Frequency Domain based Damage Index for Structural Health Monitoring

    G. Giridhara1, S. Gopalakrishnan2

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 1-32, 2009, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2009.005.001

Abstract In this paper, a new damage measure in the frequency domain (FDI), which uses the definition of strain energy in the frequency domain, is proposed. The proposed damage index is derived using the definition of frequency domain strain energy. The base line responses and the strain energies are computed using Wavelet Spectral Finite elements, while the strain energies for the damaged structure is computed using four high fidelity experimental responses. The sensitivity of the damage measure in locating cracks of different sizes and orientation is demonstrated on a square plate, the rectangular plate and on a compressor blade. More >

    C. Braccesi1, F. Cianetti1, G. Lori1, D. Pioli1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.1, No.4, pp. 277-290, 2005, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2005.001.277

Abstract This paper describes an original frequency method for fatigue life estimation of mechanical components subjected to random inputs. Currently mechanical components life design under random loads is an important task of the research, due to the increasing importance of virtual simulation in opposition to the experimental tests. The frequency domain approach, in this context, seems to be able to supply reliable estimations with small computational effort. The proposed method belongs to the class of corrective coefficient to narrow-band formula methods and it has been thought for bimodal PSDs. The definition of the generalized bimodal processes and the research of the… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.118, No.2, pp. 351-375, 2019, DOI:10.31614/cmes.2018.04484

Abstract Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a respiratory syndrome that occurs due to insufficient airflow through the respiratory or respiratory arrest while sleeping and sometimes due to the reduced oxygen saturation. The aim of this paper is to analyze the respiratory signal of a person to detect the Normal Breathing Activity and the Sleep Apnea (SA) activity. In the proposed method, the time domain and frequency domain features of respiration signal obtained from the PPG device are extracted. These features are applied to the Classification and Regression Tree (CART)-Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) classifier which classifies the signal into normal breathing signal… More >

A MLPG (LBIE) method for solving frequency domain elastic problems

    E. J. Sellountos1, D. Polyzos2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.6, pp. 619-636, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.619

Abstract A new meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method for solving two dimensional frequency domain elastodynamic problems is proposed. Since the method utilizes, in its weak formulation, either the elastostatic or the frequency domain elastodynamic fundamental solution as test function, it is equivalent to the local boundary integral equation (LBIE) method. Nodal points spread over the analyzed domain are considered and the moving least squares (MLS) interpolation scheme for the approximation of the interior and boundary variables is employed. Two integral equations suitable for the integral representation of the displacement fields in the local sub- domains are used. The first utilizes the… More >

    Y,ong Gao1, Shubi Zhang1,*, Kefei Zhang2,*, Shijin Li1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.119, No.2, pp. 349-363, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.03943

Abstract Interferometric phase filtering is one of the key steps in interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR/SAR). However, the ideal filtering results are difficult to obtain due to dense fringe and low coherence regions. Moreover, the InSAR/SAR data range is relatively large, so the efficiency of interferential phase filtering is one of the major problems. In this letter, we proposed an interferometric phase filtering method based on an amended matrix pencil and linear window mean filter. The combination of the matrix pencil and the linear mean filter are introduced to the interferometric phase filtering for the first time. First, the interferometric signal… More >

2.5D Green's Functions in the Frequency Domain for Heat Conduction Problems in Unbounded, Half-space, Slab and Layered Media

António Tadeu1, Julieta António and Nuno Simões

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.6, No.1, pp. 43-58, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.006.043

Abstract This Analytical Green's functions for the steady-state response of homogeneous three-dimensional unbounded, half-space, slab and layered solid media subjected to a spatially sinusoidal harmonic heat line source are presented. In the literature, this problem is frequently referred to as the two-and-a-half dimensional fundamental solution or 2.5D Green's functions.
The proposed equations are theoretically interesting in themselves and they are also useful as benchmark results for validating numerical applications. They are also of great practical use in the formulation of three dimensional heat transfer problems in layered solid formations using integral transform methods and/or boundary elements.

Initial Conditions Contribution in Frequency-Domain BEM Analysis

    W. J. Mansur1, A. I. Abreu1, J. A. M. Carrer1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.6, No.1, pp. 31-42, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.006.031

Abstract This work is concerned with the computation of the contribution of initial conditions in two-dimensional (2D) frequency-domain analysis of transient scalar wave propagation problems with the corresponding Boundary Element Method (BEM) formulation. The paper describes how pseudo-forces, represented by generalized functions, can replace the initial conditions, related to the potential and its time derivative. The generation of such pseudo-forces is the subject of a detailed discussion. The formulation presented here carries out Discrete Fourier Transform (Direct: DFT, and Inverse: IDFT) via FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) algorithms. At the end of the paper four examples are presented in order to show… More >

Frequency Domain Based Solution for Certain Class of Wave Equations: An exhaustive study of Numerical Solutions

    Vinita Chellappan1, S. Gopalakrishnan1 and V. Mani1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.97, No.2, pp. 131-174, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.097.131

Abstract The paper discusses the frequency domain based solution for a certain class of wave equations such as: a second order partial differential equation in one variable with constant and varying coefficients (Cantilever beam) and a coupled second order partial differential equation in two variables with constant and varying coefficients (Timoshenko beam). The exact solution of the Cantilever beam with uniform and varying cross-section and the Timoshenko beam with uniform cross-section is available. However, the exact solution for Timoshenko beam with varying cross-section is not available. Laplace spectral methods are used to solve these problems exactly in frequency domain. The numerical… More >

The MLPG(5) for the Analysis of Transient Heat Transfer in the Frequency Domain

    L. Godinho1, D. Dias-da-Costa2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.96, No.5, pp. 293-316, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.096.293

Abstract Transient heat conduction problems can be dealt with using different numerical approaches. In some recent papers, a strategy to tackle these problems using a frequency domain formulation has been presented and successfully applied associated to methods such as the BEM. Here a formulation of the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) is developed and presented to allow the analysis of such problems. The proposed formulation makes use of the RBF-based version of the MLPG and employs the Heaviside step function as the test function, leading to the so-called MLPG(5). In addition, the method is associated with a visibility criterion to allow the… More >

Frequency Domain Analysis of Fluid-Solid Interaction Problems by Means of Iteratively Coupled Meshless Approaches

    L. Godinho1, D. Soares Jr.2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.87, No.4, pp. 327-354, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.087.327

Abstract In this work, a coupling strategy between the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) and the Kansa's Method (KM) for the analysis of fluid-solid interaction problems in the frequency domain is proposed. In this approach, the MFS is used to model the acoustic fluid medium, while KM accounts for the elastodynamic solid medium. The coupling between the two methods is performed iteratively, with independent discretizations being used for the two methods, without requiring matching between the boundary nodes along the solid-fluid interface. Two application examples, with single and multiple solid sub-domains, are presented, illustrating the behavior of the proposed approach. More >
