Abstract Recent economic growth and development have considerably raised energy consumption over the globe. Electric load prediction approaches become essential for effective planning, decision-making, and contract evaluation of the power systems. In order to achieve effective forecasting outcomes with minimum computation time, this study develops an improved whale optimization with deep learning enabled load prediction (IWO-DLELP) scheme for energy storage systems (ESS) in smart grid platform. The major intention of the IWO-DLELP technique is to effectually forecast the electric load in SG environment for designing proficient ESS. The proposed IWO-DLELP model initially undergoes pre-processing in two stages namely min-max normalization and… More >

    Fuyin Ni1,2, Kai Li2,*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.5, pp. 1203-1221, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.025796

Abstract Unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) with energy storage is commonly based on conventional capacity configuration strategy with power angle control. It has problems such as phase jumping before and after compensation. DC-link cannot continuously emit active power externally. Therefore, this paper presents the compensation strategy of full load voltage magnitude and phase in capacity configuration of UPQC. The topology of UPQC is integrated a series active power filter (SAPF), a shunt active power filter (PAPF) and a photovoltaic-battery energy storage system (PV-BESS). The principle of full load voltage compensation is analyzed based on the PV-BESS-UPQC topology. The magnitude constant of… More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract The exponential growth of data necessitates an effective data storage scheme, which helps to effectively manage the large quantity of data. To accomplish this, Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) digital data storage process can be employed, which encodes and decodes binary data to and from synthesized strands of DNA. Vector quantization (VQ) is a commonly employed scheme for image compression and the optimal codebook generation is an effective process to reach maximum compression efficiency. This article introduces a new DNA Computing with Water Strider Algorithm based Vector Quantization (DNAC-WSAVQ) technique for Data Storage Systems. The proposed DNAC-WSAVQ technique enables encoding data using… More >

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.2, pp. 541-559, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.022610

Abstract Building structures themselves are one of the key areas of urban energy consumption, therefore, are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. With this understood, the carbon trading market is gradually expanding to the building sector to control greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, to balance the interests of the environment and the building users, this paper proposes an optimal operation scheme for the photovoltaic, energy storage system, and flexible building power system (PEFB), considering the combined benefit of building. Based on the model of conventional photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS), the mathematical optimization model of the system is proposed… More >

Abstract The integration of wind turbines (WTs) in variable speed drive systems belongs to the main factors causing low stability in electrical networks. Therefore, in order to avoid this issue, WTs hybridization with a storage system is a mandatory. This paper investigates WT system operating at variable speed. The system contains of a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) supported by a battery storage system (BSS). To enhance the quality of active and reactive power injected into the network, direct power control (DPC) scheme utilizing space-vector modulation (SVM) technique based on proportional-integral (PI) control is proposed. Meanwhile, to improve the rendition of… More >

Energy Management of Networked Smart Railway Stations Considering Regenerative Braking, Energy Storage System, and Photovoltaic Units

    Saeed Akbari1, Seyed Saeed Fazel1,*, Hamed Hashemi-Dezaki2,3

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.1, pp. 69-86, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.024121

Abstract The networking of microgrids has received significant attention in the form of a smart grid. In this paper, a set of smart railway stations, which is assumed as microgrids, is connected together. It has been tried to manage the energy exchanged between the networked microgrids to reduce received energy from the utility grid. Also, the operational costs of stations under various conditions decrease by applying the proposed method. The smart railway stations are studied in the presence of photovoltaic (PV) units, energy storage systems (ESSs), and regenerative braking strategies. Studying regenerative braking is one of the essential contributions. Moreover, the… More > Graphic Abstract

    Tinnawat Hongphan1, Matthew O. T. Cole1,*, Chakkapong Chamroon1, Ziv Brand2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.1, pp. 147-161, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.022821

Abstract This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study on controller design for the AMBs in a small-scale flywheel energy storage system, where the main goals are to achieve low energy consumption and improved rotordynamic stability. A H-infinity optimal control synthesis procedure is defined for the permanent-magnet-biased AMB-rotor system with 4 degrees of freedom. Through the choice of design weighting functions, notch filter characteristics are incorporated within the controller to reduce AMB current components caused by rotor vibration at the synchronous frequency and higher harmonics. Experimental tests are used to validate the controller design methodology and provide comparative results on performance… More >

Health Data Availability Protection: Delta-XOR-Relay Data Update in Erasure-Coded Cloud Storage Systems

    Yifei Xiao, Shijie Zhou*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.135, No.1, pp. 169-185, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.021795

Abstract To achieve the high availability of health data in erasure-coded cloud storage systems, the data update performance in erasure coding should be continuously optimized. However, the data update performance is often bottlenecked by the constrained cross-rack bandwidth. Various techniques have been proposed in the literature to improve network bandwidth efficiency, including delta transmission, relay, and batch update. These techniques were largely proposed individually previously, and in this work, we seek to use them jointly. To mitigate the cross-rack update traffic, we propose DXR-DU which builds on four valuable techniques: (i) delta transmission, (ii) XOR-based data update, (iii) relay, and (iv)… More >

Review on Capacity Optimization of Traction Transformer for High-Speed Railway

    Ruoqiong Li1,*, Linrun Xiao1, Jingtao Lu2, Xin Li2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.6, pp. 2533-2548, 2022, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.020803

Abstract In electrified railways, traction load not only fluctuates between peaks and valleys, but also has a situation of low utilization rate of average load throughout the day and short overload. The traction transformer selects the capacity with the peak load as the demand boundary, which will cause the capacity utilization rate to be low and even lead to the economic decline of the traction power supply system. This article summarizes the existing configuration methods for capacity optimization of traction transformer. Then under the conditions of energy storage and new energy access to traction power supply system, the three aspects are… More >

Optimal Intelligent Reconfiguration of Distribution Network in the Presence of Distributed Generation and Storage System

    Gang Lei1,*, Chunxiang Xu2

    Energy Engineering, Vol.119, No.5, pp. 2005-2029, 2022, DOI:10.32604/ee.2022.021154

Abstract In the present paper, the distribution feeder reconfiguration in the presence of distributed generation resources (DGR) and energy storage systems (ESS) is solved in the dynamic form. Since studies on the reconfiguration problem have ignored the grid security and reliability, the non-distributed energy index along with the energy loss and voltage stability indices has been assumed as the objective functions of the given problem. To achieve the mentioned benefits, there are several practical plans in the distribution network. One of these applications is the network rearrangement plan, which is the simplest and least expensive way to add equipment to the… More >
