    Brief note: Differences in intracellular localization of corn stunt spiroplasmas in magnesium treated maize.

    Abstract Maize plants infected with Spiroplasma kunkelii show symptoms similar to that of plants in a magnesium-deficient soil, and it has been shown that the spiroplasma alters the plants’ magnesium absorption. In the current study we compared changes associated to either spiroplasma infection, two soil magnesium levels and their combinations. Plant symptoms were recorded and correlated with transmission electron microscopy observations. Plants grown on a high magnesium treatment showed no macroscopical alterations nor organelle ultrastructural alterations, while plants on a low magnesium treatment showed macroscopical vein yellowing and, ultrastructurally, they had most chloroplasts and mitochondrial membranes altered.     Abstract Nonspecific acid phosphatases are a group of enzymes whose activity increases the availability of exogenous and endogenous orthophosphate either through extra- or intracellular hydrolysis of phosphate compounds. Our study demonstrates the activity of acid phosphatases in the filamentous freshwater alga Stigeoclonium tenue. These enzymes were detected following a cerium-based method in which cerium was used as an orthophosphate-capture reagent. In thalli from S. tenue from the natural environment, acid phosphatases were found in the longitudinal cell wall, plasmalemma, and vacuole.     Abstract Under acid soil conditions, solubility of aluminum (Al) increases leading to toxicity for plants. Al accumulator species such as tea, however, accumulate high levels of Al in tissues without toxicity symptoms. In this work, Al localization and compartmentation were studied in tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] grown hydroponically at 0 or 100 µM Al for eight weeks. Plant dry matter production was significantly higher in the presence of Al and accumulated up to 1.21 and 6.18 mg Al/g DW in the leaves and roots, respectively. In Argentina, there exists the sweet potato chlorotic dwarf (SPCD), a sweet potato disease caused by triple co-infection with SPCSV, SPFMV and sweet potato mild speckling virus(SPMSV).     Abstract Advanced array processing approaches require accurate knowledge of the location of individual element in a sensor array. Most array shape estimation methods require the directions of sources. In this paper, an array shape estimation method based on eigen-decomposition is presented. The directions of sources do not need to be considered in advance and optimal array shape is generated through a series of iterations. To further improve the accuracy of this algorithm, a partitioned eigenstructure method is introduced.     Abstract A common sample geometry used to study shear localization is the "tophat": an axi-symmetric sample with an upper "hat" portion and a lower "brim" portion. The gage section lies between the hat and brim. The gage section length is on the order of 0.9 mm with deformation imposed through a Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system at maximum top-to-bottom velocity in the range of 10-25 m/sec.     Deformation and Failure of Single-Packets in Martensitic Steels

    Abstract A three-dimensional multiple-slip dislocation-density-based crystalline formulation, and specialized finite-element formulations were used to investigate dislocation-density evolution and crack behavior in single-packet lath martensite in high strength martensitic steels. The formulation is based on accounting for variant morphologies and orientations, and initial dislocations-densities that are uniquely inherent to martensitic microstructures. The effects of loading plane with respect to the orientation o the habit plane are investigated.     Abstract In this paper, an automatic finite element remeshing algorithm based on the bubble packing method is utilized for the purpose of numerical simulations of localized damage, because fine meshes are needed to represent the gradually concentrated damage. The bubble packing method introduces two parameters that easily control the remeshing criterion and the new mesh size.
