Abstract Background: Patients with unrepaired Ebstein’s anomaly experience exercise intolerance, heart failure and premature mortality. Volumetric assessment of right ventricular function is difficult due to the complex anatomy of the right ventricle and tricuspid valve. Myocardial deformation indices are an early marker in other cardiac pathologies of ventricular dysfunction. Objectives: 1. Assess myocardial deformation in unrepaired Ebstein’s compared to healthy controls. 2. Investigate the relationships between myocardial deformation and exercise capacity. Methods: Myocardial deformation parameters (strain) were calculated using feature tracking from standard cardiac magnetic resonance cine images. Cardiopulmonary exercise results were included where available. Results: 36 patients… More >

Abstract We describe a case of a rare congenital heart disorder, scimitar syndrome, diagnosed in an adult woman presenting with dyspnea on exertion, chest pain and recurrent episodes of pulmonary infections. The hallmark of the syndrome is the presence of an enlarged anomalous pulmonary vein draining into the inferior vena cava. Speckle tracking echocardiography, including the often-forgotten atrial strain evaluation, is a sensitive parameter that should be routinely used for a better clinical and prognostic evaluation of patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Echocardiography vs cardiac magnetic resonance imaging assessment of the systemic right ventricle for patients with d-transposition of the great arteries status post atrial switch

    Margaret M. Samyn1,2, Ke Yan1, Conor Masterson3, Benjamin H. Goot1,2, David Saudek1,2, Julie Lavoie2, Aaron Kinney2, Mary Krolikowski1, Kan Hor4,5, Scott Cohen1,2

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.14, No.6, pp. 1138-1148, 2019, DOI:10.1111/chd.12861

Abstract Objective: Patients with Dextro-transposition of the great arteries status post atrial switch (dTGA s/p atrial switch) are “at-risk” for systemic right ventricular (RV) dysfunction. Due to complex RV geometry, echocardiography (Echo) does not allow accurate determination of ejection fraction (EF), but cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) allows quantitative right ventricular assessment. Measures of ventricular deformation may be precursors to global ventricular dysfunction. The primary aim of this study was to characterize imaging and clinical findings for adult patients with dTGA s/p atrial switch.
Design: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with dTGA s/p atrial switch… More >
