    Po-Jen Su1, Cha’o-Kung Chen1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.91, No.2, pp. 135-151, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.091.135

Abstract The residual correction method is used to predict the temperature distribution of non-Fourier heat transfer with time-dependent boundary condition. The approximate solution of temperature field is obtained by the residual correction method based on the maximum principle in combination with the finite difference method, making it easier and faster to obtain upper and lower approximations of exact solutions, and even can provide clear definitions of the maximum error bounds of the approximate solutions. The proposed method is found to be an effective numerical method with satisfactory accuracy. More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.85, No.3, pp. 193-206, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.085.193

Abstract In this article, a new method combining the Mathematical Programming and the Method of Weighted Residual called MP-MWR is presented. Under the validation of maximum principle, and up on the collocation method, the differential equation can be transferred into a bilateral inequality problem. Applying the genetic algorithms helps to find optimal solutions of upper and lower bounds which satisfy the inequalities. Here, the method is verified by analyzing the deflection of superelliptical clamped plate problem. By using this method, the good approximate solution and its error bounds can be obtained effectively and accurately. More >

    Abstract In this continuation of a series of our earlier papers, we define a hyper-surface h(x,t) = 0 in terms of the unknown vector x, and a monotonically increasing function Q(t) of a time-like variable t, to solve a system of nonlinear algebraic equations F(x) = 0. If R is a vector related to ∂h / ∂x, , we consider the evolution equation x· = λ[αR + βP], where P = F − R(F·R) / ||R||2 such that P·R = 0; or x· = λ[αF + βP], where P = R − F(F·R) / ||F||2 such that P*·F =… More >

Simple "Residual-Norm" Based Algorithms, for the Solution of a Large System of Non-Linear Algebraic Equations, which Converge Faster than the Newton’s Method

    Chein-Shan Liu1, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.71, No.3, pp. 279-304, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.071.279

Abstract For solving a system of nonlinear algebraic equations (NAEs) of the type: F(x)=0, or Fi(xj) = 0, i,j = 1,...,n, a Newton-like algorithm has several drawbacks such as local convergence, being sensitive to the initial guess of solution, and the time-penalty involved in finding the inversion of the Jacobian matrix ∂Fi/∂xj. Based-on an invariant manifold defined in the space of (x,t) in terms of the residual-norm of the vector F(x), we can derive a gradient-flow system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the evolution of x with a fictitious time-like variable t as an independent variable. We can prove… More >

    Masato Saitoh1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.67, No.3, pp. 211-238, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.067.211

Abstract This paper describes the transformation of impedance functions in general structural systems with non-classical damping into a one-dimensional spring-dashpot system (1DSD). A transformation procedure based on complex modal analysis is proposed, where the impedance function is transformed into a 1DSD comprising units arranged in series. Each unit is a parallel system composed of a spring, a dashpot, and a unit having a spring and a dashpot arranged in series. Three application examples are presented to verify the applicability of the proposed procedure and the accuracy of the 1DSDs. The results indicate that the 1DSDs accurately simulate the impedance functions for… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.65, No.1, pp. 95-106, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.065.095

Abstract Up to now, solving some nonlinear differential equations is still a challenge to many scholars, by either numerical or theoretical methods. In this paper, the method of the maximum principle applied on differential equations incorporating the Residual Correction Method is brought up and utilized to obtain the upper and lower approximate solutions of nonlinear heat transfer problem of the non-Fourier fin. Under the fundamental of the maximum principle, the monotonic residual relations of the partial differential governing equation are established first. Then, the finite difference method is applied to discretize the equation, converting the differential equation into the mathematical programming… More >

    Baskaran Bhuvaraghan1, Sivakumar M Srinivasan2, Bob Maffeo3, Om Prakash4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.57, No.2, pp. 137-158, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.057.137

Abstract Shot peening is a complex and random process which is controlled by many input parameters. Numerical methods, which are normally used for impact problems will prohibitively put strain on the computing resources since a large number of impacts are involved in the computations. In this paper, a simplified analytical approach is used to predict the residual compressive stress that includes strain-rate effects. This is based on the method proposed by with a simple modification to include the strain rate effects. The residual stresses are predicted in materials SAE1070 and Inco718. In the computations, the random variation of the input parameters… More >

    M. Kashtalyan1,2, Y.A. Zhuk3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.57, No.1, pp. 1-30, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.057.001

Abstract The paper investigates propagation of stationary plane longitudinal and transverse waves along the layers in adhesively bonded multilayered structures for MEMS applications in the presence of residual stresses. The multilayered structure is assumed to consist of the infinite amount of the periodically recurring layers made of two different materials possessing significantly dissimilar properties: conductive metal layer and insulating adhesive layer. It is assumed that the mechanical behaviour of both materials is nonlinear elastic and can be described with the help of the elastic Murnaghan potential depending on the three invariants of strain tensor. The problem is formulated in the framework… More >

Abstract This paper seeks to utilize the residual correction method in coordination with the evolutionary monotonic iteration technique to obtain upper and lower approximate solutions of non-linear heat transfer problem of the annular hyperbolic profile fins whose thermal conductivity vary with temperature. First, the monotonicity of a non-linear differential equation is reinforced by using the monotone iterative technique. Then, the cubic spline method is applied to discretize and convert the differential equation into the mathematical programming problems. Finally, based on the residual correction concept, the complicated constraint inequality equations can be transferred into the simple iterative equations. As verified by this… More >

    Adan Vega1, Sherif Rashed2, Yoshihiko Tango3, Morinobu Ishiyama3, Hidekazu Murakawa2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.28, No.1, pp. 1-14, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.028.001

Abstract Experimental observations have shown that the inherent deformation produced by multi-heating lines is not a simple addition of the inherent deformation produced by single heating lines. Therefore, to accurately predict inherent deformation, the method of superposing inherent deformation of single heating lines is not appropriate. To overcome this difficulty, the authors investigate the influence of multi-heating lines on line heating inherent deformation. First, the influence of previous heating lines on inherent deformation of overlapping, parallel and crossing heating lines is clarified. The influence of the proximity to plate side edge on inherent deformation is also taken into account in the… More >
