Modeling and Simulation of Dynamic Unloading of Prestressed Rockmass

    Liang Wu1, Xiaorui Xiang1, Yang Chen1, Karrech Ali2,*, Junru Zhou1,*, Ming Chen3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.120, No.2, pp. 421-443, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.05218

Abstract During the excavation of deep rock, a sudden change in boundary conditions will cause the in-situ stress on the excavation surface to release instantaneously. This disturbance propagates in the form of an unloading stress wave, which will enlarge the damage field of surrounding rock. In this paper, the dynamic unloading problem of the in-situ stress in deep rock excavation is studied using theoretical, numerical, and experimental methods. First, the dynamic unloading process of rock is analyzed through adopting the wave equation, and the equivalent viscous damping coefficient of the material is taken into consideration. Calculations show that there is significant… More >

An Explicit Numerical Modeling of Soft Body Impact Damage in Metallic Airplane Structures

    I. Smojver1, D. Ivancevic1, D. Mihaljevic2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.70, No.2, pp. 191-216, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.070.191

Abstract This paper tackles the problem of numerical prediction of bird strike induced damage in real aeronautical structures using highly detailed finite element models and modern numerical approaches. Due to the complexity of today's aeronautical structures, numerical damage prediction methods have to be able to take into account various failure and degradation models of different materials. The work presented in this paper is focused on damage modeling in metallic items of aeronautical structures.
Abaqus/Explicit has been employed to perform geometrical and material nonlinear transient dynamic analyses. The problem of soft body impacts has been tackled by applying a hybrid Eulerian Lagrangian… More >

Strength of Brittle Materials under High Strain Rates in DEM Simulations

Jorge Daniel Riera1, Letícia Fleck Fadel Miguel2, Ignacio Iturrioz3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.82, No.2, pp. 113-136, 2011, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2011.082.113

Abstract In the truss-like Discrete Element Method (DEM), masses are considered lumped at nodal points and interconnected by means of uni-dimensional elements with arbitrary constitutive relations. In previous studies of the tensile fracture behavior of concrete cubic samples, it was verified that numerical predictions of fracture of non-homogeneous materials using DEM models are feasible and yield results that are consistent with the experimental evidence so far available. Applications that demand the use of large elements, in which extensive cracking within the elements of the model may be expected, require the consideration of the increase with size of the fractured area, in… More >

Engineering Model to Predict Behaviors of Shape Memory Alloy Wire for Vibration Applications

    M.K. Kang1, E.H. Kim1, M.S. Rim1, I. Lee1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.64, No.3, pp. 227-250, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.064.227

Abstract An engineering model for predicting the behavior of shape memory alloy (SMA) wire is presented in this study. Piecewise linear relations between stress and strain at a given temperature are assumed and the mixture rule of Reuss bounds is applied to get the elastic modulus of the SMAs in the mixed phase. Critical stresses and strains of the start and finish of the phase transformation are calculated at a given temperature by means of a linear constitutive equation and a stress-temperature diagram. Transformation conditions based on the critical stresses are translated in terms of critical strains. Martensite volume fraction and… More >

Lateral Plastic Collapse of Cylinders: Experiments and Modeling

    K. Nesnas1, A. Abdul-Latif2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.2, No.3, pp. 373-388, 2001, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2001.002.373

Abstract Large plastic collapse of an identical pair of cylinders of various geometries having the same length and volume is studied under lateral compressive load. Superplastic material is employed as a representative material to simulate the classical engineering material behavior under high strain rate. The effects of the strain rate and the geometry of cylinders on the plastic collapse are taken into account. The experimental study is conducted using a structure in which one cylinder is superplastic and the other is steel (referred to as deformable and non-deformable situation "DND''). The actual structure (DND) and that one investigated experimentally by Abdul-Latif… More >

Effect of the Strain Rate and Microstructure on Damage Growth in Aluminum

    R. R. Valisetty1, A.M. Dongare2, A.M. Rajendran3, R. R. Namburu1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.36, No.3, pp. 231-255, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.036.231

Abstract Materials used in soldier protective structures, such as armor, vehicles and civil infrastructures, are being improved for performance in extreme dynamic environments. Nanocrystalline metals show significant promise in the design of these structures with superior strengths attributed to the dislocation-based and grain-boundary-based processes as compared to their polycrystalline counterparts. An optimization of these materials, however, requires a fundamental understanding of damage evolution at the atomic level. Accordingly, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are performed using an embedded-atom method (EAM) potential on three nano-crystalline aluminum atom systems, one a Voronoi-based nano-crystalline system with an average grain size of 10 nm, and the… More >
