Three-month effects of corneal cross-linking on corneal fibroblasts

    XINYAN CHEN1,2, HAIXIA ZHANG1,2, LIN LI1,2,*

    BIOCELL, Vol.45, No.4, pp. 1023-1032, 2021, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2021.014873

Abstract Corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) has revolutionized the treatment of keratoconus in the past decade. In order to evaluate the 3-month effects of CXL on corneal fibroblasts, a longitudinal study at the tissue and cellular level was carried out with a total of 16 rabbits that underwent CXL, deepithelialization (DEP), or non-treatment (control) and kept for 1 to 3 months. The duration of corneal stromal remodeling after CXL was determined by examining the differentiation, apoptosis, and number changes of keratocytes in tissue sections from animals 1, 2, or 3 months post-treatment. Upon the finish of tissue remodeling, separate rabbits were used… More >

Covalent and Ionic Bonding between Tannin and Collagen in Leather Making and Shrinking: A MALDI-ToF Study

    Antonio Pizzi*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.8, pp. 1345-1364, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.015663

Abstract Collagen powder hydrolysates were reacted with a solution of commercial mimosa bark tannin extract. The mixture was prepared at ambient temperature and prepared at 80°C to determine what reactions, if any, did occur between the collagen protein through its amino acids and the polyphenolic condensed tannin. The reaction products obtained were analyzed by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI ToF) mass spectrometry. Reactions between the two materials did appear to occur, with the formation of a relatively small proportion of covalent and ionic linkages at ambient temperature but a considerable proportion of covalent linkages tannin-protein amino acids and the… More >

Study on the Soy Protein-Based Adhesive Cross-Linked by Glyoxal

    Zhigang Wu1,2,#, Jiankun Liang3,#, Hong Lei1,*, Bengang Zhang1, Xuedong Xi1, Lifen Li2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 205-218, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.013655

Abstract Based on the ESI-MS and 13C-NMR analysis of the forms of glyoxal in acidic and alkaline solutions, the soy-based adhesive cross-linked by glyoxal was prepared in this work. The results showed that glyoxal existed in water in different forms at different pH levels. Under alkaline conditions, glyoxal transformed to glycolate through the intramolecular disproportionation reaction. Under acidic conditions, although some of glyoxal transformed to glycolate as what happened under alkaline conditions, most of glyoxal molecules existed in the form of five- or six-membered cyclic ether structure. No ethylene tetraol or free aldehyde group was actually detected under these conditions. Although… More >

Preparation and Properties of Guiqi Polysaccharides/Chitosan/Alginate Composite Hydrogel Microspheres

    Xiaoliang Zhao1,#, Yuting Wang1,#, Xiuying Pu1, Jianzhong Ma1, Feifan Leng1, Yonggang Wang1, Yanling Wang1, Shuhong Yang1, Fen Ran2, Weijie Zhang1,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.12, pp. 1321-1332, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07757

Abstract A series of the Guiqi polysaccharides/chitosan/alginate composite hydrogel microspheres (GPcM) with different particle sizes were prepared with Guiqi polysaccharides (GP), chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (Alg). The optimum preparation process was also determined by single factor and orthogonal experiment analysis. The GPcM were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), drug loading efficiency test (LE), encapsulation efficiency test (EE) and in vitro release study. The results showed that the Guiqi polysaccharides chitosan hydrogel (GPCH) and sodium alginate hydrogel (SAH) formed a crossover system in GPcM. The GPcM have a uniform particle size ranging from 395.1μm to… More >

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Carbon Nanotubes Cross-Bonding by Proton Irradiation

    N. J. Lee, C.R. Welch1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 11-12, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.013.011

Abstract Carbon nanotubes have significant potential as the basis for super infrastructure material. The shear modulus of carbon nanotube ensembles is relatively low, comparable to graphite, as the carbon nanotubes interact via weak van der Waals forces. Unmodified, their intermolecular interactions are insufficient to take full advantage of the extraordinarily high strengths predicted for carbon nanotube-based fibers. Thus, a key to their use in high-strength materials is developing strong bonds between these molecules. In this study, we examine the potential development of covalent bonds between carbon nanotube pairs cross-bonded by proton bombardment using molecular dynamics simulation. Covalent bond formation between aligned… More >

Enzymatic Synthesis of Polycaprolactone: Effect of Immobilization Mechanism of CALB on Polycaprolactone Synthesis

    Yasemin Kaptan, M.Sc.1,*, Yüksel Avcıbaşı-Güvenilir1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.6, pp. 619-629, 2018, DOI:10.32604/JRM.2018.00142

Abstract Surface-modified rice husk ash was used as an inorganic support material for immobilization of Candida antarctica lipase B. (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane was used for surface modification. Immobilization of CALB was performed via both physical adsorption and cross-linking. PCL synthesis was carried out by using these immobilized enzymes, free enzyme and Novozyme 435®. Molecular weight distribution of polymer samples was obtained by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and chain structures of the polymer samples were observed by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). The highest monomer conversion is generally obtained by using cross-linked enzyme, around 90%. PDI values for all polymer samples were approximately… More >
