Facet-facet barriers on Cu{111} surfaces for Cu dimers

    Alberto M. Coronado1, Hanchen Huang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.10, No.1, pp. 39-44, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.010.039

Abstract Nanostructure fabrication or surface processing in general is predominantly kinetics-limited. One of the kinetics factors is surface diffusion, which involves intricate interplay between the diffusing atoms and substrate atoms. On Cu{111} surfaces, both adatoms and dimers diffuse very fast. Recent studies have shown that adatoms encounter a large facet-facet barrier, even though their conventional Ehrlich-Schwoebel barriers are small. This work examines the facet-facet diffusion barriers of dimers. Our results show that a dimer prefers diffusion through atom-by-atom mechanism, having a barrier of 0.52 eV from {111} to {111} facet and a barrier of 0.55 eV from {111} to {100} facet.… More >

Modeling and Numerical Computation of Necking in Round Bars Using a Total Lagrangian Elastoplastic Formulation

    A. Le van1, P. Le Grognec1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 63-72, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.063

Abstract Necking is a bifurcation phenomenon observed in round bars under tensile loading and has been investigated in numbers of papers. In the present work, it is modeled within the framework of finite rate-independent plasticity. The theory is based on thermodynamic foundations developed for standard materials and results in a total Lagrangian formulation for finite plasticity, where the total strain is decomposed additively according to [Green and Nagdhi 1965)] and the hardening is characterized by a nonlinear isotropic hardening law of the saturation type.
The discretization and consistent linearization of the elastic-plastic equation set using the standard finite element procedure… More >

Numerical Simulation of CZ Crystal Growth of Oxide

    T. Tsukada1, M. Kobayashi2, C. J. Jing3, N. Imaishi4

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 45-62, 2005, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2005.001.045

Abstract In this paper, our recent numerical studies on the Czochralski (CZ) crystal growth of oxide are surveyed. In the first part of the analysis, a "global" heat transfer model for an inductively heated CZ furnace is introduced and depicted in detail. It is emphasized that accounting for the internal radiation within the crystal and/or melt is of crucial importance since they are often semitransparent to infrared radiation. Results coming from such a "global" approach suggest that the melt/crystal interface shape is strongly affected by the optical properties of the crystal, of the melt and by the melt convection. The second… More >

Elastic Torsion Bar with Arbitrary Cross-Section Using the Fredholm Integral Equations

    Chein-Shan Liu1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 31-42, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.005.031

Abstract By using a meshless regularized integral equation method (MRIEM), the solution of elastic torsion problem of a uniform bar with arbitrary cross-section is presented by the first kind Fredholm integral equation on an artificial circle, which just encloses the bar's cross-section. The termwise separable property of kernel function allows us to obtain the semi-analytical solutions of conjugate warping function and shear stresses. A criterion is used to select the regularized parameter according to the minimum principle of Laplace equation. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the new method in providing very accurate numerical solutions as compared with the exact ones. More >

Leveraging Logical Anchor into Topology Optimization for Indoor Wireless Fingerprinting

    Lin Wang1,*, Huixiang Liu1, Wenyuan Liu1,2, Nan Jing1, Ahmad Adnan1, Chenshu Wu3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.58, No.2, pp. 437-449, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.03814

Abstract The indoor subarea localization has wide application space in dynamic hot zone identification, indoor layout optimization, store dynamic pricing and crowd flow trend prediction. The ubiquitous mobile devices provide the opportunity for wireless fingerprinting-based indoor localization services. However, there are two short board where the existing methods have been criticized. One is that a tagging approach requires a large number of professional surveys for wireless fingerprint construction, which weakens the scalability of the methods. The other is that the crowdsourcing-based methods encounter the cold boot problem in the system initial stage. To address these issues, the paper proposes a topology… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.53, No.1, pp. 37-47, 2017, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2017.053.039

Abstract DSP operation in a Biomedical related therapeutic hardware need to be performed with high accuracy and with high speed. Portable DSP hardware’s like pulse/heart beat detectors must perform with reduced operational power due to lack of conventional power sources. This work proposes a hybrid biomedical hardware chip in which the speed and power utilization factors are greatly improved. Multipliers are the core operational unit of any DSP SoC. This work proposes a LUT based unsigned multiplication which is proven to be efficient in terms of high operating speed. For n bit input multiplication n*n memory array of 2n bit size… More >

Shear Strength Evaluation of Concrete Beams Reinforced with BFRP Bars and Steel fibers without Stirrups

    Smitha Gopinath1,2, S. Meenu3, A. Ramach,ra Murthy1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.51, No.2, pp. 81-103, 2016, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2016.051.081

Abstract This paper presents experimental and analytical investigations on concrete beams reinforced with basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) and steel fibers without stirrups. Independent behaviour of BFRP reinforced beams and steel fiber reinforced beams were evaluated and the effect of combining BFRP bars and steel fiber was investigated in detail. It is found that combining steel fibers with BFRP could change the shear failure of BFRP reinforced beam to flexural failure. Further, the existing analytical models were reviewed and compared to predict the shear strength of both FRP reinforced and steel fiber reinforced beams. Based on the review, the appropriate model… More >

    P.G. Santos1, J. Carbajo2, L. Godinho3, J. Ramis2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.43, No.2, pp. 109-136, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.043.109

Abstract The study of periodic structures, namely sonic crystals, for sound attenuation purposes has been a topic of intense research in the last years. Some efficient methods are available in literature to solve the problem of sound propagation in the presence of this kind of structures such as those based in the Multiple Scattering Theory (MST) or the Finite Element Method (FEM). In this paper a solution based on the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) which presents advantages, namely in computational discretization and calculation costs, is presented. The proposed formulation considers the presence of elastic ring shaped scatterers, correctly accounting for… More >

Some Applications of Metamaterial Resonators Based on Symmetry Properties

    J. Naqui1, F. Martín1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 267-288, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.267

Abstract Metamaterial resonators are electrically small resonant particles useful for the implementation of effective media metamaterials. In this paper, some applications of metamaterial resonators (such as the split ring resonator -SRR-, the complementary split ring resonator -CSRR-, the folded stepped impedance resonator -SIR-, and the electric LC resonator), that exploit the symmetry properties of transmission lines loaded with such symmetric particles, are reviewed. This covers differential (balanced) lines with common mode suppression, linear and angular displacement sensors (including alignment sensors), angular velocity sensors, and radiofrequency barcodes. Advantages and drawbacks as compared to existing implementations are also discussed. More >

Effects of TGO Roughness on Indentation Response of Thermal Barrier Coatings

    Taotao Hu1, gping Shen1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.17, No.1, pp. 41-58, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.017.041

Abstract In this paper, an axisymmetric indentation model is set up to calculate the effects of the roughness of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer, which was modeled as a sinusoidal wave, on the indentation response of the thermal barrier coatings. It is found that the amplitude, wavelength, and thickness of the thermally grown oxide layer have obvious influences on the indentation response, while the effect of the indenter position can be neglected. In the top coating layer, residual stress mainly occurs below the indenter and around the nearest two peaks of the thermally grown oxide layer to the indenter. Only… More >
