Response of Nitrogen Use Efficiency, Yield and Quality of Rice to Nitrogen Reduction Combined with Organic Fertilizer in Karst Region

    Guiling Xu1,#, Xiaoxuan You1,#, Yuehua Feng1,2,*, Xiaoke Wang1, Yuqi Gao1, Hongjun Ren1, Zhili Han1, Jiale Li1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.10, pp. 3251-3268, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.067997 - 29 October 2025

Abstract Nitrogen (N) reduction combined with organic fertilizer has become a highly popular fertilization method, meeting the sustainable development of agriculture. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of N reduction (NR) and combined application of organic fertilizer (OF) on N utilization, yield, and quality of hybrid indica rice in the karst area. Using rice ‘Yixiangyou2115’ as the material, a split-plot design experiment was carried out with OF application rate as the main plots and NR rate as the subplots. The OF application rate had three levels: M0 (0 kg/ha), M1 (low OF, 1673… More >

Integrating Morphological and Digital Traits to Optimize Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Maize Hybrids

    Shamim Ara Bagum1, Mahbub Ul Islam2, M Shalim Uddin2,*, Sripati Sikder3, Ahmed Gaber4, Akbar Hossain5,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.94, No.6, pp. 1897-1919, 2025, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2025.065607 - 27 June 2025

Abstract The yield of maize (Zea mays L.) is highly influenced by nitrogen fertilization. This study investigated the impact of nitrogen fertilization on morphophysiological traits in maize (Zea mays L.) and developed algorithms to relate manual phenotyping and digital phenotyping of maize with leaf nitrogen and digital field image traits. The experiment included three hybrid maize varieties, V1 (Hybrid 981), V2 (BARI Hybrid maize-9), and V3 (Hybrid P3396), which were evaluated across three nitrogen levels (N1 = 100 kg N ha−1, N2 = 200 kg N ha−1, N3 = 300 kg N ha−1) in a split-plot design with three replications.… More >

Effect of Reaction-Finished Solution of Hydrochar (HRFS) Application on Rice Grain Yield and Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Saline Soil

    Zhenghua Yi1, Paramsothy Jeyakumar2, Jiang Jiang1, Xiaomian Zhang3, Chunlei Yue3, Haijun Sun1,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.91, No.4, pp. 859-868, 2022, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2022.018396 - 09 December 2021

Abstract We conducted a pot experiment to examine the feasibility of applying a reaction-finished solution of hydrochar (HRFS) to enhance rice production in a saline soil. With this purpose, HRFS was applied (0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mL/pot) and rice yield and nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) were determined. HRFS application significantly (P <0.05) increased rice grain yield by 19.6%–30.0% compared to the control treatment (CKU, with N but without HRFS addition). Moreover, HRFS application promoted plant height and straw biomass of rice. Increases of rice yield were mainly achieved by increases in the number… More >

Identification of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Analysis of Linkage Disequilibrium in Different Bamboo Species Using the Candidate Gene Approach

    Xihua Liu1, Min Luo1, Xiaofei Chen1, Changjun Ding2,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.90, No.6, pp. 1697-1709, 2021, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2021.015295 - 28 June 2021

Abstract Bamboos are one of the most beautiful and useful plants on Earth. The genetic background and population structure of bamboos are well known, which helps accelerate the process of artificial domestication of bamboo. Partial sequences of six genes involved in nitrogen use efficiency in 32 different bamboo species were analyzed for occurrence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The nucleotide diversity θw and total nucleotide polymorphisms πT of the sequenced DNA regions was 0.05137 and 0.03332, respectively. Both πnonsyn /πsyn and Ka/Ks values were <1. The nucleotide sequences of these six genes were inferred to be relatively… More >

Influence of Biochar on Nitrogen Use Efficiency and Root Morphology of Rice-Seedling in Two Contrasting Paddy Soils

    Lei Chu1,2, Yu Zhang1,2, Long Qian1,2, Dandan Zhu1,2, Haijun Sun1,2,*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.89, No.4, pp. 1035-1042, 2020, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2020.014506 - 09 November 2020

Abstract Biochar may affect the root morphology and nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) of rice at seedling stage, which has not been clearly verified until now. To clarify it, we conducted a pot experiment regarding to two soil types (Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol), two biochar application rates (0.5 wt% and 1.5 wt %) and two rice varieties (common rice var. Xiushui134 and hybrid super rice var. Zhongkejiayou12-6) meanwhile. Seedling NUE of common rice Xiuhui134 was significantly increased (p < 0.05) by 78.2% in Hydragric Anthrosol and by 91.4% in Haplic Acrisol following biochar addition with 1.5… More >
