Data-Driven Enhanced Combined Finite-Discrete Element Method for Simulating Rock Failure Progress

    Ruifeng Zhao1, Zhijun Wu1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 1-2, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09814

Abstract The combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) can effectively simulate the continuousdiscontinuous failure process of rocks, and is now widely adopted to investigate the issues related to rock mechanics and engineering. The conventional FDEM requires pre-defines constitutive models to calculate the element stress from element deformations [1]. However, the constitutive model used in conventional FDEM is obtained by empirical fitting of rock mechanics test data, and large amount of rock physical and mechanical information present in the test data, such as the nonlinear properties of rock presented in the initial compaction stage, are lost in the process of fitting test data… More >

Rockburst Intensity Grade Prediction Model Based on Batch Gradient Descent and Multi-Scale Residual Deep Neural Network

    Yu Zhang1,2,3, Mingkui Zhang1,2,*, Jitao Li1,2, Guangshu Chen1,2

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.47, No.2, pp. 1987-2006, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.040381

Abstract Rockburst is a phenomenon in which free surfaces are formed during excavation, which subsequently causes the sudden release of energy in the construction of mines and tunnels. Light rockburst only peels off rock slices without ejection, while severe rockburst causes casualties and property loss. The frequency and degree of rockburst damage increases with the excavation depth. Moreover, rockburst is the leading engineering geological hazard in the excavation process, and thus the prediction of its intensity grade is of great significance to the development of geotechnical engineering. Therefore, the prediction of rockburst intensity grade is one problem that needs to be… More >

EFFECT OF ASPECT RATIO ON SUPERCRITICAL HEAT TRANSFER OF CRYOGENIC METHANE IN ROCKET ENGINE COOLING CHANNELS

    M. Arun, J. Akhil, K. Noufal, Robin Baby, Darshitha Babu, M. Jose Prakash*

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-9, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.23

Abstract The supercritical turbulent flow of cryogenic methane flowing in a rocket engine cooing channel is numerically analysed by imposing constant heat flux at the bottom surface of the channel. The calculation scheme is validated by comparing the results obtained with experimental results reported in literature. The heat transfer coefficient is influenced by the strong variation in thermophysical properties of methane at super critical pressure. An increasing trend in the average value of Nusselt number is observed with aspect ratio. The efficacy of both Modified Jackson and Hall and Bishop empirical correlations in predicting Nusselt number is tested for cryogenic methane… More >

HEAT TRANSFER DETERIORATION EFFECTS OF CRYOGENIC METHANE IN ROCKET ENGINE COOLING CHANNELS

    M. Aruna,*, M. Jose Prakashb

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.11, pp. 1-10, 2018, DOI:10.5098/hmt.11.9

Abstract Prediction of heat transfer deterioration in rocket engine coolant channels with supercritical flow is essential while designing high pressure rocket engines. Three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer of cryogenic methane in rectangular engine cooling channels at supercritical pressures with asymmetric heating imposed on the bottom channel surface is numerically investigated, focusing on the effects of key parameters such as aspect ratio, heat flux and coolant pressure. Due to the similarity of the coolant channel with that of an actual rocket engine, the results obtained herein are beneficial for the design and optimization of rocket engine cooling systems. Heat flux is varied from… More >

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 209-224, 2023, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2022.021257

Abstract Damage is one of the most important characteristics of rock failure. Studying the damage mechanism of rock blasting under the guiding effect of the water jet slot and revealing the mechanism of controlled blasting with water jet assistance are crucial. In this study, a rock-like material was chosen as the research object for the calibration experiment of the numerical model. The numerical simulation models were then established by ANSYS/LS-DYNA, and the blast-induced damage mechanism under the guiding effect of the water jet slot was analyzed according to the blasting theory. The results indicated that explosive energy accumulates toward the direction… More > Graphic Abstract

Investigation on the Long Term Operational Stability of Underground Energy Storage in Salt Rock

    Jun Zhou1,*, Shijie Fang1, Jinghong Peng1, Qing Li2, Guangchuan Liang1,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.1, pp. 221-243, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.020317

Abstract Underground energy storage is an important function of all energy supply systems, and especially concerning the seemingly eternal imbalance between production and demand. Salt rock underground energy storage, for one, is widely applied in both traditional and renewable energy fields; and this particular technique can be used to store natural gas, hydrogen, and compressed air. However, resource diversification and structural complexity make the supply system increasingly uncertain with the passing years, leading to great challenges for energy storage facilities in the present, and perhaps going into the future as well. Hence, it is necessary to research the operation stability of… More >

Ch. Venkat Ramana*, Niranjan Ramchandra Thote, Arun Kumar Singh

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 1205-1214, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.031838

Abstract The tension cracks and joints in rock or soil slopes affect their failure stability. Prediction of rock or soil slope failure is one of the most challenging tasks in the earth sciences. The actual slopes consist of inhomogeneous materials, complex morphology, and erratic joints. Most studies concerning the failure of rock slopes primarily focused on determining Factor of Safety (FoS) and Critical Slip Surface (CSS). In this article, the effect of inclined tension crack on a rock slope failure is studied numerically with Shear Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) method. An inclined Tension Crack (TC) influences the magnitude and location of… More >

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.92, No.1, pp. 131-147, 2023, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.021919

Abstract Gray blight disease (GBD) causes significant losses in tea production in China. Although genes and biological processes involved in resistance to fungal disease in tea plants have been identified, specific mechanisms of the GBD infection process remain unknown. In this study, morphological and multi-gene (TEF-TUB-ITS) phylogenetic characteristics were used to identify isolate CLBB1 of Pseudopestalotiopsis vietnamensis. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that isolate CLBB1 from tea leaves caused GBD in the susceptible tea cultivar Wuyi Rock (Camellia sinensis var. sinensis cv. Shuixian). Spores began to germinate 24 h after infection (hai), and after 48 h, elongated fungal hyphae formed from a single conidium. Transcriptome… More >

Abstract The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of rock is an essential property of rock material in different relevant applications, such as rock slope, tunnel construction, and foundation. It takes enormous time and effort to obtain the UCS values directly in the laboratory. Accordingly, an indirect determination of UCS through conducting several rock index tests that are easy and fast to carry out is of interest and importance. This study presents powerful boosting trees evaluation framework, i.e., adaptive boosting machine, extreme gradient boosting machine (XGBoost), and category gradient boosting machine, for estimating the UCS of sandstone.
