Mixed Lubrication of Coupled Journal-Thrust Bearing Systems

    Yansong Wang1, Q. Jane Wang1, Chih Lin2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.3, No.4, pp. 517-530, 2002, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2002.003.517

Abstract Many mechanisms, such as computer hard drives, gear trains, and machine tool spindle systems, operate under both axial and radial loads, which should be respectively supported by a thrust and a journal bearing. By utilizing the end face of the shaft of a journal bearing as a thrust bearing, a coupled journal-thrust bearing system can be formed. This paper presents a mixed lubrication model developed to investigate the lubrication of this coupled bearing system. A conformal-mapping method is used in the model formulation to facilitate a universal flow description. The performance of typical coupled bearing systems is numerically investigated. More >

    Souli, M.1, Aquelet, N.2, Al-Bahkali, E.3, Moatamedi, M.4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.91, No.2, pp. 119-133, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.091.119

Abstract To simulate accurately a pressure wave propagation problem, a fine mesh is required in order to capture peak pressures accurately. This may require a very large size problem with several millions of elements. To reduce CPU time and prevent high mesh distortion, a two-dimensional problem for blast ignition and pressure propagation is performed first on a fixed Eulerian mesh. When the pressure wave gets closer to the structure, a three dimensional ALE simulation follows, where the fluid mesh and structure mesh at the fluid structure interface are coincident. The three dimensional problem is performed after mapping history variables from the… More >

Ching Kong Chao1,2, Chin Kun Chen1, Fu Mo Chen3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.63, No.1, pp. 1-28, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.063.001

Abstract A general analytical solution for a reinforced elliptical hole embedded in an infinite matrix subjected to a point heat source is provided in this paper. Based on the technique of conformal mapping and the method of analytical continuation in conjunction with the alternating technique, the general expressions of the temperature and stresses in the reinforcement layer and the matrix are derived explicitly in a series form. Some numerical results are provided to investigate the effects of the material combinations and geometric configurations on the interfacial stresses. The solution obtained can be treated as Green's functions which enable us to formulate… More >

Analytical Exact Solutions of Heat Conduction Problems for a Three-Phase Elliptical Composite

Ching Kong Chao1,2, Chin Kun Chen1, Fu Mo Chen3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.47, No.3, pp. 283-298, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.047.283

Abstract Analytical exact solutions of a fundamental heat conduction problem for a three-phase elliptical composite under a remote uniform heat flow are provided in this paper. The steady-state temperature and heat flux fields in each phase of an elliptical composite are analyzed in detail. Investigations on the present heat conduction problem are tedious due to the presence of material inhomogeneities and geometric discontinuities. Based on the technique of conformal mapping and the method of analytical continuation in conjunction with the alternating technique, the general expressions of the temperature and heat flux are derived explicitly in a closed form. Some numerical results… More >

A Modified Trefftz Method for Two-Dimensional Laplace Equation Considering the Domain's Characteristic Length

    Chein-Shan Liu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.21, No.1, pp. 53-66, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.021.053

Abstract A newly modified Trefftz method is developed to solve the exterior and interior Dirichlet problems for two-dimensional Laplace equation, which takes the characteristic length of problem domain into account. After introducing a circular artificial boundary which is uniquely determined by the physical problem domain, we can derive a Dirichlet to Dirichlet mapping equation, which is an exact boundary condition. By truncating the Fourier series expansion one can match the physical boundary condition as accurate as one desired. Then, we use the collocation method and the Galerkin method to derive linear equations system to determine the Fourier coefficients. Here, the factor… More >

A Highly Accurate Solver for the Mixed-Boundary Potential Problem and Singular Problem in Arbitrary Plane Domain

    Chein-Shan Liu 1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.20, No.2, pp. 111-122, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.020.111

Abstract A highly accurate new solver is developed to deal with interior and exterior mixed-boundary value problems for two-dimensional Laplace equation, including the singular ones. To promote the present study, we introduce a circular artificial boundary which is uniquely determined by the physical problem domain, and derive a Dirichlet to Robin mapping on that artificial circle, which is an exact boundary condition described by the first kind Fredholm integral equation. As a consequence, we obtain a modified Trefftz method equipped with a characteristic length factor, ensuring that the new solver is stable because the condition number can be greatly reduced. Then,… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 1-10, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.005.001

Abstract A neural network (NN) model is developed for the analysis and prediction of the mapping between degradation of chemical elements and electrochemical parameters during the corrosion process. The input parameters to the neural network model are alloy composition, electrochemical parameters, and corrosion time. The output parameters are the degradation of chemical elements in AA 2024-T3 material. The NN is trained with the data obtained from Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) on corroded specimens. A very good performance of the neural network is achieved after training and validation with the experimental data. After validating the NN model, simulations were carried out… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.58, No.1, pp. 263-285, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.03924

Abstract Watermarking is a widely used solution to the problems of authentication and copyright protection of digital media especially for images, videos, and audio data. Chaos is one of the emerging techniques adopted in image watermarking schemes due to its intrinsic cryptographic properties. This paper proposes a new chaotic hybrid watermarking method combining Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Z-transform (ZT) and Bidiagonal Singular Value Decomposition (BSVD). The original image is decomposed into 3-level DWT, and then, ZT is applied on the HH3 and HL3 sub-bands. The watermark image is encrypted using Arnold Cat Map. BSVD for the watermark and transformed original image… More >

Snow Cover Mapping for Mountainous Areas by Fusion of MODIS L1B and Geographic Data Based on Stacked Denoising Auto-Encoders

    Xi Kan1, Yonghong Zhang2,*, Linglong Zhu2, Liming Xiao2, Jiangeng Wang3, Wei Tian4, Haowen Tan5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.57, No.1, pp. 49-68, 2018, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2018.02376

Abstract Snow cover plays an important role in meteorological and hydrological researches. However, the accuracies of currently available snow cover products are significantly lower in mountainous areas than in plains, due to the serious snow/cloud confusion problem caused by high altitude and complex topography. Aiming at this problem, an improved snow cover mapping approach for mountainous areas was proposed and applied in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. In this work, a deep learning framework named Stacked Denoising Auto-Encoders (SDAE) was employed to fuse the MODIS multispectral images and various geographic datasets, which are then classified into three categories: Snow, cloud and snow-free land. Moreover,… More >
