    Zhenyu Li1, Hongze Li2, Jinshui Yang2, Hong Hu1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.33, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2025, DOI:10.32604/icces.2025.010548

Abstract The urgent need to achieve "carbon neutrality" drives the development of innovative porous structures that integrate both acoustic and mechanical properties, aimed at reducing energy consumption. However, enhancing these functionalities often results in increased structural weight, which can restrict their application in scenarios where weight is a critical factor. In response to this challenge, we present a groundbreaking structural design that combines carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites with mechanical and acoustic metamaterials for the first time. This novel construction is characterized by its lightweight nature while delivering exceptional mechanical strength and acoustic performance.

Beyond Classical Elasticity: A Review of Strain Gradient Theories, Emphasizing Computer Modeling, Physical Interpretations, and Multifunctional Applications

    Shubham Desai, Sai Sidhardh*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.144, No.2, pp. 1271-1334, 2025, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2025.068141 - 31 August 2025

Abstract The increasing integration of small-scale structures in engineering, particularly in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), necessitates advanced modeling approaches to accurately capture their complex mechanical behavior. Classical continuum theories are inadequate at micro- and nanoscales, particularly concerning size effects, singularities, and phenomena like strain softening or phase transitions. This limitation follows from their lack of intrinsic length scale parameters, crucial for representing microstructural features. Theoretical and experimental findings emphasize the critical role of these parameters on small scales. This review thoroughly examines various strain gradient elasticity (SGE) theories commonly employed in literature to capture these size-dependent effects… More >

    M. Boonkam, P. Tamdee, P. Tongying*

    Chalcogenide Letters, Vol.21, No.4, pp. 335-342, 2024, DOI:10.15251/CL.2024.214.335

Abstract This work presents a facile hydrothermal synthesis method for fabricating a multifunctional composite of copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) nanoparticles coated onto sepiolite fibers. Morphological analysis confirms the firm attachment of approximately 10 nm CZTS nanoparticles onto the sepiolite surface. Elemental analysis verifies the presence of constituent elements from both CZTS and sepiolite, with a slight deficiency in Cu and an abundance of Zn observed. The compositional formula of CZTS in the composite is estimated as Cu1.93Zn1.05Sn0.98S4.04. Notably, the material exhibits a narrow band gap of 1.5 eV, enabling effective utilization of the entire visible light More >

    Norma E. Marcovich1, Matías Federico Hernández1,2, María Roberta Ansorena2,*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.12, No.12, pp. 2049-2068, 2024, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2024.055151 - 20 December 2024

Abstract In this work, active and edible films for food packaging were obtained by intensive mixing and compression molding of the wheat gluten (WG) glycerol-plasticized paste. Thyme essential oil (TEO, 10 and 15 wt.%) was incorporated as the active component microencapsulated in β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) and included directly into the biopolymer matrix for comparison. It was found that films incorporating microencapsulated TEO are more soluble in water (total soluble matter (dry method) of about 33% and 36.6% vs. 22.4% and 18.6%, for films containing 10% and 15% TEO, respectively) but less rigid than those obtained with free oil… More > Graphic Abstract

Inverse Design of Multifunctional Shape-Morphing Structures Based on Functionally Graded Composites

    Hirak Kansara1, Mingchao Liu2,*, Yinfeng He3, Wei Tan1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.31, No.4, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011328

Abstract Shape-morphing structures exhibit the remarkable ability to transition between different configurations, offering vast potential across numerous applications. A common example involves the transformation from a flat two-dimensional (2D) state to a desired three-dimensional (3D) form. One prevalent technique for fabricating such structures entails strategically cutting thin sheet materials (known as kirigami), which, upon the application of external mechanical forces, morph into the intended 3D shape. A method leveraging the non-linear beam equation has been proposed for inverse design, determining the optimal 2D cutting patterns necessary to achieve a symmetrical 3D shape. Central to this strategy… More >

Numerical Modeling for Crack Propagation Based on a Multifunctional Super Singular Element

    Xuecheng Ping1,2,*, Congman Wang1,2, Xingxing Wang1,2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.30, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011724

Abstract The traditional finite element method (FEM) often requires a large number of refined meshes to analyze the mechanical behavior of geometric discontinuities, its computational efficiency and convergence speed are affected. A FEM for crack propagation based on the combination of an adaptive remeshing technique with the multifunctional super singular element (MSSE) at the crack tip is proposed for the fracture process simulation of two-dimensional (2D) materials. The adaptive FEM for crack propagation divides the crack tip neighborhood into the MSSE region, the protection element (PE) region and the background element (BE) region. The MSSE is… More >
