    ABSTRACT

Length scale effects on the shear localization process in metallic glasses: A theoretical and computational study

    Prakash Thamburaja

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 79-80, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.020.079

Abstract Some recent experiments on sub-micron and nano-sized metallic glass specimens have shown that the shear localization process becomes more stable and less catastrophic when compared to the response exhibited by large sample sizes. This leads to the discovery that the shear localization process and fracture can be delayed by decreasing sample volume. In this work we develop a non-local and finite-deformation-based constitutive model using thermodynamic principles and the theory of micro-force balance to study the causes for the aforementioned observations. The constitutive model has also been implemented into a commercially-available finite-element program by writing a user-material subroutine. With the aid… More >

A moving modified Trefftz method for inverse Laplace problems in two dimensional multiply-connected domain

    C.-L. Kuo, C.-S. Liu

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 85-86, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.085

Abstract In this paper, the inverse problems in a multiply connected domain governed by the Laplace equation have been investigated numerically by the developed moving modified Trefftz method. When solving the direct Laplace problem with the conventional Trefftz method, one may treat the ill-posed linear algebraic equations because the solution is obtained by expanding the diverging series; while when the inverse Laplace problem is encountered, it is more difficult to treat the more seriously ill-posed behaviors because the incomplete boundary data, and its solution, if exists, does not depend on the given boundary data continuously. Even many researchers have proposed lots… More >

Pseudo Arc-Length Algorithm for Numerical Simulation of Immiscible Compressible Multi-Material Flows

    Jinqing Zhao1, Tianbao Ma*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.21, No.3, pp. 47-47, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.06150

Abstract We describe a pseudo arc-length algorithm for numerical resolution of immiscible compressible multi-material flows with the Mie-Grüneisen type equation of state (EOS) governed by the quasi-conservative five-equation model. The governing equation is discretized in space uses the finite volume approach with a second-order accurate Godunov scheme. Time discretization is achieved using the strong stability-preserving high-order Runge-Kutta time discretization scheme. The five-equation model with the Mie-Grüneisen EOS is general enough to model materials with different equations of state and physical states. However, for long simulations, the interface of materials is indistinct because of numerical dissipation. The interfacial compression method is used… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 35-44, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.005.035

Abstract This paper addresses the need of theories and simulations for material body of mesoscopic and microscopic sizes. An overview of polar theories is presented. The micropolar theory proposed by Eringen is introduced and compared with other polar theories. Constitutive equations of micropolar thermo-visco-elastic solid are derived. Finite element analyses have been performed for a few sample problems with wide range of length scales. Based on the discussion, comparison and computer simulations, the unique feature and applicability of micropolar theory are demonstrated. More >

An FEM study on crack tip blunting in ductile fracture initiation

    N. Ramakrishnan1, P. Rama Rao2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.2, No.3, pp. 163-176, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2005.002.163

Abstract Ductile fracture is initiated by void nucleation at a characteristic distance (Ic) from the crack tip and propagated by void growth followed by coalescence with the tip. The earlier concepts expressed Ic in terms of grain size or inter-particle distance because grain and particle boundaries form potential sites for void nucleation. However, Srinivas et al. (1994) observed nucleation of such voids even inside the crack tip grains in a nominally particle free Armco iron. In an attempt to achieve a unified understanding of these observations, typical crack-tip blunting prior to ductile fracture in a standard C(T) specimen (Mode I) was… More >

    Filipe L. A. Ribeiro1,*, Andre R. Barbosa2, Luis C. Neves3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.120, No.3, pp. 657-676, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.06296

Abstract Although pre-Northridge earthquake steel moment resisting frame buildings have been shown to be susceptible to brittle connection failures, they still represent a large fraction of the existing steel buildings in the United States of America. In this study, the performance of the 3- and 9-story Los Angeles pre-Northridge SAC buildings are analyzed considering ductile and brittle beam-column connection failures, and their uncertainty. This paper contributes to understanding the influence of uncertainty associated with connections brittle fracture on building interstory deformation capacity and its impact on bias and variability of fragility functions and loss assessment. The results show that considering brittle… More >

    T.A. Elgohary1, L. Dong2, J.L. Junkins3, S.N. Atluri4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.98, No.6, pp. 543-563, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.098.543

Abstract In this study, the Scalar Homotopy Methods are applied to the solution of post-buckling and limit load problems of solids and structures, as exemplified by simple plane elastic frames, considering only geometrical nonlinearities. Explicitly derived tangent stiffness matrices and nodal forces of large-deformation planar beam elements, with two translational and one rotational degrees of freedom at each node, are adopted following the work of [Kondoh and Atluri (1986)]. By using the Scalar Homotopy Methods, the displacements of the equilibrium state are iteratively solved for, without inverting the Jacobian (tangent stiffness) matrix. It is well-known that, the simple Newton’s method (and… More >

    S.M. Moussavinezhad1, Farzad Shahabian1, Seyed Mahmoud Hosseini2,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.91, No.3, pp. 177-204, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.091.177

Abstract In this article, the propagation of elastic wave is studied in two dimensional functionally graded thick hollow cylinder with finite length subjected to mechanical shock loading, considering two dimensional variations for mechanical properties. The meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is developed to solve the boundary value problem. The Newmark finite difference method is used to treat the time dependence of the variables for transient problems. The FG cylinder is considered to be under axisymmetric conditions. The mechanical properties of FG cylinder are assumed to vary across thickness and length of FG cylinder in terms of two dimensional volume fractions as… More >

Multiple Time Scale Algorithm for Multiscale Material Modeling

    Jiaoyan Li1, Xianqiao Wang2, James D. Lee1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.85, No.5, pp. 463-480, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.085.463

Abstract This paper presents a novel multiple time scale algorithm integrated with the concurrent atomic/atom-based continuum modeling, which involves molecular dynamic (MD) simulation and coarse-grained molecular dynamic (CG-MD) simulation. To capture the key features of the solution region while still considering the computational efficiency, we decompose it into two sub-regions in space and utilize the central difference method with different time steps for different sub-regions to march on in time. Usually, the solution region contains a critical field and a non-critical far field. For the critical field (named atomic region) modeled by MD simulation, a relatively small time step is used… More >

A Simple Multi-Source-Point Trefftz Method for Solving Direct/Inverse SHM Problems of Plane Elasticity in Arbitrary Multiply-Connected Domains

    L. Dong1, S. N. Atluri1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.85, No.1, pp. 1-44, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.085.001

Abstract In this paper, a generalized Trefftz method in plane elasticity is developed, for solving problems in an arbitrary multiply connected domain. Firstly, the relations between Trefftz basis functions from different source points are discussed, by using the binomial theorem and the logarithmic binomial theorem. Based on these theorems, we clearly explain the relation between the T-Trefftz and the F-Trefftz methods, and why the traditional T-Trefftz method, which uses only one source point, cannot successfully solve problems in a multiply connected domain with genus larger than 1. Thereafter, a generalized Trefftz method is proposed, which uses logarithmic and negative power series… More >
