Prabakaran Rajamanickam1, Shiloah Elizabeth Darmanayagam1,*, Sunil Retmin Raj Cyril Raj2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.67, No.1, pp. 709-722, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.014347 - 12 January 2021

Abstract Liver Segmentation is one of the challenging tasks in detecting and classifying liver tumors from Computed Tomography (CT) images. The segmentation of hepatic organ is more intricate task, owing to the fact that it possesses a sizeable quantum of vascularization. This paper proposes an algorithm for automatic seed point selection using energy feature for use in level set algorithm for segmentation of liver region in CT scans. The effectiveness of the method can be determined when used in a model to classify the liver CT images as tumorous or not. This involves segmentation of the… More >

Patrick Houghton, Amanda Myers, Christian Ericson, David D. Thiel, Timothy D. Lyon

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.27, No.5, pp. 10411-10414, 2020

Abstract Spontaneous extrusion of a kidney stone is an extremely rare event with few reported cases. We present the unusual case of a 62-year-old female who presented with worsening of fever and fank pain over a 5 day period. Imaging revealed retroperitoneal and abdominal wall abscesses that upon evaluation of prior imaging were attributed to spontaneously extruded kidney stones. Prior reports suggest surgical exploration and extraction is the preferred treatment option for extruded renal calculi. Based on the experience presented here, conservative management may be an attractive frst-line treatment option for patients with extruded renal stones and More >

    Christopher Dall1,2, Kenneth Lim1,2, George Khludenev3, Krishnan Venkatesan1,2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.27, No.6, pp. 10496-10499, 2020

Abstract Acute vasitis, or inflammation of the vas deferens, is a rare condition that classically presents with unilateral groin pain radiating into the scrotum and a bulge or induration along the inguinal canal. As a result, it mimics and is often mistaken for more common pathologies such as inguinal hernia, epididymo-orchitis or testicular torsion. A misdiagnosis may lead to unnecessary surgery and morbidity. Here, we present a case of acute vasitis which was originally diagnosed as an incarcerated inguinal hernia. Finally, we review the imaging findings, which can often be subtle and misinterpreted or missed. More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.16, No.5, pp. 857-869, 2020, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2020.09565 - 09 October 2020

Abstract To explore the inherent characteristics of combustion-induced heat transfer in a flat flame furnace, a sophisticated hybrid method is introduced by combining a computer-based tomography (CT)-algebraic iterative algorithm and Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS). This technique is used to analyze the distribution of vapor concentration and furnace temperature. It is shown that by using this strategy a variety of details can be obtained, which would otherwise be out of reach. More >

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes one hotspot in the field of the medical images analysis and provides rather promising solution. Although some research has been explored in smart diagnosis for the common diseases of urinary system, some problems remain unsolved completely A nine-layer Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is proposed in this paper to classify the renal Computed Tomography (CT) images. Four group of comparative experiments prove the structure of this CNN is optimal and can achieve good performance with average accuracy about 92.07 ± 1.67%. Although our renal CT data is not very large, we do More >

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.17, No.2, pp. 63-74, 2020, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2020.08750

Abstract Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been widely used for studying intracranial aneurysm hemodynamics, while its use for guiding clinical strategy is still in development. In this study, CFD simulations helped inform treatment decision for a middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysm case was investigated. A patient with a 10.4 × 9.8 mm aneurysm attached with a small aneurysm at the edge of the trifurcation in the left MCA was included in this study. For removing the MCA aneurysm, two scenarios were considered: Plan-A involved clipping the small aneurysm and Plan-B involved clipping the whole aneurysm. A… More >

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.14, No.6, pp. 895-900, 2019, DOI:10.1111/chd.12839

Abstract Objective: As adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) grow older, preoperative screening for coronary artery disease (CAD) may be indicated prior to CHD surgery. Data regarding the indications for preoperative CAD screening in this population are limited. Current practice is to follow guidelines for patients with valvular heart dis‐ ease; however, the risk for CAD in certain congenital heart diagnoses may be higher than the general population. This study aimed to assess the results of preoperative CAD screening in patients prior to CHD surgery.
    Design: Retrospective study.
    Setting: Single tertiary center.
Patients: Patients ≥35 years that had CHD surgery… More >

Comparison of Aortic Flow Patterns in Patients with and without Aortic Valve Disease: Hemodynamic Simulation Based on PC-MRI and CTA Data

    Lijian Xu1,2, Lekang Yin3, Fuyou Liang1,2,*

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.16, Suppl.1, pp. 71-72, 2019, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2019.05741

Abstract Recent studies have revealed that aortic valve diseases are associated with the increased incidence of the aortopathy development. However, the influence of aortic valve diseases on aortic hemodynamics remains unclear. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the hemodynamic differences in patients with and without aortic valve disease through patient-specific simulations performed on two aorta models (BAV with severe stenosis vs. normal tricuspid aortic valve (TAV)). Realistic geometries and boundary conditions were obtained from computed tomography angiography (CTA) and phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) measurements, respectively. In addition, 4D-MRI were performed to validate More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.59, No.2, pp. 669-686, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.04590

Abstract Accurately finding the region of interest is a very vital step for segmenting organs in medical image processing. We propose a novel approach of automatically identifying region of interest in Computed Tomography Image (CT) images based on temporal and spatial data . Our method is a 3 stages approach, 1) We extract organ features from the CT images by adopting the Hounsfield filter. 2)We use these filtered features and introduce our novel approach of selecting observable feature candidates by calculating contours’ area and automatically detect a seed point. 3) We use a novel approach to More >

Jeong Yong Jeon*1, Misu Lee*†1, Sang Hyun Whang*, Jung-Whan Kim, Arthur Cho*, Mijin Yun*

    Oncology Research, Vol.26, No.1, pp. 71-81, 2018, DOI:10.3727/096504017X14902648894463

Abstract Altered energy metabolism is a biochemical fingerprint of cancer cells. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) shows reciprocal [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and [11C]acetate uptake, as revealed by positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Previous studies have focused on the role of FDG uptake in cancer cells. In this study, we evaluated the mechanism and roles of [11C]acetate uptake in human HCCs and cell lines. The expression of monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) was assessed to determine the transporters of [11C]acetate uptake in HCC cell lines and human HCCs with different [11C]acetate uptake. Using two representative cell lines with widely different [11C]acetate uptake (HepG2 for high… More >
