    Abstract There are several difficulties in generalized/extended finite element methods (GFEM/XFEM) for moving interface problems. First, the GFEM/XFEM may be unstable in a sense that condition numbers of system matrices could be much bigger than those of standard FEM. Second, they may not be robust in that the condition numbers increase rapidly as interface curves approach edges of meshes.     Abstract Simojovel pepper seeds were first treated with 0.5 M NaCl, and then put to germinate in solutions of gibberellic acid at different concentrations. Initially, seeds were either preconditioned or not with NaCl combined with 0, 100, 200, 300 or 400 mg/L gibberellic acid. In a second phase of the study, seeds preconditioned with NaCl were exposed to 0, 350, 400, 450 or 500 mg/L gibberellic acid.     Abstract Dystrophin is a membrane-associated protein responsible for structural stability of the sarcolemma in cardiac myocytes and is very sensitive to ischemic damage. The goal of our study was to determine if ischemic preconditioning could prevent dystrophin breakdown through inhibition of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) activity. Isolated rabbit hearts were subjected to global ischemia with or without reperfusion in order to evaluate if dystrophin is preserved by ischemic preconditioning through MMP-2 inhibition.     Abstract Ischemic postconditioning (IP) has been shown to provide protection for ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury, but its efficacy is limited. In this study we hypothesized that spontaneous running wheel (RW) could improve neuroprotection efficacy of IP for IR. We established mouse models of IR and showed that compared to Sham group, IR group had obvious brain infract and neurological dysfunction. In IR+IP group, brain infract and neurological dysfunction improved compared to IR group. However, in IR+IP+RW group brain infract and neurological dysfunction improved much better. Comparisons of volume integral equation formulations with the finite element-boundary integral method are given in terms of accuracy and computing resources.
