simulation of convective heat transfer in a rectangular section pipe of a air flat plate solar collector using three forms of the absorber plate namely, simple shape, rectangular-shape, and half circle-shape. The flow is considered laminar and stationary, where the heat exchange between the absorber plate and the fluid takes place in useful area. The computer code in fluid dynamics, the fluent, is applied to integrate the governing equations on each control volume. A detailed description of the fluid flow and heat transfer in the rectangular channel was made. Several simulation were carried… More >

VAPOUR ABSORPTION PROCESS IN AN NH3/LINO3 BUBBLE ABSORBER USING AN OPTIMIZED CFD MODEL

Andrés Zapataa , Carlos Amarisb,*, Alexis Sagastumea, Andrés Rodrígueza

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.19, pp. 1-9, 2022, DOI:10.5098/hmt.19.33

Abstract The present study aims to assess the vapour bubble absorption into the ammonia/lithium nitrate (NH3/LiNO3) solution by using an optimized CFD model. A detailed methodology to build up the CFD model is presented, as well as its validation using experimental data. The operating conditions set corresponds to an absorption chiller driven by low-temperature heat sources such as solar energy in warm environments. Results evidenced that the Volume of Fluid and Mixture models are adequate to be used in the CFD model to predict the absorption process in the bubble absorber assessed depending on the mesh density refinement. Moreover, the heat… More >

    Andres F. Osorio1, Ruben Osorio1, Reginald Tran1, Andres Ceballos1, Alain Kassab1, Eduardo Divo2, I. Ricardo Argueta-Morales3, William M. DeCampli3,4

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.15, No.4, pp. 123-124, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.015.123

Abstract Presently, mechanical support is the most promising alternative to cardiac transplantation. Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) were originally used to provide mechanical circulatory support in patients waiting planned heart transplantation (“bridge-to-transplantation” therapy). The success of short-term bridge devices led to clinical trials evaluating the clinical suitability of long-term support (“destination” therapy) with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The first larger-scale, randomized trial that tested long-term support with a LVAD reported a 44% reduction in the risk of stroke or death in patients with a LVAD. In spite of the success of LVADs as bridge-to-transplantation and long-term support. Patients carrying these devices… More >

Simulation Studies of A 76MM Hydrocyclone

    K.Udaya Bhaskar1,2, Sumit Tiwari2, N. Ramakrishnan2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 13-22, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2005.002.013

Abstract The investigation pertains to establishing a simulation methodology for understanding the separation characteristics of a typical hydrocyclone where the work was carried out using a commercially available CFD software. The studies included water flow profiles, water throughput {\&} product split, particle distribution etc. and the simulated results are further validated with suitably performed experiments. The work essentially highlights the performance of the hydrocyclone using numerical studies where water is used as a primary phase and solid particles as secondary ones. This methodology is expected to be useful in the design of hydrocyclones and optimizing the processes. More >
