Abd Al Karim Jaafar1, Suleiman Salim1, Dema Altheb1, Mukhtar Iderawumi Abdulraheem2,3, Andrés Rodríguez-Seijo4,5,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.12, pp. 3945-3960, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.072520 - 29 December 2025

Abstract The use of organic fertilizers can be an opportunity to increase crop yield and improve soil fertility in semi-arid regions, since soils from these regions usually have unfavourable conditions for plant growth. This research investigates the effects of organic and mineral fertilization on the impact of soil properties (pH, electrical conductivity and organic matter), availability of macro- (N, P and K), micro-nutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn) and the accumulation of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cr) in soil and potato tubers grown under semiarid conditions. A field experiment was conducted in Raqqa Governorate (Syria) using… More >

Mycorrhizal Fertilizer Enhances Lettuce Growth and Vitamin C in Semi-Arid Conditions

    Ceren Ayşe Bayram*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.10, pp. 3283-3295, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.073047 - 29 October 2025

Abstract In semi-arid regions where climatic limitations hinder open-field vegetable production, greenhouse-based lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivation plays a vital role in ensuring off-season supply. In this study, the potential of sustainable input combinations was evaluated to enhance lettuce productivity, quality, and profitability under unheated greenhouse conditions in Southeastern Türkiye. Treatments included farmer practice and a mycorrhizal biofertilizer (ERS, a water-soluble arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus product) applied alone or in combination with organic-based biostimulants (IS and NM). Evaluated parameters were plant height, leaf pigmentation (a*, h°), SPAD values, vitamin C, nitrogen and phosphorus content, and gross margin. The More >

    Guiling Xu1,#, Xiaoxuan You1,#, Yuehua Feng1,2,*, Xiaoke Wang1, Yuqi Gao1, Hongjun Ren1, Zhili Han1, Jiale Li1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.10, pp. 3251-3268, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.067997 - 29 October 2025

Abstract Nitrogen (N) reduction combined with organic fertilizer has become a highly popular fertilization method, meeting the sustainable development of agriculture. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of N reduction (NR) and combined application of organic fertilizer (OF) on N utilization, yield, and quality of hybrid indica rice in the karst area. Using rice ‘Yixiangyou2115’ as the material, a split-plot design experiment was carried out with OF application rate as the main plots and NR rate as the subplots. The OF application rate had three levels: M0 (0 kg/ha), M1 (low OF, 1673… More >

Impact of Fertilizer Types on the Physicochemical Parameters of Culture Substrate and the Growth of Pelargonium zonale

    Andreea Moldovan1, Ioana Moldovan2,*, Lukács Lehel2, Antonia Odagiu3, Lucia Draghia4, Maria Cantor1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.9, pp. 2767-2779, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.069324 - 30 September 2025

Abstract Pelargonium zonale is an important ornamental and medicinal plant. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of conventional and unconventional fertilization on variations in the physicochemical parameters of the culture substrate (temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity) in two cultivars of Pelargonium zonale (L.) L’Hér., grown in pots. This study was conducted under greenhouse conditions, using Pindstrup peat as the culture substrate. The analysis focused on how these physicochemical indicators of peat influenced plant height and development under fertilization conditions. Results revealed that in the ‘Tango Salmon’ cultivar, both fertilization regimes significantly modified substrate temperature… More >

Abstract Corn (Zea mays L.) is a very sensitive crop to phosphorus (P) deficiency during the early development phase, which may be a limiting factor for the sustainable production of this crop in P-deficient tropical soils. However, scientific evidence indicates that inoculation with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria can improve the development, uptake, and P-use efficiency of corn plants. In the present study, two contrasting corn hybrids were investigated for their responsiveness to multiple inoculations of Bacillus subtilis, B. megaterium, B. velezencis, and Pseudomonas fluorescens and application of phosphate fertilizer rates in the sandy soil of the Brazilian Cerrado. Plants from stable (DKB 360… More >

Compound Fertilizer Application Improves the Growth of Herbaceous Peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) under High Temperature in Summer

Zhipeng Sheng, Zhaoyu Hou, Jun Tao, Daqiu Zhao*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.6, pp. 1751-1767, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.065874 - 27 June 2025

Abstract Summer high temperatures have severely impaired the growth of herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) in East China. While compound fertilizer application enhances soil fertility and promotes plant growth, its efficacy in maintaining optimal plant performance under summer heat stress remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of compound fertilizer application on herbaceous peony growth during summer thermal stress. Results demonstrated that compound fertilizer supplementation significantly improved plant growth under elevated temperatures, manifesting enhanced phenotypic characteristics, elevated antioxidant enzyme activities, and increased nutrient accumulation. Compared to untreated controls, fertilized plants exhibited three key responses: (1) increased More >

Abstract Improving crop productivity and soil fertility through the balanced application of inorganic and organic nutrient sources is a sustainable approach in modern agriculture. Char land soils, widely distributed in riverine Bangladesh, are generally low in organic matter status and deficient in necessary nutrient elements for crop production. Addressing this challenge, the present study was conducted to investigate the effects of various organic nutrient sources with inorganic fertilizers on crop yields, nutrient uptake, and soil fertility in farm (L1) and char land (L2) of Brahmaputra River in Mymensingh, Bangladesh from 2022 (Y1) to 2023 (Y2). Yanhong Zhang, Tong Sun, Jinyan Zhu, Qiangqiang Xiong, Jinlong Hu, Haipeng Zhang, Nianbing Zhou, Hongcheng Zhang*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.93, No.12, pp. 3573-3587, 2024, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2024.057690 - 31 December 2024

Abstract We investigated the differences in metabolites related to rice yield under different nitrogen fertilizer levels and the regulatory roles of key metabolites in metabolic pathways, in the hope of providing data support from the metabolite level for further regulation of rice yield. This study focused on the rice variety Yangchan 15002 and used non-targeted metabolomics methods to detect the metabolic products of rice leaves under three nitrogen fertilizer levels. The yield of oryza sativa plants under high nitrogen (A3: 315 kg/ha) conditions was significantly higher than that of plants under medium (A2: 270 kg/ha) and… More >
