    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.70, No.3, pp. 5821-5834, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.021943 - 11 October 2021

Abstract While the usage of digital ocular fundus image has been widespread in ophthalmology practice, the interpretation of the image has been still on the hands of the ophthalmologists which are quite costly. We explored a robust deep learning system that detects three major ocular diseases: diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma (GLC), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The proposed method is composed of two steps. First, an initial quality evaluation in the classification system is proposed to filter out poor-quality images to enhance its performance, a technique that has not been explored previously. Second, the transfer learning… More >

Abstract Irretrievable loss of vision is the predominant result of Glaucoma in the retina. Recently, multiple approaches have paid attention to the automatic detection of glaucoma on fundus images. Due to the interlace of blood vessels and the herculean task involved in glaucoma detection, the exactly affected site of the optic disc of whether small or big size cup, is deemed challenging. Spatially Based Ellipse Fitting Curve Model (SBEFCM) classification is suggested based on the Ensemble for a reliable diagnosis of Glaucoma in the Optic Cup (OC) and Optic Disc (OD) boundary correspondingly. This research deploys… More >

Abstract Various techniques to diagnose eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma (GLC), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), are possible through deep learning algorithms. A few recent studies have examined a couple of major diseases and compared them with data from healthy subjects. However, multiple major eye diseases, such as DR, GLC, and AMD, could not be detected simultaneously by computer-aided systems to date. There were just high-performance-outcome researches on a pair of healthy and eye-diseased group, besides of four categories of fundus image classification. To have a better knowledge of multi-categorical classification of fundus… More >

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 119-137, 2020, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2020.09529 - 01 July 2020

Abstract Aim: To investigate the relationship between glaucoma and intraocular pressure (IOP), intracranial pressure (ICP), trans-laminar cribrosa pressure difference (TLCPD), and the newly proposed fractional pressure reserve (FPR). Methods: Ten articles were analyzed by meta-analysis, and subgroup analysis of three factors was conducted. Results: The patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG) have higher TLCPD and lower ICP than healthy subjects, with obvious heterogeneity. The greater heterogeneity may arise from different ICP measurements and from different countries or regions. FPR performs better than TLCPD in some ways. Conclusion: Both FPR and TLCPD can More >

Finite Element Modelling Predicts Large Accommodation Induced Optic Nerve Head Deformations

    Xiaofei Wang1,2,*, Yubo Fan1,2

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.16, Suppl.2, pp. 112-112, 2019, DOI:10.32604/mcb.2019.07053

Abstract Accommodation is the ability of the eye to adjust its lens thickness to alter the refractive power through the contraction of ciliary muscles. The loss of accommodation ability due to aging leads to presbyopia, a condition in which the eye is unable to focus on near objects. Glaucoma is a disease that vision is impaired due to damage of the retinal ganglion cell at the optic nerve head (ONH) region, which is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The biomechanical theory of glaucoma suggests that the deformations of ONH tissues could (directly or indirectly)… More >

Abstract Pupillary block is considered as an important cause of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG). In order to investigate the effect of pupillary block on the hydrodynamics of aqueous humor (AH) in anterior chamber (AC) and potential risks, a 3D printed eye model was developed to mimic the AH flow driven by fluid generation, the differential pressure between AC and posterior chambers (PC) and pupillary block. Particle image velocimetry technology was applied to visualize flow distribution. The results demonstrated obvious differences in AH flow with and without pupillary block. Under the normal condition (without pupillary block), the… More >

Abstract This article describes a study based on the use of an instrumented form of applanation and indentation tonometry through eyelid. The methods and devices which are available for the measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) have their own limitations. These cause discomfort to the patients during IOP measurement. Also these methods, used to measure IOP over cornea, need anesthesia. In the present work, an attempt is made to develop a device for the measurement of IOP through eyelid which eliminates the need of anesthesia and enhance the patient’s comfort and convenience of the clinician.
