Parallel Node-based Local Tetrahedral Mesh Generation

    Y.F. Nie, Y.Q. Li, L. Wang

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.83, No.6, pp. 575-598, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.083.575

Abstract In this paper, we introduce the parallel Node-based Local FEM (NLFEM)-a novel version of FEM with natural parallel performances and adaptivity to various complex parallel environments. As a crucial part of 3D NLFEM, the Node-based Local Tetrahedron Mesh Generation (NLTMG) algorithm is presented, where guaranteeing the global conformity of local meshes is a strategy of ensuring the validity of the NLFEM and decoupling the NLFEM. In order to generate conforming local mesh, we search the neighbor nodes by the neighborhood of a corresponding multilevel bucket and then those nodes are Delaunay tetrahedralized by the TetGen. Accordingly, we prove that the… More >

The Reproducing Kernel DMS-FEM: 3D Shape Functions and Applications to Linear Solid Mechanics

    Sunilkumar N1, D Roy1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.66, No.3, pp. 249-284, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.066.249

Abstract We propose a family of 3D versions of a smooth finite element method (Sunilkumar and Roy 2010), wherein the globally smooth shape functions are derivable through the condition of polynomial reproduction with the tetrahedral B-splines (DMS-splines) or tensor-product forms of triangular B-splines and 1D NURBS bases acting as the kernel functions. While the domain decomposition is accomplished through tetrahedral or triangular prism elements, an additional requirement here is an appropriate generation of knotclouds around the element vertices or corners. The possibility of sensitive dependence of numerical solutions to the placements of knotclouds is largely arrested by enforcing the condition of… More >

    Yongjie Zhang1, Wenyan Wang1, Xinghua Liang1, Yuri Bazilevs2, Ming-Chen Hsu2, Trond Kvamsdal3, Reidar Brekken4, Jørgen Isaksen5

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.42, No.2, pp. 131-150, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.042.131

Abstract This paper describes a comprehensive and high-fidelity finite element meshing approach for patient-specific arterial geometries from medical imaging data, with emphasis on cerebral aneurysm configurations. The meshes contain both the blood volume and solid arterial wall, and are compatible at the fluid-solid interface. There are four main stages for this meshing method: 1) Image segmentation and geometric model construction; 2) Tetrahedral mesh generation for the fluid volume using the octree-based method; 3) Mesh quality improvement stage, in which edge-contraction, pillowing, optimization, geometric flow smoothing, and mesh cutting are applied to the fluid mesh; and 4) Mesh generation for the blood… More >

A Virtual Crack Closure-Integral Method (VCCM) for Three-Dimensional Crack Problems Using Linear Tetrahedral Finite Elements

    H. Okada 1, T. Kamibeppu 1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.10, No.3, pp. 229-238, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.010.229

Abstract In this paper, a three-dimensional VCCM (Virtual Crack Closure-Integral Method) for evaluating the energy release rate and the stress intensity factor is presented. Many engineers and researchers believe that hexahedral finite elements should be used to perform three-dimensional fracture analyses. Previous VCCM formulations assume the use of hexahedral finite elements. In present study, the authors have been developing a VCCM that works with tetrahedral finite elements. In the field of large-scale computation, the use of tetrahedral finite elements has becoming very popular as high performance mesh generation programs became available. Therefore, building a large and complex analysis model with hexahedral… More >

Computer Simulation of Fundamental Behaviors of Point Defects, Clusters and Interaction with Dislocations in Fe and Ni

    E. Kuramoto, K. Ohsawa, T. Tsutsumi1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.3, No.2, pp. 193-200, 2002, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2002.003.193

Abstract In order to investigate the interaction of point defects with a dislocation, an interstitial cluster or a SFT (stacking fault tetrahedron), computer simulation has been carried out in model Fe and Ni crystals. The capture zone (the region where the interaction energy is larger than kT) was determined for various interactions. Calculated capture zone for T =500°C for SIAs (crowdion and dumbbell) around a straight edge dislocation is larger than that for a vacancy in both Fe and Ni. Capture zones for Ni are larger than those for Fe, suggesting that Ni (fcc) has a larger dislocation bias factor than… More >

Analytical Treatment of the Isotropic and Tetragonal Lattice Green Functions for the Face-centered Cubic, Body-centered Cubic and Simple Cubic Lattices

    B.A. Mamedov1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.43, No.2, pp. 87-96, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.043.087

Abstract In this paper, we propose an efficient method to calculate the isotropic and tetragonal lattice Green functions for the face-centered cubic (FCC), bodycentered cubic (BCC) and simple cubic (SC) lattices. The method is based on binomial expansion theorems, which provide us with analytical formulae through basic integrals. The resulting series present better convergence rates. Several acceleration techniques are combined to further improve the efficiency of the established formulas. The obtained results for the lattice Green functions are in good agreement with the known numerical calculation results. More >
