Antibacterial activity of Falkenbergia hillebrandii (Born) from the Indian coast against human pathogens

    Manilal1 A, S Sujith2, J Selvin3, C Shakir4, G Seghal Kiran5

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.78, pp. 161-166, 2009, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2009.78.161

Abstract The antibacterial property of the red algae, Falkenbergia hillebrandii (Born) collected from the southwest coast of India (Indian Ocean) was evaluated against three multidrug resistant human pathogens. Four different solvents: ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, methanol and phosphate buffer saline (PBS) were used with this purpose. Dried samples extracted with methanol showed broadest and highest antimicrobial activity when compared to other solvents. However, PBS extract showed no antibacterial activity. The highly active compounds red alga, F. hillebrandii were fractionated and purified using different chromatographic systems, including reverse phase HPLC and GCMS. The analysis revealed that the most abundant metabolite was the oleic… More >

Hydrothermal preparation of TiO2-Ag nanoparticles and its antimicrobial performance against human pathogenic microbial cells in water

    Mahmoud MOUSTAFA1, 2, Saad ALAMRI1, Mohamed ELNOUBY3, Tarek TAHA4, M. A. ABU-SAIED5, Ali SHATI1, Mohamed AL-KAHTANI1, Sulaiman ALRUMMAN1

    BIOCELL, Vol.42, No.3, pp. 93-98, 2018, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2018.07014

Abstract Water contaminated with pathogenic microbes is considered as one of the most common routes for transmitting diseases in human beings. Different methods have been applied for the decontamination of microbes in contaminated water. In the current study, an easy to do hydrothermal method has been used for the preparation of TiO2-Ag nanoparticles. The obtained material was characterised using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphological appearance of the obtained nanoparticles was in the shape of a sphere with a size range of 60-90 nm. The antimicrobial activity of the prepared nanoparticles was tested against… More >

Ultrasound-Assisted Synthesis of Sucrose and Fructooligosaccharides Esters as Bio-Plasticizers

    Dragomir Vassilev1*, Nadezhda Petkova2, Milena Koleva1, Panteley Denev2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 24-30, 2016, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2015.634125

Abstract This article presents the results obtained by the ultrasound-assisted synthesis of sucrose and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) esters with fatty acids (palmitic and 10-undecylenic), the identifi cation of the products and the study of their possible application as plasticizers in plastics processing. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C NMR) spectroscopy were used to identify the synthesized carbohydrate esters. The plasticizing effect of the sucrose palmitate applied in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was evaluated by the glass transition temperatures; the decrease of the Tg with the increase of the ester content could be accepted as confi rmation of… More >
