    K.N. Song1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 297-306, 2011, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2011.007.297

Abstract The IHX (Intermediate Heat Exchanger) of a VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) transfers 950° heat generated from the VHTR to a hydrogen production plant. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has manufactured a small-scale prototype of a PCHE (Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger) under consideration as a candidate of the IHX. In this study, as a part of high-temperature structural integrity evaluation of the small-scale PCHE prototype, we carried out a macroscopic structural behavior analysis including structural analysis modeling and thermal/elastic structural analysis under small-scale gas loop test conditions as a precedent study to a performance test. The results obtained… More >

An Evaluation of Fatigue Crack Growth in a Reactor Steel in Air and Aqueous Environments Considering Closure Effects

    Ivo Černý1, Václav Linhart2

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 73-86, 2009, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2009.005.073

Abstract The experimental programme described in the paper was aimed at an evaluation of fatigue crack growth (FCG) rate and threshold conditions in a reactor pressure vessel steel in laboratory air and in simple aqueous environment. Though the main target of the work was to enlarge the data basis for possible future needs of defect and risk assessment, an emphasis was put on an evaluation of crack growth mechanisms. It was shown that despite some recent works infirming crack closure phenomenon itself or methods of its evaluation, crack closure explained near-threshold fatigue crack behaviour in the specific case of the reactor… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.39, No.2-3, pp. 9-14, 2015, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2015.39.009

Abstract We have designed and evaluated a radial-flow bioreactor for three-dimensional liver carcinoma cell culture on a new porous coated scaffold. We designed a culture chamber where a radial flow of culture medium was continuously delivered through it. Once this system was established, flow was simulated using flow dynamics software based on numeric methods to solve Navier-Stockes flow equations. Perfusion within cell culture scaffolds was simulated using a flow velocity of 7 mL/min and found that cell culture medium was distributed unhindered in the bioreactor chamber. Afterwards, the bioreactor was built according to the simulated design and was tested with liver… More >

    Yanling Bai1,*, Feng Liu2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.15, No.4, pp. 307-319, 2019, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2019.07833

Abstract Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm is applied for the optimization of the heat transfer of a batch reactor. The validity of the approach is verified through comparison with experimental results. It is found that the mathematical model can properly describe the heat transfer relationships characterizing the considered system, with the error being kept within ±2°C. Indeed, the difference between the actual measured values and the model calculated value curve is within ±1.5°C, which is in agreement with the model assumptions and demonstrates the reliability and effectiveness of the algorithm applied to the batch reactor heat transfer model. Therefore, the present work provides… More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.43, No.1, pp. 29-36, 2019, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2019.04790

Abstract We present a bioreactor system which combines a semi permeable membrane that simulates the osmotic nutrients interchange in the small intestine circulation and rhythmic peristaltic movement. This custom-designed presents a semipermeable membrane bioreactor, with peristaltic flow and compression variation that allows adjustment of luminal flow rate. In addition, this system is also capable of achieving the drug distribution in the small intestine model from the apical compartment to the basal compartment by the semipermeable channel. This dynamic bioreactor can mimic the human small intestine with increased accuracy to overcome many of the limitations and accuracy with the previously described in… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.22, No.4, pp. 179-179, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.05396

Abstract A new Reduced Order Model (ROM) is developed for solving the neutron eigenvalue problem for the fast and accurate prediction and simulation of the neutron flux within light water reactor cores. The method of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition is employed to form the ROM which uses snapshots obtained from a full order model based on the finite element discretisation of the spatial dependence of the multi-group neutron diffusion equation. We detail how the temperature variation and control rod adjustments can be efficiently integrated into the model and their influence then accurately predicted within the model's solution. This is particularly important as… More >

A Scaling Approach for CFD-DEM Modelling of Thermochemical Behaviours in Moving Bed Reactors and Its Application

    Qinfu Hou1,*, Dianyu E.1,2, Shibo Kuang1, Aibing Yu1,3

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.22, No.1, pp. 96-97, 2019, DOI:10.32604/icces.2019.05438

Abstract Intensive heat and mass transfer between continuum fluids and discrete particulate materials plays a critical role in many chemical reactors [1]. For example, the shaft furnace and the blast furnace in ironmaking are operated with continuous charge and discharge of solid materials, and it takes hours for the solid materials moving from the furnace top to the bottom. To understand and improve the operation of these reactors, discrete particle models are very helpful when combined with flow, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reaction models [2-6]. However, due to the high computational cost with such discrete particle models, it is… More >

A Reduction Algorithm of Contact Problems for Core Seismic Analysis of Fast Breeder Reactors

    Ryuta Imai1, Masatoshi Nakagawa2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.84, No.3, pp. 253-282, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.084.253

Abstract In order to evaluate seismic response of fast breeder reactors, finite element analysis for core vibration with contact/impact is performed so far. However a full model analysis of whole core vibration requires huge calculation times and memory sizes. In this research, we propose an acceleration method of reducing the number of degrees of freedom to be solved until converged for nonlinear contact problems. Furthermore we show a sufficient condition for the algorithm to work well and discuss its efficiency and a generalization of the algorithm. In particular we carry out the full model analysis to show that our method can… More >

    P. Yu1, T. S. Lee1, Y. Zeng1, H. T. Low2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.1, No.3, pp. 235-246, 2005, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2005.001.235

Abstract A numerical model is developed for the investigation of flow field and mass transport in a micro-bioreactor, of working volume below 5 ml, in which medium mixing is generated by a magnetic stirrer-rod rotating on the bottom. The flow-field results show that a recirculation region exists above the stirrer rod and rotates with it; the related fluid mixing is characterized by a circulation coefficient of up to 0.2 which is about five times smaller than that of a one-litre stirred-tank bioreactor. The oxygen transfer coefficient is less than 5 h-1 which is two orders smaller than that of a 10-litre… More >
