The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.16, No.4, pp. 107-108, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.016.107

Abstract Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) as an advanced non-damaged measurement technique was introduced into the research of gas adsorption and desorption in coal to simulate physically and evaluate influence of tridimensional load and unload . Coal is typical heterogeneous material which can adsorb gas. Load and unload condition play important roles for gas storage and transport in coal. Gas in coal has two states, free and absorbed which act balance dynamically. The home-made triaxial osmoscope made up of non-magnetic polycarbonate material which has coal sample were placed into the magnetic bore of NMR spectrum equipment. The NMR spectrum experiments of coal… More >

Applications of Two-dimensional Parameter-induced Stochastic Resonance in Nonlinear Image Processing

    Bohou Xu1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 97-98, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.097

Abstract Stochastic resonance is a mechanical concept and may be used to image processing. This paper aims to develop an elementary theory of two-dimensional parameter-induced stochastic resonance (PSR) in order to contribute a new approach to nonlinear image processing. For tackling applications of stochastic resonance (SR) in image processing where adding noise may not be an easy task, we propose to generalize the concept of parameter-induced stochastic resonance from the one-dimensional case to the two-dimensional case. Specially, a novel two-dimensional system which demonstrates the feature of parameter-induced stochastic resonance is proposed for nonlinear image processing. An interesting feature of this paper… More >

Abstract Cardiovascular diseases are closely linked to atherosclerotic plaque development and rupture. Assessment of plaque vulnerability is of fundamental significance to cardiovascular research and disease diagnosis, prevention, treatment and management. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) data of carotid atherosclerotic plaques from 8 patients (5 male, 3 female; age: 62-83, mean=71) were acquired at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle by the Vascular Imaging Laboratory (VIL) with written informed consent obtained. Patient-specific vessel material properties were quantified using Cine MRI data for modeling use. 3D thin-layer models were used to obtain plaque stress and strain for plaque assessment. A stress-based plaque vulnerability index… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.59, No.3, pp. 713-727, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2019.05617

Abstract Brain tumor is one of the most dangerous disease that causes due to uncontrollable and abnormal cell partition. In this paper, we have used MRI brain scan in comparison with CT brain scan as it is less harmful to detect brain tumor. We considered watershed segmentation technique for brain tumor detection. The proposed methodology is divided as follows: pre-processing, computing foreground applying watershed, extract and supply features to machine learning algorithms. Consequently, this study is tested on big data set of images and we achieved acceptable accuracy from K-NN classification algorithm in detection of brain tumor. More >

Application of the Time-Domain Boundary Element Method to Analysis of Flow-Acoustic Interaction in a Hole-tone Feedback System with a Tailpipe

    Mikael A. Langthjem1, Masami Nakano2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.96, No.4, pp. 227-241, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.096.227

Abstract This paper is concerned with a mathematical model of a simple axisymmetric silencer-like model, consisting of a hole-tone feedback system equipped with a tailpipe. The unstable shear layer is modeled via a discrete vortex method, based on axisymmetric vortex rings. The aeroacoustic model is based on the Powell- Howe theory of vortex sound. Boundary integrals are discretized via the boundary element method; but the tailpipe is represented by the exact (one-dimensional) solution. It is demonstrated though numerical examples that this numerical model can display lock-in of the self-sustained flow oscillations to the resonant acoustic oscillations. More >

On the Axisymmetric Time-harmonic Lamb’s Problem for a System Comprising a Half-space and a Covering Layer with Finite Initial Strains

    S.D. Akbarov1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.95, No.3, pp. 173-205, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.095.173

Abstract By employing the Three-dimensional Linearized Theory of Elastic Waves in Initially Stressed Bodies (TLTEWISB) the time-harmonic Lamb’s problem for a system comprising a finite pre-strained half-space and finite pre-strained covering layer made of incompressible materials is examined for the case where the material of the covering layer is stiffer than that of the half-space material. It is assumed that on the upper free face plane of the covering layer the point-located time-harmonic force acts. The elasticity relations of the materials are described through Treloar’s potential. The corresponding boundary-value problem is solved by employing the Hankel integral transformation. The corresponding inverse… More >

    P.R. Venkatesh1, B.Chandrasekhar2 , M.M.Benal3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.52, No.1, pp. 83-104, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.052.083

Abstract In this work, node based basis functions are used to solve the acoustic scattering from plain thin bodies like plates, discs; and intersecting thin bodies like fins on a cylinder. Node based basis functions are defined on the vertices of triangles generated by triangular patch modeling, and these functions are used to define the unknown source distribution. Also the same functions are used as testing functions in the method of moment's solution. Three kinds of nodes were treated for defining the basis functions, namely, boundary node, non-boundary node and non boundary intersecting node. Also, three kinds of bodies were considered… More >

The Method of External Sources (MES) for Eigenvalue Problems with Helmholtz Equation

    S.Yu. Reutskiy1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 27-40, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.012.027

Abstract In this paper a new boundary method for eigenproblems with the Helmholtz equation in simply and multiply connected domains is presented. The solution of an eigenvalue problem is reduced to a sequence of inhomogeneous problems with the differential operator studied. The method shows a high precision in simply and multiply connected domains and does not generate spurious eigenvalues. The results of the numerical experiments justifying the method are presented. A New Approach to Degraded Image Processing Based on Two-Dimensional Parameter-Induced Stochastic Resonance

    Bohou Xu1, Yibing Yang1, Zhong-Ping Jiang2, Daniel W. Repperger3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.57, No.2, pp. 159-174, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.057.159

Abstract A modified two-dimensional parameter-induced stochastic resonance (2D-PSR) system is proposed. Both theoretical and simulation results indicate that the 2D-PSR system performs a resonant-like behavior when system parameters are properly adjusted. When applied to degraded image processing, 2D-PSR technique is proved to be able to attain higher SNR gain than traditional linear filters. Due to its strong robustness to environmental changes, adaptability, and complementarities with other methods, the proposed 2D-PSR technique turns out to be promising in the field of image processing. CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.33, No.3, pp. 243-268, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.033.243

Abstract In this work, a novel numerical technique, based on method of moments solution, is presented to solve the Combined layer formulation (CLF) to insure unique solution to the exterior acoustic scattering problem at all frequencies. A new set of basis functions, namely, Node based basis functions are used to represent the source distribution on the surface of rigid body and the same functions are used as testing functions as well. Combined layer formulation (CLF) is defined by linearly combining the Single layer formulation (SLF) and Double layer formulation (DLF) with complex coupling parameter. The matrix equations for the SLF and… More >
