Road Performance, Thermal Conductivity, and Temperature Distribution of Steel Slag Rubber Asphalt Surface Layer

Zhiqiang Shu, Jianmin Wu*, Shaoqing Li, Bingbing Zhang, Jianqi Yang

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 365-380, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.014379

Abstract The use of steel slag, which is a by-product of the steel manufacture, in the construction of asphalt pavement would contribute to waste reduction and environment protection. Using rubber asphalt at the same time can improve the performance of asphalt mixture. This study investigates the influence of steel slag content on the road performance, thermal conductivity and outdoor temperature distribution of steel slag rubber asphalt mixtures (SSRAM), and calculates the cumulative stress in surface layer. At a certain range of concentration, the steel slag additive improved the deformation resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance of the mixtures. The SSRAM with 40%… More >

Analysis of the Mechanism and Effectiveness of Lignin in Improving the High-Temperature Thermal Stability of Asphalt

    Cheng Cheng1,2,*, Weiwei Sun2, Bo Hu3, Guixiang Tao2, Chao Peng2, Yanjuan Tian4, Shujuan Wu4,5

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.10, pp. 1243-1255, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.012054

Abstract The use of lignin, which is a by-product of the pulp and paper industry, in the development of asphalt binders would contribute to waste reduction, providing environmental, economic, and social benefits. In this study, samples of lignin-modified asphalt binder samples with different content of lignin (3%, 6%, 9%, 12%, and 15%) and unmodified asphalt (control) were tested using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), and thermogravimetry. The mechanism and effectiveness of lignin in improving the thermal stability of asphalt at high temperatures were analyzed. The FTIR analysis shows that no new characteristic absorption peak is seen in… More >

Developing a Durable Quiet Road Surface

    Matthew Muirhead, Iswandaru Widyatmoko

    Sound & Vibration, Vol.52, No.3, pp. 2-5, 2018, DOI:10.32604/sv.2018.03846

Abstract Road traffic noise can have a significant impact on the quality of life for residents close to major road networks. One of the most effective measures for reducing the noise from road traffic, particularly on high-speed roads, is to ensure the use of a low noise road surface. Research on pavement construction and the measurement of its acoustic properties has shown that significant noise reductions can be achieved through the use of certain road surface types. However certain low noise road surfaces do not exhibit the desired durability associated with more traditional pavements, leading to costly and disruptive maintenance regimes.

Simulation of Mastic Erosion from Open-Graded Asphalt Mixes Using a Hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian Finite Element Approach

    N.Kringos1, A.Scarpas1, A.P.S. Selvadurai2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.28, No.3, pp. 147-160, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.028.147

Abstract This paper presents a numerical approach for the modeling of water flow induced mastic erosion from a permeable asphalt mix and is part of an ongoing effort to model moisture-induced damage in asphalt mixes. Due to the complex composite structure of asphalt mixtures, moisture can infiltrate in various ways into the components and have an adverse effect on its mechanical performance. Depending on the gradation of the asphalt aggregates and the mixing procedure, asphalt structures with a variable permeability may result. Open-graded asphalt mixes are designed with a high interconnected air void content to serve as a drainage layer on… More >

Electro-Deposition of Asphaltenes from Abu Dhabi Crude Oil/Synthetic Formation Water Mixtures

    Hadil Abu Khalifeh1, Hadi Belhaj2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.12, No.3, pp. 124-135, 2016, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2016.012.124

Abstract In this work, asphaltenes precipitation and deposition induced by applying an electric field to Abu Dhabi crude oil sample were studied. The asphaltic particle electrical charge and asphaltic deposits mass at different operating conditions were determined. Direct current (DC) was applied between two graphite electrodes dipped in crude oil/synthetic formation water mixture of 240K ppm salinity. Three current densities of 10, 20, and 30 A/m2 were applied. Deposits were collected on the electrodes surfaces and their mass was recorded using low capacity load cells (up to 50g). Anodic and cathodic deposits were observed at different operating conditions. The results revealed… More >

Predicting The Onset of Asphaltene Precipitation by Virial EOS

    S. Sabbaghi1, M. Shariaty-Niassar2, Sh. Ayatollahi1, A. Jahanmiri1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 113-124, 2008, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2008.004.113

Abstract In this study, the Onset of Asphaltene Precipitation is predicted by a modified Virial equation of state. The bases of quantum mechanics and statistical thermodynamics are used to evaluate the potential energy and intermolecular forces related to asphaltene molecules. The Virial equation of state is modified using group-contribution-methods for asphaltenes, which are assumed to be polymeric-like compounds consisting of aggregates of monodisperse asphaltene monomers. It is shown how the modified Virial equation of state with the Peneloux correction leads to estimate the molar volume and solubility parameter. These parameters are also compared successfully with results provided by the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation… More >
