    Abstract Four different approaches for the design of axially compressed cylindrical shells are presented, namely (1) the knockdown factor (KDF) concept, (2) the single perturbation load approach, (3) a probabilistic design procedure and (4) the convex anti-optimization approach. The different design approaches take the imperfection sensitivity and the scatter of input parameters into account differently.     Abstract A new multi-objective reliability-based robust design optimization (M ORBRDO) model is proposed which integrats the multi-objective robustness, the reliability sensitivity robustness and the six sigma robustness design idea.     Abstract An approach to support the computational aerodynamic design process is presented and demonstrated through the application of a novel multi-objective variant of the Tabu Search optimization algorithm for continuous problems to the aerodynamic design optimization of turbomachinery blades.     Abstract This paper studies the reliability-based multiobjective optimization by using a new interval strategy to model uncertain parameters. A new satisfaction degree of interval, which is significantly extended from [0, 1] to [–∞, +∞], is introduced into the non-probabilistic reliability-based optimization. Based on a predefined satisfaction degree level, the uncertain constraints can be effectively transformed into deterministic ones. The interval number programming method is applied to change each uncertain objective function to a deterministic two-objective optimization. The suggested sequential approximate optimization procedure utilizes a newly proposed sample-reusable meta-model along with the trust region algorithm.     Abstract This paper proposes a gradient-based progressive optimization technique, which can be efficiently combined with black-box simulation codes. Its efficiency relies on the simultaneous convergence of the flow solution, of the gradient evaluation, and of the design update, as well as on the use of progressively finer grids.     Abstract The present work is concerned with a numerical study of the performance of a conical annular centrifugal contractor through the analysis of the flow properties when the apex angle is changed for different imposed axial flows.
