    Is Poa spiciformis tolerant to defoliation? Defoliation effects on its productive performance

    Abstract In plants, compensatory growth takes place when the positive effects of defoliation compensate the negative ones, and defoliated plants show a similar or increased production in relation to non-defoliated plants. Our objective was to evaluate the ability to compensate defoliation of Poa spiciformis, a forage perennial tussock grass in southern Patagonia (Argentina). The experiment was performed in potted plants that grew under controlled conditions of watering and fertilization.     Abstract We studied the growth habit and root anatomy on two species of the Macroptilium genera, Fabaceae. These species, potential forages, are native to the Northwest Provinces in Argentina. The aims of this paper were to determine the survival capacity of the study species relating its growth habit and persistence with morphological and anatomical features.     Abstract We performed the inoculation of transgenic cotton seedlings with Trichoderma sp. strain ICA 4 to evaluate its effects on the physiological development of seedlings. Inoculated seedlings of transgenic cotton had higher development than non-inoculated seedlings. The range of values for relative growth, doubling time, height and number of leaves (0.04 g/g d; 16.88 days; 17.16 cm and 4.2, respectively) were significantly higher that those observed in non-inoculated plants (0.03 g/g day; 24.38 days; 12.33 cm and 2.6, respectively).     Comparison of photosynthetic and morphological characteristics, and microstructure of roots and shoots, between columnar apple and standard apple trees of hybrid seedlings

    Abstract The photosynthetic and morphological characteristics, and microstructure of roots and shoots, were studied between columnar apple and standard apple trees derived from the crosses of ‘Fuji’ × ‘Telamon’ and ‘Gala’ × ‘Telamon’. The results showed that chlorophyll A, chlorophyll B, the content of chlorophyll A+B, and leaf area index were higher in columnar apple trees than in standard apple trees. In a day cycle, the net photosynthetic (Pn) and transpiration rates (Tr) were higher in the columnar apple trees than in standard apple trees.     Abstract The Dahlia variabilis Wild (Desf.) is considered the Mexican national flower and their exploitation is mainly for ornamental purposes.     Abstract Robinia pseudoacacia (locust hereafter) is an ornamental tree with various uses. Both homologous tetraploid (tetraploid hereafter) and diploid cultivars are commercially available. The tetraploids have advantageous traits, but poor germinability, and cuttings are difficult to root. Since auxin applications can promote rooting, we evaluated the effects of dipping cuttings in various indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) concentrations for four hours on rooting parameters. IBA significantly affected all measured parameters of both tetraploid and diploids cuttings. Tetraploid cuttings produced no roots without IBA.     Defoliation frequency affects morphophysiological traits in the bunchgrass Poa ligularis

    Abstract Poa ligularis is an important forage in Patagonian rangelands. Populations of this perennial bunchgrass have been severely affected by overgrazing. We propose that increased defoliation frequencies will decrease (1) aerial- and belowground dry matter production, (2) root survival, and (3) concentration and content of total non-structural crown + root carbohydrates, and (4) increase root mortality.     Abstract Seedling growth and development of Seriphidium quettense were examined under water stress (WS) and non-water stress (NWS) conditions. Seedlings were grown in pots to investigate their response to NWS conditions. Impact of WS on seedling growth was assessed in pre-existing plants grown under a semi-arid, natural environment.
