Abstract Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have high thermal inertia, and hemp concrete (HC), a bio-based concrete, has strong hygroscopic behavior. In previous studies, PCM has been extensively combined with many materials, however, most of these studies focused on thermal properties while neglecting hygroscopic aspects. In this study, the two materials have been combined into a building envelope and the related hygrothermal properties have been studied. In particular, numerical studies have been performed to investigate the temperature and relative humidity behavior inside the HC, and the effect of adding PCM on the hygrothermal behavior of the HC.… More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.3, pp. 847-861, 2022, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.019051 - 31 March 2022

Abstract Thermal characteristics of phase change material (PCM) are important in design and utilization of thermal energy storage or other applications. PCMs have great latent heat but suffer from low thermal conductivity. Then, in recent years, nano particles have been added to PCM to improve their thermophysical properties such as thermal conductivity. Effect of this nano particles on thermophysical properties of PCM has been a question and many experimental and numerical studies have been done to investigate them. Artificial intelligence-based approach can be a good candidate to predict thermophysical properties of nano enhance PCM (NEPCM). Then,… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.18, No.3, pp. 775-788, 2022, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2022.019810 - 22 February 2022

Abstract A mathematical model for one-dimensional heat transfer in pipelines undergoing freezing induced by liquid nitrogen is elaborated. The basic premise of this technology is that the content within a pipeline is frozen to form a plug or two plugs at a position upstream and downstream from a location where work a modification or a repair must be executed. Based on the variable separation method, the present model aims to solve the related coupled heat conduction and moving-boundary phase change problem. An experiment with a 219 mm long pipe, where water was taken as the plugging More >

Abstract A novel trapezoidal design for storage of heat energy through melting of phase-change material (PCM) is investigated. Latent heat thermal energy storage system (LHTES) is a promising option to diminish mis-match between energy consumption and supply. For this purpose, Paraffin: Rubitherm-35 (RT35) material is successively melted in aluminum structure which is heated from one side and the other sides are kept adiabatic. Melting of PCM is observed experimentally and melt fronts are photographed for various time lengths. The fluid-solid module in COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4 has been utilized. The transient heat conduction with enthalpy function is… More >

Kapil Dev Choudhary, Shyam Sunder Yadav , Mani Sankar Dasgupta

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.16, pp. 1-10, 2021, DOI:10.5098/hmt.16.14

Abstract In the current work, we simulate the condensation of supercritical CO2 during its high speed flow inside two different converging-diverging nozzles. We use the homogeneous equilibrium method and the classical nucleation theory based non-equilibrium phase change model for this purpose. The simulation results indicate significant influence of the nozzle inlet condition, nozzle shape and the fluid thermophysical behaviour on the nonequilibrium conditions prevailing inside the nozzles. We observe very low, ∼0.15 K, supercooling for the flow of CO2 inside the Claudio Lettieri nozzle compared to the supercooling of ∼3 K observed for the Berana nozzle. Very… More >
