Shufang Song*, Lu Wang, Yuhua Yan

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.125, No.1, pp. 383-399, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.09588 - 18 September 2020

Abstract The robust design optimization (RDO) is an effective method to improve product performance with uncertainty factors. The robust optimal solution should be not only satisfied the probabilistic constraints but also less sensitive to the variation of design variables. There are some important issues in RDO, such as how to judge robustness, deal with multi-objective problem and black-box situation. In this paper, two criteria are proposed to judge the deterministic optimal solution whether satisfies robustness requirment. The robustness measure based on maximum entropy is proposed. Weighted sum method is improved to deal with the objective function, More >

    Yingjun Wang1, Zhongyuan Liao1, Shengyu Shi1, *, Zhenpei Wang2, *, Leong Hien Poh3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.122, No.2, pp. 433-458, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.08680 - 01 February 2020

Abstract Focusing on the structural optimization of auxetic materials using data-driven methods, a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) based design framework is developed for petal-shaped auxetics using isogeometric analysis. Adopting a NURBS-based parametric modelling scheme with a small number of design variables, the highly nonlinear relation between the input geometry variables and the effective material properties is obtained using BPNN-based fitting method, and demonstrated in this work to give high accuracy and efficiency. Such BPNN-based fitting functions also enable an easy analytical sensitivity analysis, in contrast to the generally complex procedures of typical shape and size sensitivity More >

    Hui Zhi1,2, Sanyang Liu1

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.25, No.4, pp. 815-825, 2019, DOI:10.31209/2019.100000085

Abstract In this paper, we proposed a hybrid algorithm, which is embedding the genetic operators in the global-best-guided artificial bee colony algorithms called GABCGA to solve the nonlinear design optimization problems. The genetic algorithm has no memory function and good at find global optimization with large probability, but the artificial bee colony algorithm not have selection, crossover and mutation operator and most significant at local search. The hybrid algorithm balances the exploration and exploitation ability further by combining the advantages of both. The experimental results of five engineering optimization and comparisons with existing approaches show that More >

Structural Design Optimization Using Isogeometric Analysis: A Comprehensive Review

    Yingjun Wang1,*, Zhenpei Wang2,*, Zhaohui Xia3, Leong Hien Poh2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.117, No.3, pp. 455-507, 2018, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.04603

Abstract Isogeometric analysis (IGA), an approach that integrates CAE into conventional CAD design tools, has been used in structural optimization for 10 years, with plenty of excellent research results. This paper provides a comprehensive review on isogeometric shape and topology optimization, with a brief coverage of size optimization. For isogeometric shape optimization, attention is focused on the parametrization methods, mesh updating schemes and shape sensitivity analyses. Some interesting observations, e.g. the popularity of using direct (differential) method for shape sensitivity analysis and the possibility of developing a large scale, seamlessly integrated analysis-design platform, are discussed in More >

Differing Mapping using Ensemble of Metamodels for Global Variable-fidelity Metamodeling

    Qi Zhou1, Xinyu Shao1, Ping Jiang1,2, Longchao Cao1, Hui Zhou1, Leshi Shu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.106, No.5, pp. 323-355, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.106.323

Abstract Computational simulation models with different fidelity have been widely used in complex systems design. However, running the most accurate simulation models tends to be very time-consuming and can therefore only be used sporadically, while incorporating less accurate, inexpensive models into the design process may result in inaccurate design alternatives. To make a trade-off between high accuracy and low expense, variable fidelity (VF) metamodeling approaches that aim to integrate information from both low fidelity (LF) and high-fidelity (HF) models have gained increasing popularity. In this paper, a Difference Mapping Framework using Ensemble of Metamodels (DMF-EM) for… More >

A New Multi-objective Reliability-based Robust Design Optimization Method

    Zichun Yang1,2, Maolin Peng1,3,4, Yueyun Cao1, Lei Zhang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.98, No.4, pp. 409-442, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.098.409

Abstract A new multi-objective reliability-based robust design optimization (M ORBRDO) model is proposed which integrats the multi-objective robustness, the reliability sensitivity robustness and the six sigma robustness design idea. The pure-quadratic polynomial functions are adopted to fit the performance objective functions (POF) and the ultimate limited state functions (ULSF) of the structure. Based on the ULSF and the checking point method, the equations of the first order reliability index are calculated. The mapping transformation method is employed when the non-normal distribution variables are included. According to the POF and the Taylor series expansion method, the equations… More >

    B. Kriegesmann1, R. Rolfes1, E. L. Jansen1, I. Elishakoff2, C. Hühne3, A. Kling3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 177-200, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.032.177

Abstract Four different approaches for the design of axially compressed cylindrical shells are presented, namely (1) the knockdown factor (KDF) concept, (2) the single perturbation load approach, (3) a probabilistic design procedure and (4) the convex anti-optimization approach. The different design approaches take the imperfection sensitivity and the scatter of input parameters into account differently. In this paper, the design of a composite cylinder is optimized considering the ply angles as design variables. The KDF concept provides a very conservative design load and in addition an imperfection sensitive design, whereas the other approaches lead to a More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 93-94, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.020.093

Abstract Lunar lander may experience various impact loadings when it makes a landing on the lunar surface. Due to the reason, shock absorption system of lunar lander should be designed to absorb the landing energy of lunar lander efficiently for a successful lunar mission. Shock absorption system should be reliable, and the entire landing energy should be absorbed into the shock absorption system to prevent a critical bouncing or turn-over. One the other hand, to protect the payloads, excessive deceleration should be avoided while absorbing the landing energy.

    S. Rajagopal1, Ranjan Ganguli2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.1, pp. 1-34, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.001

Abstract The preliminary wing design of a low speed, long endurance UAV is formulated as a two step optimization problem. The first step performs a single objective aerodynamic optimization and the second step involves a coupled dual objective aerodynamic and structural optimization. During the first step, airfoil geometry is optimized to get maximum endurance parameter at a 2D level with maximum thickness to chord ratio and maximum camber as design variables. Leading edge curvature, trailing edge radius, zero lift drag coefficient and zero lift moment coefficient are taken as constraints. Once the airfoil geometry is finalized,… More >
