Construction of MMC-CLCC Hybrid DC Transmission System and Its Power Flow Reversal Control Strategy

    Yechun Xin1, Xinyuan Zhao1, Dong Ding2, Shuyu Chen2, Chuanjie Wang2, Tuo Wang1,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.123, No.1, 2026, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.069748 - 27 December 2025

Abstract To enhance power flow regulation in scenarios involving large-scale renewable energy transmission via high-voltage direct current (HVDC) links and multi-infeed DC systems in load-center regions, this paper proposes a hybrid modular multilevel converter–capacitor-commutated line-commutated converter (MMC-CLCC) HVDC transmission system and its corresponding control strategy. First, the system topology is constructed, and a submodule configuration method for the MMC—combining full-bridge submodules (FBSMs) and half-bridge submodules (HBSMs)—is proposed to enable direct power flow reversal. Second, a hierarchical control strategy is introduced, including MMC voltage control, CLCC current control, and a coordination mechanism, along with the derivation of… More >

Impact of Short-Term Power Shortage from Low Voltage Ride through and DC Commutation Failure on Power Grid Frequency Stability

Wenjia Zhang*, Sixuan Xu, Wanchun Qi, Zhuyi Peng, Wentao Sun

    Energy Engineering, Vol.122, No.6, pp. 2371-2387, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ee.2025.064160 - 29 May 2025

Abstract Countries worldwide are advocating for energy transition initiatives to promote the construction of low-carbon energy systems. The low voltage ride through (LVRT) characteristics of renewable energy units and commutation failures in line commutated converter high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems at the receiving end leads to short-term power shortage (STPS), which differs from traditional frequency stability issues. STPS occurs during the generator’s power angle swing phase, before the governor responds, and is on a timescale that is not related to primary frequency regulation. This paper addresses these challenges by examining the impact of LVRT on… More >

Production of Light Fraction-Based Pyrolytic Fuel from Spirulina platensis Microalgae Using Various Low-Cost Natural Catalysts and Insertion

Indra Mamad Gandidi1,2,*, Sukarni Sukarni3,4, Avita Ayu Permanasari3, Purnami Purnami5, Tuan Amran Tuan Abdullah6, Anwar Johari6, Nugroho Agung Pambudi7,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.121, No.12, pp. 3635-3648, 2024, DOI:10.32604/ee.2024.054943 - 22 November 2024

Abstract The use of catalysts has significantly enhanced the yield and quality of in-situ pyrolysis products. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding pyrolysis approaches that utilize several low-cost natural catalysts (LCC) and their placement within the reactor. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects of various LCC on the in-situ pyrolysis of spirulina platensis microalgae (SPM) and investigate the impact of different types of catalysts. We employed LCC such as zeolite, dolomite, kaolin, and activated carbon, with both layered and uniformly mixed LCC-SPM placements. Each experiment was conducted at a constant temperature of 500°C… More > Graphic Abstract

Blueberry anthocyanins extract attenuates oxidative stress and angiogenesis on an in vitro high glucose-induced retinopathy model through the miR-33/GLCCI1 axis

    WENBIN LUO1, YULING ZOU2, HONGXI WU3, ZHONGYI YANG1, ZHIPENG YOU2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.48, No.8, pp. 1275-1284, 2024, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2024.051045 - 02 August 2024

Abstract Background: Diabetes retinopathy (DR) is a complication of diabetes that affects patients’ vision. Previous studies have found blueberry anthocyanins extract (BAE) can inhibit the progression of DR, but its mechanism is not completely clear. Methods: To study the role of BAE in diabetes retinopathy, we treated human retinal endothelial cells (HRCECs) with 30 mM high glucose to simulate the microenvironment of diabetes retinopathy and used BAE to intervene the in vitro high glucose-induced retinopathy model. HRCEC cell viability and apoptosis rates were examined by Cell Counting Kit 8 (CCK-8) assay and flow cytometry assay. The binding… More >

A Double-Ended Protection Principle for an LCC-VSC-MTDC System with Strong Anti-Interference Ability

Chuanjian Wu, Dahai Zhang*, Jinghan He

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.2, pp. 299-316, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.023532 - 29 November 2022

Abstract The DC grid technology of multi-power supply and multi-drop-point power reception is an effective solution for large-scale renewable energy integration into the power grid. Line-commutated converter-Voltage source converter (LCC-VSC) power grids are one of the more important developmental directions of the future power grid that have occured in recent years. But the multi-terminal high voltage direct current system has the problems of inconsistent boundary characteristics, inconsistent control, and fault response characteristics, which puts higher requirements on the protection scheme. Thus, a completely new protection principle is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the fault characteristics of… More >

A Single-Ended Protection Principle for LCC-VSC-MTDC System with High Resistance Fault Tolerance

Dahai Zhang*, Chuanjian Wu, Jinghan He

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.1, pp. 1-21, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.023304 - 27 October 2022

Abstract Line-commutated converter-voltage source converter (LCC-VSC) power transmission technology does not have the problem of communication failure very usually. It therefore can support the long-distance, long-capacity transmission of electric energy. However, factors such as topology, control strategy, and short-circuit capacities make the traditional protection principles not fully applicable to LCC-VSC hybrid transmission systems. To enhance the reliability of hybrid DC systems, a single-ended principle based on transmission coefficients is proposed and produced. First, the equivalent circuit of the LCC-VSC hybrid DC system is analyzed and the expression of the first traveling wave is deduced accordingly. Then, More >
