3D Echo-Based Patient-Specific Computational Left Ventricle Models to Quantify Material Properties and Stress/Strain Differences between Ventricles with and without Infarct

    Rui Fan1, Dalin Tang2,3, Jing Yao4, Chun Yang5, Di Xu4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.99, No.6, pp. 491-508, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.099.491

Abstract Identifying ventricle material properties and its infarct area after heart attack noninvasively is of great important in clinical applications. An echo-based computational modeling approach was proposed to investigate left ventricle (LV) mechanical properties and stress conditions using patient-specific data. Echo data was acquired from one healthy volunteer (male, age: 58) and a male patient (age: 60) who had an acute inferior myocardial infarction one week before echo image acquisition. Standard echocardiograms were obtained using an ultrasound machine (E9, GE Mechanical Systems, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) with a 3V probe and data were segmented for model construction. Finite element models were constructed to… More >

The Far-field Green’s Integral in Stokes Flow from the Boundary Integral Formulation

    E.A. Chadwick1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.96, No.3, pp. 177-184, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.096.177

Abstract In boundary integral methods for Stokes flow, the far-field Green’s integral is usually taken to be zero without proof. However, this is not obviously the case, the reason being that Stokes flow is a near-field approximation and breaks down in the far-field. Here, we show that it is zero as expected by matching it to a far-field Green’s integral in Oseen flow. Hence, there are similarities to the matched asymptotic procedure matching a near-field Stokes flow to a far-field Oseen flow, except in this case a different and new procedure is required to deal with the Green’s integrals. In particular,… More >

Computation of Acoustic Far Field Scattering Cross Section from Plain and Intersecting Thin Bodies

    P.R. Venkatesh1, B.Chandrasekhar2 , M.M.Benal3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.52, No.1, pp. 83-104, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.052.083

Abstract In this work, node based basis functions are used to solve the acoustic scattering from plain thin bodies like plates, discs; and intersecting thin bodies like fins on a cylinder. Node based basis functions are defined on the vertices of triangles generated by triangular patch modeling, and these functions are used to define the unknown source distribution. Also the same functions are used as testing functions in the method of moment's solution. Three kinds of nodes were treated for defining the basis functions, namely, boundary node, non-boundary node and non boundary intersecting node. Also, three kinds of bodies were considered… More >

Coupling of BEM/FEM for Time Domain Structural-Acoustic Interaction Problems

    S.T. Lie1, Guoyou Yu, Z. Zhao2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 171-182, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.171

Abstract The BEM/FEM coupling procedure is applied to 2-D time domain structural-acoustic interaction problems. The acoustic domain for fluid or air is modeled by BEM scheme that is suitable for both finite and infinite domains, while the structure is modeled by FEM scheme. The input impact, which can be either plane waves or non-plane waves, can either be forces acting directly on the structural-acoustic system or be explosion sources. The far field or near field explosion sources which are difficult to be simulated by finite element modeling, can be simulated exactly by boundary element modeling as internal sources. CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.40, No.2, pp. 145-164, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.040.145

Abstract Electro-elastic surface/interface around nano-sized piezoelectric inclusions shows great effect on the response of piezoelectric nano-structures. In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed to examine the surface/interface effect on the electromechanical responses around a nano-sized elliptical piezoelectric inclusion embedded in an infinite piezoelectric matrix under far-field loading with an arbitrary angle, and the effect of loading angle is considered Combining the conformal mapping technique and electro-elastic surface/interface theory, a closed form solution of this problem is obtained and the interactive effect between the surface/interface and the aspect ratio of the elliptical inclusion is examined.
