Active Metamaterials for Modulation and Detection

    Sameer R. Sonkusale1, Wangren Xu1, Saroj Rout1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 301-315, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.301

Abstract This paper illustrates some new concepts in the area of hybrid metamaterials, which are metamaterials that are embedded with active circuit elements such as transistors. Such transistor/metamaterial hybrids can exhibit some exotic electromagnetic properties which can be exploited for unusual and exciting functions. Two specific examples are provided. In one application, terahertz (THz) modulator based on embedding of psuedomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) within the metamaterial resonator, all implemented monolithically in a commercial gallium arsenide (GaAs) technology is presented. In another application, a detector array based on metamaterial perfect absorber for room-temperature detection of gigahertz (GHz) radiation within each… More >

From Geometric Transformations to Auxetic Metamaterials

    Ligia Munteanu1, Veturia Chiroiu1, Viorel Şerban2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.42, No.3, pp. 175-204, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.042.175

Abstract The paper introduces a new alternative towards fabrication of auxetic metamaterials (materials with negative Poisson’s ratio) controlled by geometric transformations. These transformations are derived from the theory of small (infinitesimal) elastic deformation superimposed on finite elastic deformations. By using this theory, a cylindrical region filled with initial deformed foam is transformed through deformation into a cylindrical shell region filled with auxetic metamaterial. As an example, the realization of the seismic cloak device becomes a practical possibility. More >

Characteristics of a Single I-shaped Slitted Zeroth-Order Resonance Mushroom Antenna based on Metamaterials

    Cherl-Hee Lee, Jonghun Lee1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 289-299, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.289

Abstract The broadband design of a metamaterials-based zeroth-order resonance (ZOR) mushroom antenna with an I-shaped slit is presented and experimentally studied. The presented metamaterials-based antenna uses a unit cell based on a composite right/left handed (CRLH) transmission line and can provide a ZOR frequency. By designing the I-shaped slot resonance frequency adjacently to the ZOR frequency, the presented antenna can achieve a 10-dB bandwidth enhancement of roughly 7 times with respect to a conventional rectangular-shaped mushroom structure. Some Applications of Metamaterial Resonators Based on Symmetry Properties

    J. Naqui1, F. Martín1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 267-288, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.267

Abstract Metamaterial resonators are electrically small resonant particles useful for the implementation of effective media metamaterials. In this paper, some applications of metamaterial resonators (such as the split ring resonator -SRR-, the complementary split ring resonator -CSRR-, the folded stepped impedance resonator -SIR-, and the electric LC resonator), that exploit the symmetry properties of transmission lines loaded with such symmetric particles, are reviewed. This covers differential (balanced) lines with common mode suppression, linear and angular displacement sensors (including alignment sensors), angular velocity sensors, and radiofrequency barcodes. Advantages and drawbacks as compared to existing implementations are also discussed. More >

    Shiv Narayan1, Latha S.1 and R M Jha1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 217-230, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.217

Abstract The EM analysis of multi-layered metamaterial based radar absorbing structure (RAS) with dual-band characteristics in millimeter wave frequency regime has been carried out in this paper using transmission line transfer matrix (TLTM) method for TE and TM polarizations. The proposed metamaterial-based RAS exhibits dual-band characteristics at centre frequencies 120 GHz and 175 GHz with very low power reflection. It absorbs more than 90% power of incidence wave over the frequency range from 111-131 GHz at first resonance and from 164.5-185 GHz at second resonance without metal backing plate, which is desirable for stealth applications. It also showed very low (<… More >

    Balamati Choudhury1, Sanjana Bisoyi1, Pavani Vijay Reddy1, Manjula S.1 and R. M. Jha1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 179-215, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.179

Abstract The terahertz spectrum of electromagnetic waves is finding its position in various applications of day to day life because of its unique properties, including the penetration through opaque materials. Naturally occurring materials in this range are rare due to the display of a natural breakpoint of both electric, and magnetic resonances in these materials. However recent advances in artificially engineered materials, which show resonance in this region are able to harness desirable properties in the terahertz region. In this paper, terahertz design and fabrication issues have been explored along with their applications. A brief review of metamaterial terahertz applications has… More >

Soft Computing for Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber Design for Biomedical Application

    Balamati Choudhury1, Pavani Vijay Reddy1, Sanjana Bisoyi1, R. M. Jha1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.37, No.3, pp. 135-146, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.037.135

Abstract The terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum plays a vital role in biomedical imaging because of its sensitivity to vibrational modes of biomolecules. Advances in broadband terahertz imaging have been emerging in the field of biomedical spectroscopy. Biomedical imaging is used to distinguish between the infected (cancer) and the non-infected tissue, which requires broad band and highly efficient radar absorbing material (RAM) designs (to obtain high resolution image of the tissue). In this paper, a metamaterial broadband RAM design is proposed towards biomedical spectroscopy applications in the THz region. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used for the design… More >

    Shiv Narayan1, R M Jha1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.37, No.2, pp. 97-108, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.037.097

Abstract A novel metamaterial based FSS (frequency selective surfaces) structure is presented in this paper for wideband airborne radome applications. The proposed metamaterial-FSS structure consists of three layers, where a DPS (double positive sign) layer is sandwiched between a MNG (μ-negative) and ENG (ε- negative) layer, exhibits very good bandpass characteristics inside the operational band along with excellent roll-off characteristics outside the band. The EM performance analysis of the proposed structure has been carried out using transmission line transfer matrix (TLTM) method, which shows excellent bandpass characteristics over a wide frequency range. The transmission efficiency is over 95% both at normal… More >

    Balamati Choudhury1, R. M. Jha1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.33, No.3, pp. 275-308, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.033.275

Abstract The exciting features of metamaterial in conjunction with transformation optics leads to various applications in the microwave regime with such examples as invisible cloak, frequency selective surfaces (FSS), radomes, etc. The concept of electromagnetic invisibility is very much important in aerospace platform. Hence to study the feasibility of implementation of this concept for stealth, an extensive literature survey of metamaterial cloaks has been carried out and reported in this paper along with the basic concept of cloaking. To make the review more effective, the technical papers are classified into three broad sections viz. mathematical modeling, design and simulations, and fabrications… More >
