    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.1, pp. 49-71, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.049

Abstract A common difficulty arises in characterizing the anisotropic properties of a thin sheet of anisotropic material, especially in the transverse direction. This difficulty is even more phenomenal for measuring its mechanical properties on account of its thickness. As the prelude of such investigation, this paper proposes a novel approach to identify the thermal conductivities of an unknown thin layer of anisotropic material. For this purpose, the unknown layer is sandwiched in isotropic materials with known conductivities. Prescribing proper boundary conditions, one may easily measure temperature data on a few sample boundary points. Therefore, the anisotropic thermal conductivities can be calculated… More >

Problems of Micromorphic Elastic Bodies Approached by Lagrange Identity Method

    M. Marin1, S. R. Mahmoud2,3, K. S. Al-Basyouni4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.37, No.1, pp. 23-37, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.037.023

Abstract Taking advantage of the flexibility of Lagrange’s identity, we prove the uniqueness theorem and some continuous dependence theorems without recourse to any energy conservation law, or to any boundedness assumptions on the constitutive coefficients. Also, we avoid the use of positive definiteness assumptions on the constitutive coefficients, even if these results are related to the difficult mixed problem in elasticity of micromorphic bodies. Leiting Dong1,2, Salah H. Gamal3, Satya N. Atluri2,4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.37, No.1, pp. 1-21, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.037.001

Abstract In this paper, a simple and reliable procedure of stochastic computation is combined with the highly accurate and efficient Trefftz Computational Grains (TCG), for a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of heterogeneous materials with microscopic randomness. Material properties of each material phase, and geometrical properties such as particles sizes and distribution, are considered to be stochastic with either a uniform or normal probabilistic distributions. The objective here is to determine how this microscopic randomness propagates to the macroscopic scale, and affects the stochastic characteristics of macroscopic material properties. Four steps are included in this procedure: (1) using the Latin hypercube sampling,… More >

    Ching-Feng Yu1, Wen-Hwa Chen1,2, Kun-Ling Chen1, Hsien-Chie Cheng2,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.36, No.2, pp. 203-229, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.036.203

Abstract The investigation assesses the thermal-mechanical and thermodynamic properties of various graphene sheets using a modified Nosé-Hoover (NH) thermostat method incorporated with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The investigation begins with an exploration of their thermal-mechanical properties at atmospheric pressure, including Young’s modulus, shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio, specific heats and linear and volumetric coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE). Two definitions of the line change ratio (ΔL/L) are utilized to determine the linear CTE of graphene sheets, and the calculations are compared with each other and data in the literature. To estimate the volumetric CTE values, the Connolly surface method is applied to… More >

    Chien-Ching Ma1,2, Yi-Tzu Chen2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.36, No.2, pp. 177-201, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.036.177

Abstract Functionally graded material (FGM) is a particulate composite with continuously changing its thermal and mechanical properties in order to raise the bonding strength in the discrete composite made from different phases of material constituents. Furthermore, FGM is a potent tool to create an intermediate layer in metal–ceramic composites to avoid the properties discontinuities and reduce, thereby, the residual stresses. For the nonhomogeneous problem, the mathematical derivation is much complicated than the homogeneous case since the material properties vary with coordinate. To analyze the problem, the Fourier transform is applied and the general solution in transform domain is obtained. The inverse… More >

Correspondence Relations for Fracture Parameters of Interface Corners in Anisotropic Viscoelastic Materials

    Chyanbin Hwu1, Tai-Liang Kuo2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.36, No.2, pp. 135-153, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.036.135

Abstract The problems of the interface corners between two dissimilar anisotropic viscoelastic materials are studied in this paper. Through the use of the well-known correspondence principle between linear elasticity and linear viscoelasticity, fracture parameters in the Laplace domain can be obtained from the path-independent H-integral for the corresponding problems of anisotropic linear elastic materials. Further application of the correspondence relations for fracture parameters proposed in our recent study then leads us the solutions of fracture parameters in the time domain. To show the applicability and accuracy of the proposed method, several different kinds of numerical examples are presented such as a… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 83-94, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.083

Abstract Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs) are being used in an everexpanding set of applications. For better applications, an analytical methodology using averaging technique of composites is developed to describe the thermo-elastic and thermo-elastoplastic behaviors of a three-layered FGM system subjected to thermal loading Solutions using averaging technique of composites for the stress distributions in a generic FGM system subjected to arbitrary temperature loading conditions are presented. The power-law strain hardening behaviour is assumed for the FGM metallic phase and the stress of the metallic phase are calculated to judge the plastic in this work The stress distributions within the FGM systems… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 27-62, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.034.027

Abstract A Reissner's mixed variational theorem (RMVT)-based finite rectangular prism method (FRPM) is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) analysis of sandwich functionally graded material (FGM) plates subjected to mechanical loads, in which the edge conditions of the plates are such that one pair of opposite edges is simply supported and the other pair may be combinations of free, clamped or simply supported edges. The sandwich FGM plate considered consists of two thin and stiff homogeneous material face sheets combined with an embedded thick and soft FGM core, the material properties of which are assumed to obey the powerlaw distributions of the… More >

A New Quasi-Boundary Scheme for Three-Dimensional Backward Heat Conduction Problems

    Chih-Wen Chang1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.24, No.3, pp. 209-238, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.024.209

Abstract In this study, we employ a semi-analytical scheme to resolve the three-dimensional backward heat conduction problem (BHCP) by utilizing a quasi-bound -ary concept. First, the Fourier series expansion method is used to estimate the temperature field u(x, y, z, t) at any time t < T. Second, we ponder a direct regularization by adding an extra term a(x, y, z, 0) to transform a second-kind Fredholm integral equation for u(x, y, z, 0). The termwise separable property of the kernel function allows us to acquire a closed-form regularized solution. In addition, a tactic to determine the regularization parameter is recommended.… More >

    J. Sladek1, V. Sladek1, P. Stanak1, Ch. Zhang2, M. Wünsche2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 35-68, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.023.035

Abstract A contour integral method is developed for the computation of stress intensity, electric and magnetic intensity factors for cracks in continuously nonhomogeneous magnetoelectroelastic solids under a transient dynamic load. It is shown that the asymptotic fields in the crack-tip vicinity in a continuously nonhomogeneos medium are the same as in a homogeneous one. A meshless method based on the local Petrov-Galerkin approach is applied for the computation of the physical fields occurring in the contour integral expressions of intensity factors. A unit step function is used as the test functions in the local weak-form. This leads to local integral equations… More >
