    Cui Li1, Deli Gao1, Zhiyong Wu1, Binbin Diao1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.89, No.1, pp. 39-56, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.089.039

Abstract At present, a relief well is the most reliable method to control serious blowout accidents, and it is necessary to detect very accurately the relative position of the relief well and the blowout well. The detection tool should be capable of detecting directly the relative distance and direction between the relief well and the blowout well. Its detection accuracy should also meet the engineering demand of drilling a relief well. Using the working principle of a proposed detection tool, this paper analyzes the spread and attenuation laws of the current injected by a single-electrode or three-electrode array in the relief… More >

Continuation Schemes for Shape Detection in Inverse Acoustic Scattering Problems

    S.-W. Na1, L.F. Kallivokas2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.35, No.1, pp. 73-90, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.035.073

Abstract We discuss simple numerical schemes, termed continuation schemes, for detecting the location and shape of a scatterer embedded in a host acoustic medium, when considering scant measurements of the scattered acoustic pressure in the vicinity (near- or far-field) of the obstacle. The detection is based on incomplete information, i.e., the measurement stations are distributed in the backscatter region and do not circumscribe the sought scatterer. We consider sound-hard scatterers, and use boundary integral equations for the underlying numerical scheme. We favor amplitude-based misfit functionals, and use frequency- and directionality-continuation schemes to resolve the scatterer's location and shape. We report on… More >

Inverse Scatterer Reconstruction in a Halfplane Using Surficial SH Line Sources

    C. Jeong1, L.F. Kallivokas2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.35, No.1, pp. 49-72, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.035.049

Abstract We discuss the inverse scattering problem of identifying the shape and location of a rigid scatterer fully buried in a homogeneous halfplane, when illuminated by surficial (line) wave sources generating SH waves. To this end, we consider the full-waveform response of the coupled host-obstacle system in the frequency domain, and employ the apparatus of partial-differential-equation-constrained optimization, augmented with total differentiation for tracking shape evolutions across inversion iterations, and specialized continuation schemes in lieu of formal regularization. We report numerical results that provide evidence of algorithmic robustness for detecting a variety of shapes, including elliptically- and kite-shaped obstacles. More >

The Detection of Super-elliptical Inclusions in Infrared Computerised Axial Tomography

    N.S.Mera1, L. Elliott2, D.B.Ingham2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 107-114, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.015.107

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficiency, accuracy and rate of convergence of an evolutionary algorithm for detecting inclusions parametrised by superellipses in non-destructive evaluation and testing. The inverse problem investigated consists of identifying the geometry of discontinuities in a conductive material from Cauchy data measurements taken on the boundary. Temperature and heat flux are measured on the outside boundary of the domain and the position and the size of a super-elliptical inclusion are determined by minimising an objective functional using an evolution strategy. The super-elliptical form allows the parametric model to characterise a variety of shapes… More >

A Hybrid of Interval Wavelets and Wavelet Finite Element Model for Damage Detection in Structures

    Jiawei Xiang1, Toshiro Matsumoto2, Yanxue Wang3, Zhansi Jiang4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.81, No.3&4, pp. 269-294, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.081.269

Abstract Damages occurred in a structure will lead to changes in modal parameters (natural frequencies and modal shapes). The relationship between modal parameters and damage parameters (locations and depths) is very complicated. Single detection method using natural frequencies or modal shapes can not obtain robust damage detection results from the inevitably noise-contaminated modal parameters. To eliminate the complexity, a hybrid approach using both of wavelets on the interval (interval wavelets) method and wavelet finite element model-based method is proposed to detect damage locations and depths. To avoid the boundary distortion phenomenon, Interval wavelets are employed to analyze the finite-length modal shape… More >

Multiple Damage Detection Method for Beams Based on Multi-Scale Elements Using Hermite Cubic Spline Wavelet

    Jiawei Xiang1,2, Ming Liang1,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.73, No.3, pp. 267-298, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.073.267

Abstract The importance of damage detection in structures has been widely recognized in mechanical and civil engineering. A new method is proposed to detect multiple damages based on frequency measurement. According to linear fracture mechanics theory, the damages are modeled by rotational springs. The first problem of interest is concerned with the construction of multi-scaling wavelet finite element model using Hermite cubic spline wavelet on the interval (HCSWI) in the forward problem analysis to obtain damages detection database. The second problem is the inverse problem analysis to determine the number of damages, their locations and depths based on the minimum Root-mean-square… More >

Compact Modelling of Electric Arc Furnace Electrodes for Vibration Analysis, Detection and Suppression

    E. Brusa1, E. Franceschinis2, S. Morsut2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.42, No.2, pp. 75-106, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.042.075

Abstract Electrodes motion and positioning are critical issues of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) operation in steelmaking process. During the melting process electrode is exposed to some impulsive and harmonic forces, superimposing to the structure's static loading. Unfortunately, structural vibration may interact with the electric arc regulation, because of the dynamic resonance. Instability in the furnace power supplying and dangerous electrode breakage may occur as a consequence of those dynamic effects. In this paper the dynamic behaviour of a real EAF structure is discussed and some numerical models are proposed. Available experimental data, collected by a monitoring system on a real… More >

Modeling of Degraded Composite Beam Due to Moisture Absorption For Wave Based Detection.

Shamsh Tabrez, Mira Mitra, S. Gopalakrishnan1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 77-90, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.022.077

Abstract In this paper, wave propagation is studied in degraded composite beam due to moisture absorption. The obtained wave responses are then used for diagnosis of the degraded zone. Moisture absorption causes an irreversible hygrothermal deterioration of the material. The change in temperature and moisture absorption changes the mechanical properties. Thus this affects the structure in dimensional stability as well as material degradation due to reduction in mechanical properties. Here, the composite beam is modeled as Timoshenko beam using wavelet based spectral finite element (WSFE) method. The WSFE technique is especially tailored for simulation of wave propagation. It involves Daubechies scaling… More >

    Jae Bong Lee1, Jai Hak Park1, Sung Ho Lee2, Hong-Deok Kim2, Han-Sub Chung2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 9-16, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.011.009

Abstract The growth of stress corrosion cracks in steam generator tubes is predicted using the Monte Carlo simulation and statistical approaches. The statistical parameters that represent the characteristics of crack growth and crack initiation are derived from in-service inspection (ISI) non-destructive evaluation (NDE) data. Based on the statistical approaches, crack growth models are proposed and applied to predict crack distribution at the end of cycle (EOC). Because in-service inspection (ISI) crack data is different from physical crack data, a simple method for predicting the physical number of cracks from periodic in-service inspection data is proposed in this study. Actual number of… More >

    Sameer R. Sonkusale1, Wangren Xu1, Saroj Rout1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.39, No.3, pp. 301-315, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2014.039.301

Abstract This paper illustrates some new concepts in the area of hybrid metamaterials, which are metamaterials that are embedded with active circuit elements such as transistors. Such transistor/metamaterial hybrids can exhibit some exotic electromagnetic properties which can be exploited for unusual and exciting functions. Two specific examples are provided. In one application, terahertz (THz) modulator based on embedding of psuedomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) within the metamaterial resonator, all implemented monolithically in a commercial gallium arsenide (GaAs) technology is presented. In another application, a detector array based on metamaterial perfect absorber for room-temperature detection of gigahertz (GHz) radiation within each… More >
