Corotational Formulation of Reduced Order Homogenization

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.3, pp. 177-198, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.177

Abstract A corotational formulation for reduced order homogenization is presented. While in principle the proposed method is valid for problems with arbitrary large strains, it is computational advantageous over the classical direct computational homogenization method for large rotations but moderate unit cell distortions. We validate the method for several large deformation problems including: (i) hat-section composite beam with two-dimensional chopped tow composite architecture, (ii) polyethylene microstructure consisting of 'hard' and 'soft' domains (segments), and (iii) fiber framework called fiberform either embedded or not in an amorphous matrix. Numerical Formulations for the Prediction of Deformation, Strain and Stress of Un-patterned ETFE Cushions

    N.J. Bartle1, P.D. Gosling1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.20, No.1, pp. 19-62, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.020.019

Abstract ETFE cushions are increasingly being used to form high-profile facades and structural forms. This investigation aims to extend an analytical theory of large deformation in order to predict the shape and stress distributions of an un-patterned square ETFE cushion without the need to resort to discretised numerical methods. In order to assess the validity of the theoretical procedure a prototype cushion has been analysed using a finite element simulation. The theoretical procedure is also compared with alternative approximate equations proposed for the design of ETFE cushions. More >

An Eulerian-Based Formulation for Studying the Evolution of the Microstructure under Plastic Deformations

    S.Ahmadi1, B.L.Adams1 , D.T.Fullwood1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 141-170, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.014.141

Abstract In this paper, a model is introduced to examine the evolution of the microstructure function under plastic deformations. This model is based upon a double continuity relationship that conserves both material particles in the mass space and orientations in the orientation space. An Eulerian description of the motion of material particles and orientations is considered, and continuity relations are derived for both spaces. To show how the proposed model works, two different case studies are provided. In the mass space, the continuity relation is used to examine the evolution of the microstructure function of a two-phase (isotropic) material; while, in… More >

The Method of Fundamental Solutions for One-Dimensional Wave Equations

    Gu, M. H.1, Young, D. L.1,2, Fan, C. M.1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 185-208, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.011.185

Abstract A meshless numerical algorithm is developed for the solutions of one-dimensional wave equations in this paper. The proposed numerical scheme is constructed by the Eulerian-Lagrangian method of fundamental solutions (ELMFS) together with the D'Alembert formulation. The D'Alembert formulation is used to avoid the difficulty to constitute the linear algebraic system by using the ELMFS in dealing with the initial conditions and time-evolution. Moreover the ELMFS based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian method (ELM) and the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) is a truly meshless and quadrature-free numerical method. In this proposed wave model, the one-dimensional wave equation is reduced to an implicit… More >

Comparison of New Formulations for Martensite Start Temperature of Fe-Mn-Si Shape Memory Alloys Using Geneting Programming and Neural Networks

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 65-96, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.010.065

Abstract This work proposed an alternative formulation for the prediction of martensite start temperature (Ms) of Fe-Mn-Si shape memory alloys (SMAs) depending on the various compositions and heat treatment techniques by using Neural Network (NN) and genetic programming (GP) soft computing techniques. The training and testing patterns of the proposed NN and GP formulations are based on well established experimental results from the literature. The NN and GP based formulation results are compared with experimental results and found to be quite reliable with a very high correlation (R2=0.955 for GEP and 0.999 for NN). More >
