    ABSTRACT

Numerical Simulations on Piezoresistivity of CNT/Polymer Based Nanocomposites

    Alamusi, Yaolu Liu, Ning Hu

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 57-58, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.016.057

Abstract In this work, we propose a 3 dimensional (3D) numerical model to predict the piezoresistivity behaviours of a nanocomposite material made from an insulating polymer filled by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This material is very hopeful for its application in highly sensitive strain sensor by measuring its piezoresistivity, i.e., the ratio of resistance change versus applied strain. In this numerical approach, a 3D resistor network model is firstly proposed to predict the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposite with a large amount of randomly dispersed CNTs under the zero strain state. By focusing on the fact that the piezoresistivity of the nanocomposite… More >

Numerical Simulations of Unstable Flow through a Spherical Bulge in a 90-degree Asymmetrical Bend

    J.M.M. Sousa1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 211-220, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.009.211

Abstract Time-dependent numerical simulations of the flow through a spherical bulge in a 90-degree asymmetrical bend have been performed for Reynolds numbers in the range 100-400. The present results have demonstrated that the flow reaches asymptotically steady, symmetrical solutions for Reynolds numbers up to 300, whereas a value of 400 for this parameter leads to unsteadiness. The computed flow behavior at this higher Reynolds number has shown to be characterized by an intermittent transition between small-amplitude, irregular oscillations and large-amplitude bursts occurring at a low frequency. In addition, the unsteady flow was asymmetrical and exhibited swirl switching. More >

Numerical Simulations of Pulsatile Flow in an End-to-Side Anastomosis Model

    E. Shaik, K.A. Hoffmann, J-F. Dietiker

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 41-54, 2007, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2007.004.041

Abstract A potential interaction between the local hemodynamics and the artery wall response has been suggested for vascular graft failure by intimal hyperplasia (IH). Among the various hemodynamic factors, wall shear stress has been implicated as the primary factor responsible for the development of IH. In order to explore the role of hemodynamics in the formation of IH in end-to-side anastomosis, computational fluid dynamics is employed. To validate the numerical simulations, comparisons with existing experimental data are performed for both steady and pulsatile flows. Generally, good agreement is observed with the velocity profiles whereas some discrepancies are found in wall shear… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.118, No.1, pp. 139-155, 2019, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2019.04596

Abstract Damage and threats to hydraulic and submarine structures by underwater explosions (UNDEXs) have raised much attention. The centrifuge model test, compared to prototype test, is a more promising way to examine the problem while reducing cost and satisfying the similitude requirements of both Mach and Froude numbers simultaneously. This study used a systematic approach employing centrifuge model tests and numerical simulations to investigate the effects of UNDEXs on an air-backed steel plate. Nineteen methodical centrifuge tests of UNDEXs were conducted. The shock wave pressure, bubble oscillation pressure, acceleration and the strain of the air-backed steel plate were recorded and compared… More >

A New Efficient Matrix Algorithm for a 3D Component Mode Synthesis (CMS) Model Used on Sound Transmission Problems

    M. D. C. Magalhaes1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.105, No.6, pp. 441-465, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.105.441

Abstract The main goal of this study is to present an alternative and more efficient algorithm for a three-dimensional Component Mode Synthesis model to be used on sound transmission problems. The influence of fluid-structure interaction on airborne sound transmission problems is analysed using this model, which is based on simple volume geometries. In principle, the same procedure can also be applied when the component modes are obtained from alternative numerical techniques. The modal behaviour of acoustic volumes and a partition is implemented in two steps. The novelty of this alternative model is that the structural modes are incorporated on the acoustic… More >

Axisymmetric and 3-D Numerical Simulations of the Effects of a Static Magnetic Field on Dissolution of Silicon into Germanium

    F. Mechighel1,2,3, N. Armour4, S. Dost4, M. Kadja3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.97, No.1, pp. 53-80, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.097.053

Abstract Numerical simulations were carried out to explain the behavior exhibited in experimental work on the dissolution process of silicon into a germanium melt. The experimental work utilized a material configuration similar to that used in the Liquid Phase Diffusion (LPD) and Melt-Replenishment Czochralski (Cz) growth systems. The experimental dissolution system was modeled by considering axisymmetric and three-dimensional (3-D) domains. In both cases, the governing equations, namely conservation of mass, momentum balance, energy balance, and solute transport balance, were solved using the Finite Element Method.
Measured concentration profiles and dissolution heights from the experiment samples showed that the application of a… More >

    S. Saha Ray1, A. K. Gupta2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.103, No.5, pp. 315-341, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.103.315

Abstract In this paper, an efficient numerical schemes based on the Haar wavelet method are applied for finding numerical solution of nonlinear third-order modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation as well as modified Burgers' equations. The numerical results are then compared with the exact solutions. The accuracy of the obtained solutions is quite high even if the number of calculation points is small. More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.94, No.4, pp. 331-369, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.094.331

Abstract In the present paper the Generalized Differential Quadrature Finite Element Method (GDQFEM) is applied to deal with the static analysis of plane state structures with generic through the thickness material discontinuities and holes of various shapes. The GDQFEM numerical technique is an extension of the Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) method and is based on the idea of conventional integral quadrature. In particular, the GDQFEM results in terms of stresses and displacements for classical and advanced plane stress problems with discontinuities are compared to the ones by the Cell Method (CM) and Finite Element Method (FEM). The multi-domain technique is implemented… More >

On the Use of PEBI Grids in the Numerical Simulations of Two-Phase Flows in Fractured Horizontal Wells

    Yongsheng An1, Xiaodong Wu1, Deli Gao1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.89, No.2, pp. 123-142, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.089.123

Abstract The accuracy of numerical simulation of a two-phase (oil and water) flow in a fractured horizontal well depends greatly upon the types of grids used in the computation. Cartesian grids have been widely used in recent years, but they have some disadvantages in describing complex structural wells, such as fractured horizontal wells. For example, Cartesian grids are not efficient in describing the main wellbores and the fractures of fractured horizontal wells, and the results can frequently suffer from grid orientation effects, even though a grid-refinement is often introduced to enhance the adaptability of a Cartesian grid. The PEBI (Perpendicular Bisector)… More >
